All indications are that Nicks' current infection is not a new case of MRSA but rather a recurrence of the original infection, which was first diagnosed in August. Though he was deemed to be cleared of the infection in September and has since played in two games, the Buccaneers' medical staff continued to monitor Nicks' foot in the subsequent weeks, as a recurrence of such an infection is not uncommon.
Nicks complained of foot soreness on Wednesday. A culture was taken immediately to determine if an infection was involved, and results arrived on Thursday confirming the presence of MRSA.
