Buccaneers Training Camp Quotes: Saturday, July 27, 2019

Outside Linebacker Shaquil Barrett

(On his expectations of himself)

"I always, no matter what [or] who was in front of me, whenever I get on the field, I'm ready to play. I'm always ready to make an impact on the game and try to make an impact on the game. I know in our room, our outside linebacker group we [are] taking the challenge we [are] ready to show the people that believed in us that they believed in us for the right reason and to prove the doubters wrong. So, we're just ready to make our impact on the team."

(On being a veteran)

"Yeah, that's a different role for me for sure. I always was like – ever since my third year, I've always been helping out the younger guys. I always have been like a vet, but now actually being the – I think the oldest guy in the room right now, is different. I'm ready for it though, I've learned under a lot of great players and been around a lot of great players. So, I'm ready to just try to help out as much as I can. And I've already been helping out, and all the guys in our room help out whenever they can and just give advice whenever they notice anything. We are all stepping up and doing our part to have a good room and all of us just being leaders."

(On DL Vita Vea and DL Ndamukong Suh opening up lanes)

"I think the inside linebackers are really going to appreciate that. They've got two great guys up there – stout guys who are going to be really good in the running [game] and they'll affect the pass game too. So, we're real good up front."

(On thoughts about OLB Noah Spence)

"He's so explosive off the ball. His get-off is amazing, and then he's real good with his hands as well. And [he's] got great body control. So, he's going to be very good for us this year."

Safety Mike Edwards

(On how he managed pain following his injury)

(On getting a sense for all the different ways that the coaching staff will utilize him)

"They say they are going to do a lot with me. Right now, they've got me at free safety. I was playing small safety earlier in the year when I first got here and then they moved me to free [safety]. So, we'll see how it plays out. I'm just ready to play wherever they put me at."

(On what he's learned about being a professional in the NFL so far)

"You've just got to have patience and just grind. In college it's like school, tutors, and practice and doing whatever. And now, it's just straight football. [We have] way more meetings. [We have] more meeting time than anything – we meet about meetings. So, it's just crazy, and I've got to definitely look forward to the meetings and be on top of that. [I've] always got my playbook, and there's a lot more calls that are going in, so you've got to be on top of all that."

(On his goals for this season)

"[My goal is] just to make my team better. I mean, [I] really [don't have any] personal goals. My main goal is to win the championship. So, as long as I do my part and help the team get better, that's all I could ask for. All the accolades will come as long as I try to work hard for the team. All the little single player accolades will come."

(On Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles' defense)

"He likes to mix it all up. So, [there is] not really one main thing, like a free safety just playing the middle field – I blitz, cover guys, stack the box and different things like that. So, he definitely has a great scheme for our defense. I just try and prepare for whatever he sets me up for and wherever I line up at – wherever he's got me positioned at. Like I said, I've been doing that since college and high school. I've been playing all over the field, so wherever he has me, I'm comfortable."
