Adams to I.R. as CB Spot Takes Hit

Posted Nov 18, 2013

CB Michael Adams will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury sustained on Sunday against Atlanta and the Bucs will also be monitoring the state of CB Johnthan Banks' injured shoulder

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had two cornerbacks among their list of seven inactive players for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons.  They may need that depth as soon as next weekend.

The Buccaneers will definitely need at least one replacement in the secondary when they take on the Lions in Detroit on Sunday, as cornerback Michael Adams was placed on injured reserve on Monday.  Adams, who has played extensively in the Buccaneers' nickel and dime packages in his first year with the team, suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Bucs' 41-28 win over the Falcons.

Potentially complicating the situation at cornerback for the Buccaneers is the shoulder injury that rookie Johnthan Banks sustained on Sunday, one that Head Coach Greg Schiano described as "very painful."  Banks, a second-round draft pick out of Mississippi State in April, has started nine of 10 games at right cornerback for the Buccaneers this season.

"[Banks] will be day to day, but hopefully, by the end of the week, he’ll be able to go," said Schiano.

Adams joins two other cornerbacks on the Bucs' injured reserve list: rookie Rashaan Melvin and third-year player Anthony Gaitor.  If Banks is also unavailable against the Lions, the Buccaneers could turn to rookie Deveron Carr, an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State, and fourth-year player Danny Gorrer, who played for the Buccaneers last season and was having an outstanding camp before suffering a groin injury.  That injury put Gorrer on the injured reserve/designated for return list, and he returned to action in Week Nine at Seattle.  However, Gorrer has missed the last two games due to another groin injury.  There are also two cornerbacks currently toiling on the Buccaneers' practice squad: Marc Anthony, who has been on that crew the entire season, and Bobby Felder, a recent waiver claim from the Minnesota Vikings.

-- CB Michael Adams contributed 11 tackles, a sack and a pass defensed in 2013
Adams was signed by the Buccaneers in June after spending his first six NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.  He played in six games this season and contributed 11 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, one quarterback hit and one pass defensed.  Banks has 34 tackles, one interception and three passes defensed, and Gorrer tallied a single pass-breakup during his one game of action in Seattle.

In other injury news, Schiano said that linebacker Mason Foster is under observation after he sustained a concussion on Sunday, while DE Da'Quan Bowers, who missed Sunday's game with a concussion of his own, could return to practice on Wednesday.
