After rushing for 163 yards against Atlanta on Sunday, in his first extended NFL opportunity, Rainey has been nominated for the NFL's Ground Player of the Week award. The winner will be determined by voting on NFL.com, which lasts through Friday, November 22, at 3:00 p.m. ET. The Ground Player of the Week will then be revealed on NFL Total Access on NFL Network and on NFL.com on Friday.
In just his 10th NFL game, and his fourth as a Buccaneer since being claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Browns on October 21, Rainey ran 30 times for those 163 yards, averaging 5.4 yards per tote, and added two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. His rushing total was the third-highest by any running back in the NFL this season.
Rainey's 163 yards also rank ninth in Buccaneers history in a single game, and they made him the third different Tampa Bay running back to crack the 100-yard mark this season. That's the first time that has happened in franchise history. Rainey took over as the Bucs' primary ballcarrier for the injured
This is Rainey's first Ground Player of the Week nomination and the first such bid for any Buccaneer player in 2013. The last Tampa Bay player to win the award was Martin, who took it home in Weeks Eight, Nine and 11 last year. Running back LeGarrette Blount (Week 16 in 2010) is the only other Tampa Bay player to win the award.
