HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On WR Chris Godwin returning to practice)
"It was good seeing him out there running around, getting some individual work in. It's always a plus when he's in uniform."
(On if the defense performed well on Friday)
"They started fast. There was a lot of give and take – that's what camp is all about, making each other better. The offense is going to win some, the defense is going to win some."
(On if rookie CB Zyon McCollum is performing more confidently)
"Just playing faster and understanding what he has to do and where his help is. It's going to take a while for the young guys – back there especially – but he's handling it well."
(On if he knows when Godwin will be able to take part in team drills)
"Not yet. We're not going to rush him, -- we're just glad to see him out there working right now. As it goes on, we'll see."
(On QB Tom Brady not being at practice)
"He had an excused absence."
(On if Brady will be back at practice on Saturday)
"We'll let him do what he needs to do. If he's back tomorrow, that's great, but we'll keep in touch and we'll monitor that."
(On if there is an update on WR Mike Evans' status after he left practice early)
"Not yet. I saw him walk in. He might have tweaked a hamstring, but I'll see when I go inside."
(On if rookie G Luke Goedeke is still in the mix at left guard)
"He still gets in the mix. The other guys have been here. Experience-wise, as we install, they kind of know it already. It's good for Luke to see somebody do it before he does it, rather than just go out there and just make a mistake that way. We're getting the older guys in there some that [have] been here. As he gets experience, he'll play a lot. It's still an open competition."
(On if the other quarterbacks are taking advantage of extra reps with Brady not in practice)
"Mentally, they're getting a lot of reps. It can only help them. It can only help them get reps and see everything full-speed and going against the first defense. Blaine [Gabbert] is seasoned, obviously. He's getting some good looks and Kyle [Trask] is getting a lot of experience."
(On if he saw what Godwin was able to do on the field)
"I saw him doing individual [drills]. He's running around. That's a whole different thing than playing football. Running around is a whole different thing. So, we don't have our hopes up – we're just happy he's making progress."
(On if there will be three-safety looks on defense)
"It will all be part of the game plan. We're moving a lot of guys around right now in case of injuries or things like that. But we do have that package, it just hasn't gone in yet."
(On if there's any difference in how he's run training camp this year compared to his time with the Jets)
"I'm sure it's a lot different. I haven't sat down and looked at the ways. Obviously, I've been here three years so it's going to be different. I was walking into a situation there where you build and do different things. You know things differently about the game and you understand things differently about how you want to practice, and I'm sure those things I probably tweaked a little bit."
CORNERBACK JAMEL DEAN
(On his mindset heading into this year's training camp)
"I feel confident going into this year knowing I'm getting my hands on balls more. I'm putting myself in situations to make plays and I'm just understanding the game better."
(On the presence of veterans in the secondary)
"I mean, the secondary's getting pretty smooth now, knowing that we [have] more vets, like older vets into the system because they've been in the game longer than us, they understand the game a little better. And then seeing Logan [Ryan], he's good at disguising, reading concepts, so that's real big for our system because if you know what the defense is, you know what routes to expect."
(On the defense's performance today in practice)
"It was a great day for the defense, but we still didn't meet our standards. We're supposed to get five turnovers a practice – I think we got two. So, we didn't meet the standards today, but it was still overall a good practice for us communication-wise and just working our techniques."
(On the emphasis placed on avoiding busts in coverage)
"I mean communication is big for us because knowing that many games that we lost – it's always because of communication. It could be one or two, but that one or two makes a huge difference in the game."
RUNNING BACK RACHAAD WHITE
(On how comfortable he is out on the field)
"Things have been coming together well for me. Like you said, I've been here for a week and a half of training camp practice so you kind of have the same schedule routine, you know what to expect every day -- just different scenarios. Just knowing the playbook more and more every day -- it's great to come out here and be confident and just play fast."
(On the upcoming preseason games and playing live game action)
"Especially just being live in general, it's just a different aspect of the game -- being tackled and breaking tackles and things like that. It's a lot of excitement going into next week and [there] being a preseason game -- just being able to show what you can do and ways you can help out the team."
(On seeing WR Chris Godwin out at practice)
"I was happy to see C.G. out there. Since I've got here, me and C.G. talked a lot, he's been a leader and a mentor to me. Just to see him hurt and how much rehab and how much hard work it takes to come back from an injury like that -- for me it was amazing to see him out there in pads."
(On if he has received any advice from RB Leonard Fournette)
"He's said some good things about me? I didn't even know 'Lenny' liked me [laughs]. No, he's cool. Lenny, that's my guy. I just pick his brain on a lot of things, just being out there football wise. Just being young and come in and adjust to the game and how to play ball. We just talk about a lot of stuff, and he just helps me and tells me that I'm not going to get it in a day. When he was a rookie, he went through the same thing. That's just been good to hear. He's been a great leader."
(On the adjustment period from college to NFL)
"The big adjustment for me is just the play speed, as well as just the knowledge. Understanding the game and how much more technical this level is than college is."
