Head Coach Bruce Arians Media Availability - Friday, August 30, 2019

Head Coach Bruce Arians

(Opening statement)

"Not a whole lot to talk about. There will be some names released at four o'clock [and] some more tomorrow. The guys who didn't play will obviously work out here today and the injured guys [will work out] all weekend and get back here Tuesday morning ready to go."

(On what he has heard about when Hurricane Dorian will affect Tampa)

"I talk to 10 people, I'm getting 10 different things – Monday night, Tuesday, Wednesday. It's just play it by ear and I don't think it's going to affect us in any way other than we'll be practicing inside with a lot of noise and be ready to go."

(On what positives he took away from the fourth preseason game)

"I think the biggest thing – as I said last night – we found ways to win. For a team to find ways to win is a great growing area. We could've easily found ways to lose and we didn't. The first game was really on me going for two early in the game. Had we kicked all three extra points, we'd have been undefeated. It was finding ways to win with some guys like Griff (Ryan Griffin) – I think he was really the bright part of the whole preseason. He took young guys, performed well and won ball games in the second half. I thought our starters, other than the few sacks against Cleveland, played pretty solid. They're rested [and] they're ready to go."

(On what positions he is considering carrying an extra player in due to the competition)

"Wide receivers, defensive backs – that's probably been the highest competition areas. Inside linebacker, special teams – I would throw tight ends in there too. That really high competition – I wouldn't be surprised to see guys on other teams from those rooms. The special teams part of it is the deciding factor. One guy might be a better player at his position but he's not as good as the next guy as a special teams player when you start getting down to four, five and six [on the depth chart]."

(On what he saw from the wide receivers competing for the final roster spots)

"Other than one play where they cost us an interception, I thought they all played well. Justin [Watson] has found a good spot on special teams – he's been a good special teamer in the past. Bobo [Wilson] has return ability [and] coverage ability. Scotty [Miller] is feeling his way in those areas. He missed a lot of time, but I think he showed enough promise."

(On if there were any players who played their way onto the roster in the fourth preseason game)

"Yeah, I saw two or three. I'd say Jack [Cichy] was one of them, for sure. Other guys made very compelling cases to be on our practice squad – that they showed improvement, that we would want them in case of emergency and groom them to be the next guy up."

(On how DL Vita Vea is progressing and if he will be able to start in Week 1)

"Yeah, he's progressing very nicely. I'll know more by Tuesday and he'll be here all weekend working out. It'll be close, but I think he'll be there."

(On ILB Lavonte David's status for Week 1)

"Lavonte's fine – he'll be practicing Tuesday."

(On if he was happily surprised that there weren't more miscommunications in the secondary given the young personnel and new coaches)

"Yeah, especially with the rotation of safeties with those guys getting injured, they did a great job. Nick Rapone and Kevin Ross did a great job of just getting those guys prepared, because we were running a lot of coverages. It was a lot of good communication and it was different people every week, all the way down to the last plays last night – there was really good communication amongst the safeties, the corners and the nickels."

(On how the Thursday night game at Carolina in Week 2 will affect the recovery time after the Week 1 game)

"We play week-to-week. We don't worry about Week 2. We're in Week 1 and then we roll the dice for Week 2. Thursday night is what it is. You really don't practice that week – you walk through – because normally you would start a Wednesday routine in practice, [but] you're on a plane and going to the game, so it's a whole different ball game."

(On how much he trusts the player personnel department to find talent)

"I totally trust them and our group. I think when you look at the bottom half of our roster in the second half [of these] games, you saw a lot of talent. This team – like I said when I first got here – they have plenty of talent. When you out and you win like that, it shows that the bottom half of your roster was quality, which is making some of these cuts really tough."

(On how the coaches and personnel team will handle improving certain areas through waivers)

"We've got tape on everybody that we think is getting cut and we are evaluating who fits. If it is better than what we have, then we are going to claim people. Our job is to get them ready. If they are good enough, we'll get them ready Week One. I've taken guys on Tuesdays and played them on Sunday. I actually took a guy on Thursday and played him on Sunday – on Thanksgiving Day I took him out of the woods, and he played 25 snaps on Sunday and played pretty good. That doesn't bother me."

(On if he has any financial restrictions in terms of player acquisitions)

"Well no because contracts will be over. If a guy is making $10 million and he is cut, then he is going back to square one – get some cash and play for whatever you want to play for."

(On what arrangements he made with K Matt Gay, whose wife is expecting a child this week)

"He left from Dallas to go have the baby delivered. The baby did turn finally so it is not breaching anymore, so hopefully we get good news in the next day or so that he is born, and everybody is healthy. Then we will try to get him back here."

(On if the birth of Gay's child will have any impact on the team's decision on K Cairo Santos)

"No, we have had this plan for [Gay] since the beginning. Whatever happens with those two guys in the next 24 hours, happens."

(On the team is considering holding onto one of the kickers for a possible trade scenario)

"The calls have already started coming in, so we will see how that goes in the next 48 hours. With not just kickers, but anybody else that we feel is possibly tradeable and we replace them with someone we might like better."

(On if any players on the Buccaneers active roster could start the season on Injured Reserve)

"On IR? No – just [the candidates for the] Non-Football Injury [list], Nick Fitzgerald and JPP (Jason Pierre-Paul)."

(On the San Francisco 49ers looking to have a strong pass rush)

"Oh, there is no doubt – on paper and film. These guys can get after [the quarterback]. Dee Ford – I had to do a couple of Kansas City games last year and he can really get after it. We loved Nick Bosa in the draft and then [they have DeForest] Buckner and [Arik] Armstead. They've got a defensive line that's got a lot of number ones up there, so yeah, it is going to be a hell of a challenge."

(On when the full preparations get underway for week one)

"We'll put most of it on the board today, offensively and defensively. Then we will take a couple of days and relax ourselves, and then come back Monday and finalize everything for Tuesday's practice."

(On if he can feel the excitement amongst the members of his team)

"Oh, you could feel it on the plane [and] you could feel it in the locker room last night. The guys who knew they were going to be here, they were ready to roll."
