Bucs Add Edwards for Cornerback Depth

Posted Jul 30, 2014

With Alterraun Verner and Rashaan Melvin still temporarily sidelined, the Bucs have signed first-year CB Kip Edwards, filling the roster spot opened by the official release of Carl Nicks

  • With a couple corners nuring minor injuries, the Bucs have added two players to that position this week
  • Kip Edwards played with the Bills during the 2013 preseason and served on practice squads in Cleveland and Minnesota
  • The official release of Pro Bowl G Carl Nicks opened up a roster spot for Edwards
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought Anthony Gaitor back into the foldon Monday, in part because minor injuries to Alterraun Verner and Rashaan Melvin were threatening to overtax the remaining cornerbacks on the training camp depth chart.  On Wednesday, the Buccaneers doubled down with that strategy, adding another cornerback to the roster: first-year man Kip Edwards, most recently of the Minnesota Vikings.

The Bucs had a spot available on their 90-man camp roster because they made the Carl Nicks release official on Wednesday.  The team announced last Friday that it was mutually parting ways with Nicks, with the Pro Bowl guard choosing to step away from the game after two years of trying to return from a foot injury and a subsequent infection.

The 6-1, 200-pound Edwards first entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills in 2013.  He eventually spent time on two different practice squads during his rookie season, with the Cleveland Browns for most of September and then with the Minnesota Vikings in December.  The Vikings re-signed Edwards this past February but released him in June.

Edwards played his college ball at Missouri, appearing in 49 games with 23 starts over four seasons.  All 23 of his starts came during his final two seasons, and his senior campaign included 46 tackles, six tackles for loss and two interceptions.  He originally hails from Arlington, Texas.

CB Kip Edwards went to camp with Buffalo last season and spent time on two different practice squads in the fall

Verner (hamstring) and Melvin (ankle) are nursing minor injuries and are not expected to be out of practice much longer.
