FB Larsen Signed, S Saenz Waived Among Saturday Roster Moves

Posted Jul 27, 2013

Tampa Bay turned over several spots on their 90-man camp roster on Saturday, adding former Broncos FB Spencer Larsen along with G Jeff Olson, CB Mason Robinson, WR Bobby Sewall and waiving G Jeremy Lewis and S Nick Saenz

The 90-man roster that an NFL team takes to training camp is nothing if not fluid, and on Saturday the Tampa Bay Buccaneers turned over several spots on their own ledger.

Three days into camp, the Buccaneers brought in veteran fullback Spencer Larsen, who spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos before signing with the New England Patriots last year and subsequently landing on injured reserve.  Tampa Bay also added a rookie free agent to the ranks, inking cornerback Mason Robinson of Rutgers, and picked up a pair of first-year players in guard Jeff Olson and wide receiver Bobby Sewall.

To make room on the roster for the new additions, the Buccaneers waived rookie guard Jeremy Lewis and first-year safety Nick Saenz.  In addition, rookie wide receiver Jerry Johnson has been designated as exempt/left squad.  The Buccaneers started the day with 89 players on the roster and now have the maximum of 90 for training camp.

The 6-2, 245-pound Larsen originally entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft pick by the Broncos in 2008.  He made an interesting bit of history as a rookie, starting a game against the Atlanta Falcons at both fullback and middle linebacker.  That made Larsen the first Bronco ever to start on both sides of the ball and the first NFL player since Orlando Brown in 2003 to pull off that feat.

Larsen, who primarily played linebacker in college at Arizona, was a reserve at both spots in 2009 before concentrating on fullback for the next two years.  His career NFL totals include 17 carries for 62 yards and 14 receptions for another 127 yards, as well as 38 tackles on defense.

Robinson continues to fight the odds as he tries to catch on with the Buccaneers.  A dominant high-school running back in New Jersey, he went to Rutgers to play that position and served as a reserve his first two years, rushing 77 times for 341 yards.  Consecutive knee injuries robbed him of all but one game over the next two seasons, however, and before the 2012 campaign he was converted to cornerback.  Earlier this offseason, Robinson went to camp with the New York Jets on a tryout contract.

Olson, who played his college ball at TCU, has been to offseason mini-camps with the Buccaneers in 2012 and the Jets this spring.  Sewall originally came to the NFL from Brown in 2010, going to training camp with the Tennessee Titans, and has since been playing in the Arena League.
