CB Wright Activated

Posted Dec 29, 2012

On Saturday, the Buccaneers activated veteran CB Eric Wright from the reserve list, making it possible for him to play in the season finale Sunday in Atlanta if that is the eventual decision

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Greg Schiano said on Friday that he wasn’t yet sure if cornerback Eric Wright, just returned from a four-game commissioner’s suspension, would play in Sunday’s season finale in Atlanta.  On Saturday, the Buccaneers at least made the necessary roster move to make it possible for Wright to suit up against the Falcons.

The Buccaneers activated Wright from the reserve list on Saturday before taking the short flight to Atlanta.  Since that move means the veteran defensive back now counts against the team’s 53-man roster limit, the Buccaneers also waived first-year CB LeQuan Lewis.

Wright started each of the Buccaneers’ first 10 games at right cornerback before missing the previous Atlanta game due to an Achilles tendon injury.  Though he also missed portions of several other games with the same injury, Wright contributed 39 tackles, one interception and eight passes defensed during that span, returning his pick 60 yards for a touchdown against the New York Giants in Week Two.

Schiano had indicated on Friday that Wright would be with the team in Atlanta, so Saturday’s roster move was not unexpected.  As for whether Wright would be active for the game or not, Schiano said, “It’s really more just what do we think is the best thing to do at this point in the year for our team to win, that’s really it.”

Wright signed a five-year deal with the Buccaneers in March as an unrestricted free agent.  He previously played four seasons in Cleveland and one in Detroit.

Lewis first joined the Buccaneers’ practice squad in early October and then was promoted to the active roster a week later.  He appeared in five games, contributing five tackles, one interception and one pass defensed.
