Head Coach Bruce Arians Media Availability - Monday, September 30, 2019

Head Coach Bruce Arians

(Opening statement)

"After watching the film, [I was] really pleased again – probably more so with the resiliency of our football team. We throw the interception, it's 45-40 and nobody blinked. We went right back down the field, made it an eight-point game, [the] defense comes in and wins the game. I think those are huge strides for a young team. It could've easily gone the other way. They put last week behind them when they showed up for work last Wednesday and we'll put this week behind us when we show up for work this Wednesday."

(On RB Ronald Jones II having two long runs called back by penalties)

"Yeah, don't get me started on those two calls."

(On if there is any thought of making Jones the starting RB)

"I like where we're at. Peyton [Barber] had a big game and when RoJo (Ronald Jones II) gets going, he'll stay in there."

(On if it was by design to have Jones play as much as he did in the second half)

"When you get the hot hand – and he had the hot hand [and] he was making people miss. Peyton [Barber] had it in Carolina, so it's a good problem to have to have two guys, and both did a great job of scoring in the red zone."

(On the offensive line's performance in limiting Rams DT Aaron Donald)

"They played fantastic. Harold [Goodwin] and Joe Gilbert had a great plan to try and minimize him as much as possible. That's hard to do, and I thought our guys – our guards, centers – all did a heck of a job with it."

(On the team playing in entertaining games through the first four weeks)

"Yeah, it's going to be interesting until the end [laughs]. I love the fact that we're finding ways to win again. We did it in Carolina, we should've done it against the Giants, but it's all part of that learning experience. I think the team that shows up Wednesday is going to be a much more confident team, knowing that talent's not an issue – it's not talent, it's just whether we play well enough in critical moments."

(On if he has had receivers who can block as well as WR Chris Godwin in the past)

"Yeah, I've been blessed. Hines Ward was one of the best ever. Reggie Wayne bought into it [and] was a physical receiver. Larry Fitzgerald was one of the best blocking receivers the last few years. Chris – that's his role. That's why I love when a guy has the breakout games of [12] catches or whatever for 170 yards, because he's doing all that grimy work. You throw him screen passes in the red zone, not just because they're good at it [but] because they deserve it. He blocked Clay Matthews better than our tight ends did a couple of times."

(On the confidence he has in QB Jameis Winston)

"It's continued growth. It wasn't an indictment because he threw an interception – we were just gaining five yards a clip [in the running game] against the Giants, so why not keep it up? I thought the red zone was the biggest difference in this one – third down and red zone. It was 62 percent – whatever it was – on third down – he played great on third down. The red zone – five out of six – that's the difference in the ball game."

(On Winston's strong play in the last three games)

"He's just growing in the offense. I think Byron [Leftwich] and Clyde [Christensen] are doing a great job with him, fundamentally and mentally. I don't know if anybody's played better the last three weeks than he has, and the numbers should bear it – we put a lot of points up. You jump out 21-0, you get the crowd out of it and then you just keep playing. The one thing I kept preaching was, 'Keep scoring, keep going after it,' because I knew the Rams were going to score some points."

(On if the Rams not running the ball early in the game was a tribute to how effective the run defense has been in the first three weeks)

"I think Sean McVay made a choice that he was going to throw the ball and not try to run it, which, having played them in the past, it's a little bit different. To throw it 70 times or whatever it was – I've never seen it, I've never lost to it and it was a lot of yards. It's a conscious decision. We've [played against] three really good backs that I don't think have 100 yards total between them. We're built to run and stop the run, and then get after the quarterback and take shots. That's our MO and we're not changing."

(On how important fearlessness is to him)

"You have to play fearless and that's one of my biggest messages to Jameis – throw it. Don't worry about it, just throw it and know why you're throwing it. We have to play that way. We still have some young DBs who are playing a little careful, and my message to them is it's time to play fearless. If you make a mistake, you make a mistake, but don't hold your breath – let it go."

(On how much this win helps with the team getting ready to play four consecutive games away from home)

"Yeah, it doesn't look as bad right now. You've got one under your belt, we've got two big road wins, so we know we can handle crowd noise and we know we can handle the road. So, it's not as daunting as it was back in August and when you look at it. Obviously, any time you go to New Orleans, it's different. It's probably the loudest and hardest place to play because [there is] great noise, but a great team."

(On ILB Lavonte David's performance through the first four weeks after missing the preseason)

"He's at a point in his career [where] he probably doesn't need preseason. It was an injury that scared me, because I knew how good he is. He's a great tackler [and] he forces turnovers. I've got to give M.J. Stewart a little credit because he played that slant and made [Jared] Goff hold it just a tick, and Lavonte made a great play on it."

(On ILB Jack Cichy's status after being injured on Sunday)

"MRIs are not back in, but his elbow – it could be two to four weeks."

(On if Cichy had an MRI on Monday morning)

"Yeah."

(On WR Breshad Perriman's status)

"He's got a hamstring. I don't know yet – he's in the tube right now also, so we'll see the extent of it. But I liked the way the young receivers stepped in and played. It was a shame – Scotty Miller had an opportunity for his first touchdown and Jameis [Winston] got hit right when he let it go, because he had split the coverage and was about 10 yards behind him."

(On all 12 of WR Chris Godwin's receptions going for first downs or touchdowns)

"That's a pretty good stat. That's the thing – when you're running the ball and you're blocking like he does, there are a lot of opportunities around the middle of the field to make big plays – and outside. Again, it goes back to our philosophy – mine, personally – if you're willing to do it, I'm willing to get you the ball."

(On ILB Devin White's recovery from a knee injury)

"I'm anxious to see and Jamel [Dean] run today. Hopefully, they'll practice Wednesday."

(On if he would prefer for RB T.J. Logan to take a touchback on his 13-yard kick return in the fourth quarter)

"Yeah, I thought T.J. should've stayed in. That last one I thought was a poor decision on his part. He got the one out to the 28 [yard line], but the ball was kicked opposite of our return. It was just a poor decision."

(On what CB Ryan Smith can bring to the team in his return from suspension)

"Speed on special teams. He's a special teams player and we look forward to having him back."
