Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Buccaneer Quotes, Oct. 7

Head Coach Greg Schiano

(On how the self-evaluation of the team went during the bye week)

"It was good. Now the players will have off tomorrow again, so we'll have some more time to kind of finalize the game plan for Philly [Philadelphia Eagles] and then get at it on Wednesday, but today was kind of a bonus day, which was good. The evaluation stuff I think we've looked at a bunch of things, both as a staff and with our players. I think some things have come to light or have to come to a head and some things we need to adjust. You always use this time to add a few things that you didn't quite get to if there's something that's come up since you broke camp. It's been a good period, good time, and now we have to finalize this game plan."

(On what will get added to the game plan now they have had a bye week to evaluate the team)

"We talked about it last week, I think throwing the ball down the field some more – it wasn't for a lack of trying, sometimes defenses take you out of it by coverage and things like that. I think [running back] Jeff Demps is getting more and more comfortable so I think there's some things we can do with him, he's a valuable weapon. Defensively, we have a unique set of challenges with the offense that Philly's running. They're exceptional right now. After five games they're historic right now with their numbers. We certainly have our hands full and it's a well coached team. A team that knows exactly what they're executing. They vary the tempo, overall it's an up-tempo, but sometimes it's extremely up-tempo. We need to be able to get ready to play, get our eyes on our work and get to work on defense. It's one of those deals where it can go small gain, small gain, explosive play, because they've gotten their opponents on their heels a couple of times, and then they have weapons. [Eagles running back LeSean] Shady McCoy is as an elusive runner that there is in this league. I don't know what's going to happen with the quarterback situation with Mike Vick or with [Nick] Foles, we'll have to see. But I think the nuts and bolts of that offense will remain consistent, certainly with different emphasis depending on who the quarterback is, so we have to prepare for both; but I think the scheme itself is going to remain constant."

(On former quarterback Josh Freeman moving on to the Minnesota Vikings)

"He's moved to another team. I guess the best way to summarize it for us is that we've moved on. That's kind of how I feel. We've moved on and it's time to go."

(On if he has broken the past quarter of the season down)

"I hear a lot of people do that, I really don't. I kind of go one game seasons like we've talked about and I just think they're all equal and if you look at it, I guess quarters is a way to segment it, so you can put that quarter behind you. I look at as maybe 16 individual rounds. You know it used to be the old 15-round fight, this is 16-round fight. We may be down on the card a little bit right now, but there's a lot of fight left."

(On personnel moves following bye week evaluation)

"I don't know if it will be because [of evaluation]. We're going to start getting some guys back healthy now, which [tight end] Tom Crabtree did more today. So I'm hoping that tomorrow he gets back and he feels good and Wednesday we're at full go. [Cornerback] Mike Adams did some stuff, I don't know if we'll get him back or not, it's going to be close. [Defensive tackle] Derek Landri, he did a lot of good things today, so I'm hoping Wednesday he might be back. So that's a good thing. So that could kind of influence [the roster] and that could influence the 46 [active players on game day] as well. Right now we do have an open roster spot. We're going to wait and see what to do with that, but there's a lot of different ways you could go with that."

(On having only two quarterbacks on the active roster)

"We actually brought in Jordan Rodgers as a practice squad third quarterback. We feel good about that. We had worked him out a couple weeks ago. He's a ball guy. He fits in that room very well. That makes us feel better. Can you [have only two quarterbacks on the roster]? Sure. We chose not to operate with just two in the whole building."

(On other roster moves)

"The other guy we added was Kelcie McCray, safety from Miami. He was out there practicing today and getting work. We'll see how he does, but he quickly picked up the scheme, so we'll see."

(On Rodgers)

"Good blood lines, number one, right? His brother has done some things in this league. But he's his own man. Since college, [general manager] Mark [Dominik] and I have both had our eye on him. There's something about him. He's a competitor. He's not the biggest guy. He's just a fiery guy who's a baller. When we had him out at the workout, we weren't ready to do anything, but he caught our eye. He fits in our building. He's a ball guy, he loves it. [He's] a grinder, likes to study, likes to be around football, likes to be around the locker room, and we're looking for as many of those guys as we can put in this building."

(On if safety Mark Barron has recovered at all from injury)

"He practiced well today, so yeah. We'll see how tomorrow is, but I hope we're past that."

(On his comments to suite holders)

"Sometimes you say things in context. That statement was really about the discipline and the issues that were going on. It wasn't the on-field football. I apologize if I offended anybody with that, because that was certainly not the purpose. That was our suite holders and the question was in reference to some of the discipline and some of the things that, as I've shared with you guys, I had to be a little over-the-top, because it was the adjustment to how far the other way things had gotten. That's really what I meant, but taken out of context, I can see, certainly, how it could be offensive, and it certainly wasn't meant to be that in any way."

DE Da'Quan Bowers

(On the challenges that the Eagles' offense presents)

"It's definitely a challenge. They [have] a great team, they have excellent athletes at quarterback in [Michael] Vick and [Nick] Foles, and then that guy at running back [isn't] a slouch either. It's going to be a tough game for us, but this extra day and this bye week has given us a lot of chances to work on our offense and work on our defensive schemes, so hopefully, it can carry over."

(On why the Eagles' offense is so challenging for opposing defenses)

"For one, the tempo – it's not a modern thing you see in the NFL, how fast they run plays, and you don't see a whole lot of zone read in the NFL, especially not with those two types of athletes back there with Vick and [running back LeSean] McCoy. We've just got to play detailed football and stay locked in on the defensive side of the ball and try to knock that running game out."

(On his mindset after the bye week heading into this Sunday)

"We definitely need a win. We can't erase the past; we're 0-4; there's no 'ifs,' 'ands' or 'buts' and no situation can make that better. We've just got to come in this week ready to play football. Our next task is the Eagles; we're going to go in with the mindset of starting this one-game season and the Eagles happen to be the first game. We're looking for a win, definitely try to get back in the win column."

LB Dekoda Watson

(On the Philadelphia Eagles offense)

"We're just going to make sure that we pick everything apart. Like you said, it can be overwhelming, but at the same time, there are certain things that we can pick up. We're going to try to defend certain ways, as far as our game plan and just make sure that we are on top of our game. There's a lot of weapons back there, starting with [quarterback] Michael Vick. [Running back LeSean] McCoy [is] definitely another weapon, and their run game is something serious, so we're just going to definitely have to make sure that we be on our P's and Q's and make sure we tackle."

(On if the team has a 'new beginning' following the bye)

"I don't think it's necessarily a new beginning. There are a lot of good things that we have done, but we've just got to continue to build. I don't want to say we want to start fresh or start new, because, if we do that, I feel like we're back-tracking. We're just going to go in there, we're going to tweak things and get things better."

(On wanting a win)

"I want to win, period. Whether we've got a winning season or a losing season, I want to win, period. Each week, it's very vital that we get a win."
