On Tuesday, the NFL revealed the five nominees for its latest Rookie of the Week award, and Gholston was on the list after his 1.5-sack performance in Sunday's 27-6 win over Buffalo. This is Gholston's first such nomination and the third for a Buccaneer this season; quarterback Mike Glennon was nominated following the team's Week 11 and Week 12 wins over Atlanta and Detroit, respectively.
The NFL Rookie of the Week for Week 14 will be determined by fan voting on NFL.com. Balloting began on Tuesday and will continue through Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET. Click here to visit the voting page, which includes video highlights of all the nominees. The winner will be announced on NFL Network's Total Access show on Friday afternoon, and on NFL.com.
Gholston was a top contributor to the Buccaneers' best defensive outing of the season, as they allowed just 214 yards and two field goals to the Bills while collecting four interceptions and a season-high seven sacks. Gholston paced that seven-sack attack, with seven different players recording at least a half-sack. The 2013 fourth-round pick out of Michigan State also contributed four tackles as Tampa Bay held Buffalo's fourth-ranked rushing attack to just 67 yards.
In addition to his tackles and sacks, Gholston pitched in with a tackle for loss, two quarterback hits and a pass defensed. Over the last month, Gholston has seen his playing time in the Bucs' defensive-line rotation steadily increase, culminating in his most impactful performance yet in Week 14.
After the regular season, five players will be nominated for Rookie of the Year honors. Fans will then be able to vote for the winner of that award on NFL.com throughout the month of January. The Rookie of the Year will be announced at the “3rd Annual NFL Honors” awards show in New York City on FOX on Saturday, Feb. 1, the night before Super Bowl XLVIII.
