Several Bucs Among NFL's All-Time Greats

Posted Jul 12, 2017

Where do Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Lee Roy Selmon and other legendary Buccaneers stand among the all-time greats?

With spring workouts completed and training camp looming right around the corner, this time of year can be a down time for NFL analysts and fans. That being said, it’s a perfect time to reflect on some historical figures across the league, which is exactly what NFL.com’s Gil Brand did earlier this week.

Brandt took on the monumental challenge of ranking the best players at every position in NFL history, and the Buccaneers are well-represented on his list.

Several iconic Bucs made the list, as expected. Hall of Famers Lee Roy Selmon (No. 6 at defensive end), Derrick Brooks (No. 6 at linebacker) and Warren Sapp (No. 14 at defensive tackle) were all selected among the best to ever play their respective positions. John Lynch (No. 17 at safety) and Ronde Barber (No. 22 at cornerback) were also mentioned. Tight end Jimmie Giles, fullback Mike Alstott and offensive tackle Paul Gruber are among the key omissions by Brandt.

Most would identify the aforementioned players as Buccaneers. Many played the majority of their career in Tampa Bay, if not their whole careers. Other former Bucs made Brandt’s list, but some were only with the team for a short period of time.

Other former players to make the list include Tim Brown (No. 13 at wide receiver), Randall McDaniel (No. 8 at guard), Michael Bennett (No. 27 at denfensive end), Hugh Green (No. 20 at linebacker), Aquib Talib (No. 23 at cornerback), Darelle Revis (No. 16 at cornerback), Joey Browner (No. 22 at safety), Garo Yepremian (No. 18 at kicker), Eddie Murray (No. 16 at kicker) and John Carney (No. 12 at kicker).

The mention of Bennett is a reminder that current players are included on this list. The Buccaneers had one active player make the list: punter Bryan Anger, who was listed as the No. 6 player of all-time. For Brandt’s complete list, click HERE.
