Bucs Confirm Visit from CB Owens

Posted Mar 20, 2014

In addition to signing Mike Jenkins, the Buccaneers also met with another free agent cornerback on Thursday, as former Falcon, Brown and Dolphin Chris Owens visited One Buc Place

Head Coach Lovie Smith said his Tampa Bay Buccaneers weren't quite finished with free agency, and it's now apparent that the defensive backfield was one remaining point of interest.

On the same day that the team inked former Pro Bowl cornerback Mike Jenkins to a one-year deal, it also entertained another free agent at the same position in former Cleveland Brown Chris Owens.  Owens left One Buccaneer Place without a deal but the team could still be interested.  The contract with Jenkins, for instance, came two days after the Bucs confirmed his visit to team headquarters.

Owens (5-9, 180) is familiar with the NFC South, having played four seasons for the Falcons after Atlanta drafted him in the third round in 2009.  Last year, Owens played 12 games for the Cleveland Browns after signing as an unrestricted free agent in March.  He was waived in December and claimed by the Miami Dolphins, for whom he played one game before season's end.  In all, Owens has 72 games with 14 starts, recording 184 tackles, three interceptions, 3.5 sacks and 26 passes defensed.
