Mikal Smith
Safeties Coach

Biography

6th NFL Season, 2nd with Buccaneers

Mikal Smith begins his second season as safeties coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015.

Despite not having any safety start all 16 games last season, Smith managed to get production from several players. Bradley McDougald started the final five games of the season, including at Carolina (12/14), where he recorded 15 tackles, tied for the most by any safety in the NFL last year and the most by a Buccaneers player since linebacker Lavonte David registered 16 at Oakland in 2012 (11/4/12). Dashon Goldson’s 80 tackles were the second-most on the team, while Keith Tandy notched one interception on the year.

Smith came to Tampa Bay from Dallas where served as the nickelbacks coach in 2013. Smith began his NFL career in Chicago for three seasons under Head Coach Lovie Smith.

Smith joined Chicago as a coaching assistant (2009) before becoming the defensive quality control coach (2010-11). After two seasons as the defensive quality control coach, Smith became the defensive assistant/nickelbacks coach (2012).

Before coaching in the NFL, Smith was assistant coach at Trinity International (Deerfield, Illinois) for two years. He started out as the defensive backs coach (2006), before adding special teams coordinator to his title the next season (2007).

Smith was a two-time starter at safety at Arizona (1995-96). Smith graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Carthage College (Kenosha, Wisconsin).

He and his wife Kristen reside in Tampa with their family.
