Key Matchups: Buccaneers vs. Dolphins

Posted Nov 8, 2013

Among the specific battles to keep an eye on Monday night when the Miami Dolphins visit Raymond James Stadium will be CB Darrelle Revis' efforts to limit big-play WR Mike Wallace

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-8) will take on the Miami Dolphins (4-4) on Monday night at Raymond James Stadium. Here are several matchups between individual players and/or certain team units that could go a long way towards determining the game's final outcome:

Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis vs. Dolphins WR Mike Wallace
These first-year Florida transplants should see a lot of each other after Revis’s man-to-man duties increased against Golden Tate in Seattle. Tate’s day ended with three catches for 29 yards. Wallace is a consistent deep-ball threat who ranked third in the NFL with 50 receptions of 25+ yards over the last four seasons, making this a marquee matchup for prime-time television.

Tampa Bay's Offensive Line vs. Miami's Front Four
Miami’s front four combined for five sacks, one forced fumble and a game-winning overtime safety last week against the Bengals. The Bucs line has allowed just 20 sacks, and is coming off its best run-blocking game of the season. Tampa Bay must limit playmaker Cameron Wake while remaining attentive across the board to keep QB Mike Glennon upright.

Buccaneers RB Mike James vs. the Dolphins' Rush Defense
James looks to build on a breakout 158-yard rushing performance in which he shouldered the load with 28 carries, four more than his last two games combined. If he can maintain his 5.6 yards-per-carry pace against a Dolphins’ defense allowing 116.5 rushing yards per game (ypg), he could have a big game under the lights.

Buccaneers LB Lavonte David and S Mark Barron vs., Well, Everybody
David has five sacks this season, has recorded three straight games with double-digit tackles and ranks eighth in the NFL in stops. Barron had a big day in Seattle with 11 tackles and an interception. Together, they account for 27.5% of the Bucs’ total tackles in 2013. The pair of second-year stars has shown speed and ball-hawking skills and should play a vital role in hindering the Dolphins’ air and ground games.

Tampa Bay WR Vincent Jackson vs. Miami's Secondary
Jackson averages nearly 15 yards per catch and 80 ypg so far. And since Week 4, Glennon’s first start, only one NFL player has been targeted more times than Jackson. Miami’s defense ranks 23rd in receiving ypg allowed this season, but they have surrendered just one touchdown to a WR this year, the fewest in the league.

Tampa Bay's Pass Defense vs. QB Ryan Tannehill
Tannehill has four multi-turnover games this year but was effective last week, completing 71.4% of his passes with no turnovers. The Bucs must return to early-season form and force Tannehill into mistakes. In their first four games, the Bucs allowed five passing scores with six interceptions. Since, they have allowed 10 passing TDs with two INTs.
