TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 8-23-22

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On conducting practice in the indoor training facility today)

"We play indoors, so after that heated one yesterday, we decided to go inside."

(On moving S Antoine Winfield Jr. around to multiple positions, including the slot)

"We're trying to get the nuances down for him. Everybody else pretty much knows it. We think he is very physical down there, he is one of our better blitzers and he is one of our better cover guys, so we're just trying him out and getting him some action for different games."

(On Winfield Jr.'s abilities despite his size)

"Winfield, he's a football player – he plays just like his dad. He is a little quicker. He is short, but he is compact, he is heady, tough and understands the game. You can't replace that."

(On the focus for preseason games)

"It's important for us to develop chemistry and cohesiveness. It's not necessarily to win because everybody plays. You want to win every game, but we understand we want to look at everybody even more so. Making sure they understand the mistakes they made the game before and correcting them in the last game is important, especially with the last cuts."

(On if he has an update on the kicker competition)

"No, it's going to come down to the last week and we will make the decision after that."

(On what he likes about S Nolan Turner)

"He's a very smart player. He rarely makes the same mistakes twice. You don't call his name a lot because he is always in position. A heady guy like that can do a lot of things. We want to see him on special teams this week, take a good look at him and we will go from there."

(On WR Breshad Perriman)

"He's in the mix. He just came off an injury, so he missed a lot of time. He's got some things to make up for, but he has played for us in the past and has always been willing to go play special teams."

(On if the schedule has transitioned more into a regular season type of mode and if the team has started to prepare for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1)

"We are working on a lot of things that hurt us last year, right now. We will start working on Dallas after Indy. We're trying to get the format down, so we don't just jump into it the week of the game."

(On if WR Breshad Perriman plays on special teams)

"He does play special teams. He will play gunner and he will play kickoff return – he plays about as much as everybody else. He has just been hurt. We've run him down on kickoff before and he's been a gunner before, so he's in the same boat with the rest of the receivers."

(On how comfortable he is having QB Tom Brady and his experience against the blitz)

"It's great to know that he's seen everything. The time he's spent in the league – he's seen everything, he knows how to get rid of the football, he understands what people are trying to do to him, so I feel comfortable with that."

(On if G Luke Goedeke will be starting in Week 3 of the preseason)

"I haven't decided yet, but he's been taking some first-team reps. We've been kind of juggling guys with [Aaron] Stinnie down, so we'll make that decision probably tomorrow."

(On which starters will be playing on Saturday)

"We haven't met as a coaching staff to discuss that yet."

(On if he has any concerns about T Tristian Wirfs being ready for Week 1)

"Right now, no. I mean, I hear he's on schedule, so right now, we'll take it day by day, but I don't think so."

(On if the offensive line will be ready to go by Week 1)

"We'll try to get better every day and this week. We lost some depth, and we lost some players, obviously Ryan [Jensen] was a big one, [Aaron Stinnie] played for us too, but we've got guys that we think can step in. They probably need some experience on the field, but we're confident on what they can do."

(On what he's liked about C Ryan Hainsey)

"Well, you like his toughness, and you like his intelligence. They ran the ball a lot at Notre Dame, so he can recognize defenses and help everybody out up there. You know, we want to get better at all the technical and fundamental work, but he's stepped in and hasn't looked back. He's been playing tough, but as has [Nick] Leverett. You could say the same thing about both guys and that's a tough competition."

(On the status-quo at the center position)

"I don't know if it's been 'status-quo.' There's been some learning things along the way and there will continue to be. They're getting better every day, and the more experience they get, the better they'll be."

(On how S Keanu Neal is coming along and if he'll be ready for Week 1)

"He's coming along pretty good. He should be [ready for Week 1]."

SAFETY LOGAN RYAN

(On the dog who joined his press conference today through the Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation and in conjunction with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay)

"This is Cora. She's an adoptable dog here at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. She's about five years old [and] she's a terrier mix. She's been in the shelter about 81 days, I believe, so that's quite some time. I know the Humane Society of Tampa Bay will provide a gift card for supplies when you adopt her and she's also one of my scholarship dogs, [which means] she'll come with free training for four weeks. So, as you guys know, I have the Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation (RARF) – [I'm] much more than a football player, I try to be – and I'm all about animals like this – shelter dogs who are looking for a home. Beautiful dog, extremely active – I heard she can go on some cross-country hikes. She can walk, she can jog, she loves the heat, loves to be out in the grass, so just a lot of fun. As you see, we met less than 30 minutes ago and she's already sitting on my lap doing a great interview with me. So, I think she's a pretty easy dog to adjust your household to."

(On the origin of his passion for animals)

"Animal well-fare came from my wife. My wife worked in an animal shelter when she was my girlfriend in Boston, and she got a job there and I realized how little she was getting paid for the work she was putting in and I really felt for the whole industry. I would go visit her and the dogs, and I saw a lot of dogs not being adopted and I was sad. My wife was coming home, trying to find ways to get these dogs adopted, so I started throwing them up on Instagram called Ryan's Monthly Rescue. So, I was putting adoptable dogs on my social media so different types of people could see these dogs and give them a second chance and I did that for a year and all 12 dogs got adopted – once a month. All these dogs were in the shelter for at least a year, they came with some medical issues and needed surgeries, they were blind, deaf – they're not easy-to-adopt dogs and I saw that there was something there and just thought they needed to get more eyes on them, so I dedicated and started a foundation soon later to provide for shelter animals."

(On S Nolan Turner)

"I mean shoot, I'm proud of him. He plays both strong-safety and free-safety and he can fill in. You have to be smart to play in this secondary – that's what I learned right away – and he's able to do it. He's beating guys out because he's smart and not afraid. We even made him sing his rookie song and he sang 'Biggie' word for word, so he wasn't afraid about that either. He's definitely showing up everyday and doing well for himself and I'm proud of him."

SAFETY ANTOINE WINFIELD JR.

(On the addition of S Logan Ryan)

"He's a vet man. Great player, super smart so having him in the room has been great. Just to pick his mind about different things, different coverages, and the way he sees the field. It's been great to have him in there."

(On if S Logan Ryan had any advice for him)

"It's just more so just talking to him about how he thinks I should play this situation versus what he's done and what has worked in the past. It's just been little things like that I really use him [for]."

(On what has impressed him about rookie S Nolan Turner)

"He's very smart, very cerebral. He picked up the scheme fast, he's out there running with the ones, running with us. He's just very smart and picked it up very fast."

(On what are the biggest adjustments for rookie safeties transitioning to the NFL)

"I would say it's a lot coming in. Learning a new defense, making all the calls and checks and things like that. I feel like they throw a lot at you in the beginning but once you start doing everything in practice, it becomes easier. I would say that was the toughest part, making sure I got all my checks and all my calls down."

(On WR Tyler Johnson's progression from Minnesota to the NFL)

"We came in together, same class. Went to Minnesota together and came here together so it's been cool to see his transition over time. Coming in early, he was just like myself – we both played as freshmen and kind of just grew and continued to get better and better. I feel like every year Tyler continues to get better in all aspects of his game, whether it's route running, his releases and things like that. I feel like he's continuing to grow."
