5 Takeaways from Mini-Camp, June 14

Posted Jun 14, 2017

A few notes from Wednesday's mini-camp practice at One Buccaneer Place.

1. Cam Brate was dominant in the red zone.
Despite the Buccaneers drafting a tight end in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft, the team still has big plans for Brate. He has worked as the Bucs’ No. 1 tight end in mini-camp and put together a strong performance on Wednesday, particularly in the red zone. He caught at least three touchdowns during the red zone drill and stayed after practice to get some extra work with Jameis Winston and O.J. Howard.

2. Chris Godwin is drawing lofty comparisons.
Head Coach Dirk Koetter had to stop himself before he said it, warning that it was early to be making such lofty comparisons. But Koetter, who has been impressed by Godwin all offseason, said that his third-round pick reminds him of a little of Roddy White, whom Koetter coached while he was the offensive coordinator for the Falcons. Godwin is still in the running for the kick returner job and took a handful of reps with Winston and the Bucs’ starters on Wednesday, though most of the team’s receivers cycled in with the ones at one point or another.

3. There is a revolving door for the No. 3 corner spot.
On Tuesday, Javien Elliott took the majority of the reps as the Bucs’ No. 3 cornerback. With Jude Adjei-Barimah sidelined, it appeared Elliott could have the inside track to be the team’s nickel corner. During Wednesday’s practice, Robert McClain filled the spot, hinting that the Buccaneers are open to experimenting with different players.

4. Lavonte David might want to return punts?
For the second day in a row, David was back fielding punts with several of the Buccaneers’ return men. It’s unlikely the Buccaneers will ever ask their standout linebacker to return a punt. Frankly, it’s unlikely there is a situation where the team would even allow him to. He’s ready for his number to be called, though.

5. Vernon Hargreaves continues to impress.
Hargreaves has had no problem creating splash plays this offseason. In the few practices open to the media, it seemed like Hargreaves finished most days with an interception. Koetter said that Hargreaves has been standing out all spring and is excited for the former first-round pick’s sophomore season. Hargreaves himself said that the game has been slowing down for him and that competing against DeSean Jackson has been helping him continue to develop.
