Nicks' MRSA Infection Confirmed

Posted Oct 10, 2013

Pro Bowl G Carl Nicks once again has a MRSA staph infection in his left foot, with all indications that it is a recurrence of the original infection first diagnosed in August

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed Thursday that guard Carl Nicks has a MRSA staph infection in his left foot, the same ailment that caused him to miss the first two games of the 2013 regular season.

All indications are that Nicks' current infection is not a new case of MRSA but rather a recurrence of the original infection, which was first diagnosed in August.  Though he was deemed to be cleared of the infection in September and has since played in two games, the Buccaneers' medical staff continued to monitor Nicks' foot in the subsequent weeks, as a recurrence of such an infection is not uncommon.

Nicks complained of foot soreness on Wednesday.  A culture was taken immediately to determine if an infection was involved, and results arrived on Thursday confirming the presence of MRSA.
