WR Dawson Promoted to Active Roster

Posted Oct 16, 2013

The Bucs filled an open spot on the 53-man roster by signing rookie WR Skye Dawson off their own practice squad, and also made several other changes to that practice squad

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The promotion of rookie WR Skye Dawson filled a spot on the 53-man roster opened by the move of CB Rashaan Melvin to IR
  • Dawson played for the Redskins during the preseason and was a top-notch return man at TCU
  • The Bucs also added T Emmett Cleary and S Nick Saenz to the practice squad
On Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers filled the open spot on their 53-man roster by promoting from within, bringing rookie wide receiver Skye Dawson up from the practice squad.  The Buccaneers had the available roster spot after placing rookie cornerback Rashaan Melvin on injured reserve on Tuesday.

Dawson's promotion was also part of a shakeup on the Buccaneers' eight-man practice squad.  Tackle Randy Richards was waived from that crew, meaning there were two spots to fill and they went to tackle Emmett Cleary and safety Nick Saenz.  Cleary is a rookie out of Boston College who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts while Saenz returns to the team with which he spent most of the 2013 offseason.

Dawson (5-9, 183) signed with Washington Redskins after the 2013 draft and made it through the preseason before being waived in the final roster cuts.  The Buccaneers picked him up the next day to complete the first iteration of their 2013 practice squad.  Dawson's last game action actually occurred at Raymond James Stadium, as he caught one pass for 11 yards for the Redskins against the Buccaneers in the 2013 preseason finale.

AT TCU, Dawson played in 49 games and made 13 starts, finishing with 91 receptions for 1,125 yards and six touchdowns.  His top season came during his 2011 junior campaign, when he hauled in 45 passes for 500 yards and five scores.  He was also the Horned Frogs' primary kickoff and punt return man as a senior, and he earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors in that role.  Dawson and current St. Louis Rams rookie Tavon Austin were the only two players in the conference to rank among the top five in both kickoff and punt return average.

The 6-7, 313-pound Cleary went to training camp with the Colts but was released with an injury settlement in the final cuts.  At Boston College, he played in 48 games and started the last 29, moving from right tackle to left tackle as a senior.  Though he grew up in the Chicago suburbs, Cleary was actually born in Tokyo.

Saenz (6-0, 195) first came to the Buccaneers late in his 2012 rookie season after entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills.  Saenz joined Tampa Bay's practice squad on December 26 and then, after the season, was re-signed on a futures contract for 2013.  He remained with the team through the beginning of training camp but was waived a few days into camp.
