Data Crunch: Martin's Production

Posted Oct 24, 2013

In the third of our weekly ventures into data visualization, we give you a graphical look at how RB Doug Martin has compiled his impressive statistics through the first 22 games of his NFL career

Every week, we football fans consume the NFL through live game action, replays and highlight shows. And then we consume it again through the numbers. Whether it's via fantasy football, statistical analysis or simply the league standings, numbers help us understand and digest the game we love.

This season, Buccaneers.com wants to help you see what the numbers are saying.

Welcome back to Data Crunch, our weekly foray into data visualization that will help tell the story of Tampa Bay Buccaneers football and the 2013 NFL season as a whole. Here, we will not only dive deep into the statistics generated each week by the Buccaneers but we'll present it to you in graphical form to better convey what the numbers are telling us. These interactive graphs allow the user to identify trends, gaining a better understanding of how wins and losses are generated and where the team is headed.

Our third data visualization exercise of 2013 rides a very timely concern for the Buccaneers: the need to replace Doug Martin's production for an as-yet-unforeseeable amount of time. Martin, the Buccaneers' leading rusher in 2013 and a Pro Bowl performer as a rookie in 2012, sustained a shoulder injury on Sunday in Atlanta that is almost sure to keep him out of action against Carolina on Thursday night. The Buccaneers will ask rookie running back Mike James to step into Martin's starting spot on Thursday, and James could find himself as the team's primary ballcarrier for weeks or months to follow.

Of course, no team would expect to get the exact same production from a reserve as the Pro Bowler he's replacing; coming anywhere close would be a success for James. Here, you can take a look at exactly the type of production the Bucs have gotten from Martin through his impressive first 22 games as a professional. Martin's runs, rushing yards, receptions and receiving yards are broken down by game and by down on which they were achieved. Near the end, you'll find Martin's graphics overlaid by those of James, who has only just began to take on a bigger role in the Bucs' offense.

(Note: Last week's Data Crunch regarding Vincent Jackson's peak performances has been updated to include Jackson's impressive performance in Atlanta on Sunday.)
