Bucs Claim S McCray from Dolphins

Posted Oct 2, 2013

Tampa Bay filled the one remaining opening on its 53-man roster and added depth to the safety position by claiming second-year player Kelcie McCray off waivers from Miami on Wednesday

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers began the Wednesday of their bye week with two open spots on their 53-man roster but have now filled both openings, shoring up the depth at the back end of their secondary in the process.

After first re-signing wide receiver Tiquan Underwood in the morning, the team made a second addition after the league's waiver wire cleared at 4:00 p.m. ET in the afternoon.  At that point, the Buccaneers learned that they had successfully claimed second-year safety Kelcie McCray off waivers from the Miami Dolphins.

McCray was waived by Miami on Tuesday after appearing in each of the Dolphins first four games this season.  He spent his rookie season on injured reserve due to a broken foot after signing with Miami as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas State.

The addition of McCray pushes the Bucs' depth chart at safety back to four players after former reserve Ahmad Black was released on Tuesday.  McCray joins fellow second-year player Keith Tandy as the backups to starters Mark Barron and Dashon Goldson.

The 6-1, 200-pound McCray started every game for Arkansas State during his last three collegiate seasons.  He finished his four-year Red Wolves career with 220 tackles and 10 interceptions, including 70 stops and four picks as a senior in 2011.  McCray hails from Columbus, Georgia.
