St. Petersburg High School's Todd St. Louis (far left) accepts his Coach of the Week award from Jon Gruden
Given that his St. Petersburg High Green Devils currently have a record of 2-6, Todd St. Louis might seem an odd selection as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' High School "Coach of the Week." In fact, he is an excellent choice, because high school football is about more than wins and losses. As St. Louis knows, it's also about developing teenagers into responsible young men. He was honored Wednesday at One Buccaneer place because others feel he excels in that area.
"I don't believe you jeopardize character for wins," said Coach St. Louis. "Once you establish that tradition of character and hard work on the football field, you build championship teams."
Coach St. Louis is on his way to building that championship team. He has previously done so with the programs at St. Petersburg Catholic and Indian Rocks High Schools; it may take a bit longer at St. Pete High, but he's well on his way. In the process, he has shown a commitment to the lives of the young men who make up his roster.
At a ceremony on the Bucs' practice field, Coach St. Louis was presented with a framed "Coach of the Week" certificate, signed by NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, General Manager Rich McKay and Head Coach Jon Gruden. He also received a football autographed from Gruden and a Buccaneers Coach of the Week hat from the team.
In addition to the certificate, hat and ball, Coach St. Louis will also receive a $1,000 donation to his Green Devils football program and had the added bonus of watching the Buccaneers morning practice.
"I'm flattered," said Coach St. Louis. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to be able to coach high school kids and to be selected as the Coach of the Week makes me feel good about what I'm doing."

Several factors are taken into account when selecting the Buccaneers Coach of the Week recipient, including the coach's impact on his or her team, school and community. The program is designed to recognize high school coaches who transform, through their hard work and dedication to young people, the best available athletes into high-potential football players.
