Pass-Catchers Shuffled in Bye Week Moves

Posted Oct 1, 2013

Chris Owusu has been promoted amid a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday that also including the waiver of S Ahmad Black and the release of WR Kevin Ogletree

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Chris Owusu, who spent most of last season on the active roster, has been promoted back to that group from the practice squad
  • WR Kevin Ogletree was released and S Ahmad Black waived amid a handful of roster moves on Tuesday
  • Nate Byham will be joining fellow tight end Luke Stocker on injured reserve but the Bucs could get Tom Crabtree back soon
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hope to look like a different team when they come out of their bye week.  The roster, at least, will have a somewhat different look, particularly among the pass-catchers.

Chris Owusu is rejoining the team's receiving corps in a promotion from the practice squad but tight end Nate Byham is being moved to the injured reserve list, ending his season.  Wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, signed as an unrestricted free agent in March, was released on Tuesday; that move, along with the waiver of safety Ahmad Black, cleared two spots on the 53-man roster, neither of which has to be filled immediately with the team on its bye week.  The Bucs also have two open spots on the eight-man practice squad after the promotion of Owusu and Tuesday's release of WR Dan Buckner.

The Buccaneers' wide receiver depth behind starters Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams now consists of Owusu, Eric Page and Russell Shepard, with another possible addition coming this week.

Owusu (6-2, 200) was part of the Buccaneers' receiving corps at the end of 2012.  A rookie last year who was signed off San Diego's practice squad in mid-September, he was a game-day inactive for much of the season but did see action in five games, recording one 24-yard reception.  This summer, Owusu played in the preseason opener and had two catches for 48 yards but missed the remainder of the August slate with a minor injury.

Owusu first signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford before ending up on San Diego's practice squad.  At Stanford, he caught 102 passes for 1,534 yards and 10 touchdowns and was also a weapon as a kickoff returner, scoring three times and averaging 27.3 yards per attempt, the second-highest mark in school history.

Black was a fifth-round pick by the Buccaneers in 2011.  He began his rookie season on the practice squad but earned a September promotion and subsequently played in four games in 2011 and all 16 last year, with one start.  The former Florida Gator also played in the first four games of 2013, starting two when the team opened in extra-DB packages against New Orleans and New England.  He had 11 tackles and one stop on special teams before his release.

Ogletree joined the Buccaneers in March after four seasons in Dallas.  He played in the first four games of the season, with one start in a three-receiver package, and contributed eight catches for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Byham is the second Buccaneer tight end to land on injured reserve in the past two weeks, as a knee injury sustained against Arizona has ended his season.  He follows Luke Stocker (hip) to I.R., leaving the Bucs with only Tom Crabtree and rookie Tim Wright at the tight end position.  Crabtree has also missed the first four games of the season due to a high ankle sprain suffered during the preseason, but he is hopeful that he can return to action after the bye week.  Byham had inherited a starting role with Crabtree and Stocker sidelined, and had pitched in with three catches for 38 yards.
