Buccaneers Training Camp Player Quotes: Monday, July 29, 2019

Cornerback Carlton Davis

(On if the offense is being challenged by Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles' scheme)

"Yeah, Bowles is a genius when it comes to schemes, so I feel like our offense [is] getting really good work when it comes to going up against a defensive coordinator like him every day in practice. Hopefully, it'll make them better going into the season."

(On Bowles' personality)

"He's really cool. Obviously, he's like a genius when it comes to defense, but he's a really cool guy. He allows us to be ourselves like I said earlier. I feel like he's a player's coach and he really cares about how we feel as far as the scheme and how we feel as far as his play calling. I feel like he'll lean more towards us when it comes to play calling and really calls plays how it fits our strengths. Having him as a coordinator is a player's dream because he's really a player's coach. He's dedicated to wanting to see us do [well] on the field."

(On where he is most improved from last year)

"Just experience – last year, I got a chance to play a lot, which was really good for me. Everything that I've seen really helped me out. Obviously, being a rookie in my first year in the NFL, [there] was a lot I haven't seen and a lot of things thrown at me early. So, just going through that, the growing pains – as I talked about earlier, really not only me – our whole defense, I feel like we got better going through everything that we went through last year."

(On what he thinks the ceiling is for this defense)

"I feel like we can be a really good defense this year. From the schemes to the personnel, I just feel like the ceiling is really high for us. It's all about taking it one day at a time, just growing every day and coming in every day to compete and get better."

Tight End O.J. Howard

(On the usage of the tight ends in the passing game)

"We've been used a lot. I would say during OTA's, we knew that coming into it. This position can be very helpful in this offense. [Bruce Arians] just finds ways to get us the ball. The first couple days of practice, I'm sure you guys have noticed it, we got a chance to make a lot of plays and I like it a lot."

(On ILB Devin White's comments that he doesn't play like a tight end)

"I'm one of the faster tight ends, so it's definitely an advantage for me. I try to do that every route when I get a chance to use my speed and try to be very decisive with that in running routes and things like that. The hard part when it comes to me is when I'm blocking the bigger boys on the line of scrimmage, so I've got to try to use my technique for that. I've definitely got the speed. It's definitely not really normal, but sometimes it helps a lot."

(On how much of Head Coach Bruce Arians' mentality has carried over to the team)

"A lot. Coach, his mentality – the way he wants us to be – I think that's rubbed off on everybody on the team. He's said that since day one since he's been here – the way he coaches [is] the way he coaches. We like it. He's just going to make our team better. You see we are going out there with confidence every day and a little swagger on both sides of the ball. That's the identity our team wants to build."

(On how he takes the time to get better at the various parts of his game)

"Reps – staying after practice, doing the little things. Like you said, it's so hard. That's what's hard – you try to become really good at a lot of stuff that sometimes you forget the little things. The biggest thing is you remember your details and your techniques, and then all of the rest of the stuff starts becoming natural, like the ability is going to take over. When you try to do so much, you kind of get overwhelmed, but just remember the little details."
