STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers provide football–specific statistical data and science-based info on everything from the playing fields to the athlete’s performance, to support STEM education in all 24 Buccaneers Academies. By linking football to STEM education and inquiry on the “Behind the Scenes Tours”, the Buccaneers give the students yet another innovative way to understand, explore and engage with the world of football.

Buccaneer Player Visits

Buccaneers Academy students get the thrill of meeting and interacting firsthand with Buccaneers players during their Bucs for a Better Bay school visits to each of the schools. Players talk to the students about the importance of focusing on excellence in their schoolwork, committing to a goal and living a healthy and active lifestyle. Each school visit also includes a chance to get active with the Players in fun and engaging drills under the red Buccaneers Academy shade cover in the schoolyard.

Reading Challenge

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers encourage all students in the 24 Buccaneers Academies to become better and more active readers through the annual “Buccaneers Academy Reading Challenge” which begins in September and continues throughout October. A true “Back to School” program, the Buccaneers Academy Reading Challenge motivates every classroom to compete and inspires every student to participate by reading even more than usual. At each of the 24 Buccaneers Academies, the classroom that logs the most number of minutes of reading, wins a “Behind-the-Scenes-Tour” of One Buc Place, the Buccaneers Training facility. Since the Buccaneers Academy Reading Challenge started, over 11,492,192 minutes of reading time have been recorded, with 5,260,380 minutes in the 2015-2016 school year alone.

Cheer Chat

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders bring their own special brand of inspiration to each Buccaneers Academy as they promote establishing healthy relationships and give insight into their own career paths through the Bucs exclusive “Cheer Chat” programming. Throughout the school year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cheerleaders will conduct two 30 – minute sessions at each Buccaneers Academy. During each session students learn about important life skills, such as good decision making, team work, perseverance and self-esteem, and are encouraged to develop their very own plans to build and maintain healthy, meaningful relationships.

Play60 Challenge

The Play60 Challenge is an NFL League-wide four-week program in partnership with the American Heart Association, which inspires students to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day in school and at home. At the 24 Buccaneers Academies, we further enable students to get out and play since the Bucs have donated an expansive red Buccaneers-themed play court shade cover to each school. In January 2016, Buccaneers Academy students played a total of 6,831,335 minutes, and the school that won received a special visit from Buccaneers players, Cheerleaders and Captain Fear to celebrate this great feat and the top 3 schools received a total of $5,000 in equipment from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their efforts! In total, Buccaneers Academy students have played 10,282,685,778 minutes since the program launched in 2013.

Fuel Up to Play60

Fuel Up to Play60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by the Dairy Council of Florida and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL), in collaboration with the USDA, to help encourage today’s youth to lead healthier lives by including dairy products into their diets.

Behind-the-Scenes Tour

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers offer “Behind-the-Scenes” tours of One Buccaneer Place, their Official Practice Facility, to every 4th grade student at the 24 Buccaneer Academies. During the guided tour of the exciting facility, students learn the History of the Buccaneers, gain inside information on careers in pro-sports, visit the Team, Locker Room, Team Dining Hall and the Team’s Practice Fields. Since its inception, the Buccaneers have given “Behind-the-Scenes” access to over 10,000+ students and teachers.

Buccaneers Academy Collateral

Since 2013, each year Buccaneers Academy students and teachers receive collateral to enhance the classroom learning skills. During the 2016-17 school year, each Buccaneers Academy will receive a poster featuring Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston, a journal to prepare game plans (in order to reach their GOALS), a Play60 poster and tracker (scoreboard) for the January Play60 Challenge.

Learning Garden

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, along with UnitedHealthcare volunteers, teachers and students, help install “Learning Gardens” at all 24 Buccaneers Academies to promote healthy eating habits and a love of science and nature. The “Learning Gardens serve as produce gardens, providing students with the opportunity to plant and nurture a garden, while learning about the importance of adding vegetables to their diet. The students get to watch the vegetables grow, nurture them and then harvest them. The Learning Gardens serve as a backdrop for learning throughout the elementary school curriculum, from science, to health, to math.

Holiday Card Art Contest

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers encourage all kinds of learning and creativity among the students in the Buccaneers Academies and the Bucs Holiday Card Art Contest is one way of doing that. During the month of October, students will work with their Art teachers and submit their ideas for an annual holiday card and the chance to see their artwork on this year’s Buccaneers holiday card. The winning student and his/her teacher will receive a “Behind-the-Scenes” tour of One Buc Place.

Great American Teach-In

Buccaneers Academy programing is designed to improve success of youth throughout the Bay area. As part of the Academy programing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers participate in the Great American Teach-In. Each year, since 2010, Buccaneers employees visit 24 Buccaneers Academies in Hillsborough County to share information with students about their unique careers with a professional football team, such as coaching, cheering, graphic design, event planning, and media relations. The Great American Teach-In is part of American Education Week, and is an initiative intended to give parents, community leaders, and the general public a better understanding and appreciation of the jobs of teachers and school employees.

"Welcome Back to School" video from the Bucs

Jameis Winston, QB for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, greets each Buccaneers Academy student with a “Welcome Back to School” video, where he stresses the importance on commitment, education, and respect for teachers and staff.

"Tackle the Tests: Test Taking Tips" video

Taking tests can be stressful for students, but with the help of Jameis Winston, each Buccaneers Academy will receive test-taking tips on how to properly prepare for upcoming exams. In this fun-yet-informative video, Jameis gives insight on how he and his teammates prepare mentally for their own upcoming tests and challenges.
