2017 Player Recap: Cameron Brate

Posted Jan 9, 2018

Tight end Cameron Brate continued to be one of the top producers at the tight end position during the 2017 season.

Throughout the 2016 season, the connection between quarterback Jameis Winston and tight end Cameron Brate was evident. The pair can regularly be seen during the season running extra drills after practice in order to get their timing just right. Those extra drills paid off in 2017 as well, with Brate again being one of the most productive tight ends in the league.

Among tight ends with a minimum of 45 receptions this season, Brate ranks in the top 10 across the league in touchdown receptions (6) and receiving yards (591). He ranks in the top five in yards per reception (12.31) among the same pool of players.

Brate’s most yards in a single game this season came against the New York Giants in Week 4. The fourth-year player had just four receptions during the game, but managed 80 yards and a touchdown. The game came in the middle of a streak where Brate caught a touchdown in four consecutive games.

During the Bucs’ Week 6 game against the Arizona Cardinals, with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in for the injured Jameis Winston, Brate and Fitzpatrick recorded the first ever Harvard-to-Harvard NFL touchdown in league history. Both players call the Ivy League institution their alma mater and later sent the game ball to their former coach.

Brate had one multi-touchdown game this season in Green Bay as the Bucs visited the Packers. The two passes the tight end caught both went for touchdowns, including the score that gave the Bucs the lead halfway through the fourth quarter. He also accounted for the Bucs first touchdown of the day on the opening drive. Winston hit Brate for a beautiful 28-yard pass down the middle to help the Bucs to a fast start.

Brate finished the season with 591 yards on 48 receptions for a 12.31 yard-per-catch average. He was targeted 77 times for a catch percentage of 62. He scored six touchdowns on the year, accounting for a total of 36 points.
