Claiming Marrow Adds Depth to Corner

Posted Jul 27, 2012

The Buccaneers filled their remaining roster vacancy early Friday evening, claiming rookie CB Desmond Marrow off waivers from the Houston Texans

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made their third roster addition of the day early Friday evening, claiming rookie cornerback Desmond Marrow off waivers from the Houston Texans.

A round of roster moves on Thursday evening had left the Buccaneers with three open spots on their 90-man roster heading into the first day of training camp practices on Friday.  They filled two of those before their morning workout, signing wide receiver Landon Cox and cornerback Marquese Wheaton.  The successful claim of Marrow pushes Tampa Bay's camp roster back to the maximum of 90 players.

Marrow originally entered the NFL in May as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans out of the University of Toledo.  He played 41 games with 33 starts during his collegiate career, racking up 204 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions, 29 passes defensed and two forced fumbles.  Last year, Marrow led the Rockets in both tackles (83) and passes defensed (18) and tied for the team lead with three interceptions.

Adding Marrow and Wheaton creates some useful depth at the cornerback position as camp begins.  Before the additions, the Bucs had five players listed exclusively as cornerbacks on the 90-man roster – Aqib Talib, Eric Wright, E.J. Biggers, Myron Lewis and Leonard Johnson, plus three others who are designated as "DBs" and could fit at either corner or safety – Ronde Barber, Anthony Gaitor and Keith Tandy.  Biggers left the field near the end of Friday's practice with an apparent injury but Head Coach Greg Schiano did not have a status update on the fourth-year cornerback at his post-practice press briefing.
