Times have been good for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this decade, and the franchise is doing what it can to keep those good times rolling.
On Thursday, the Buccaneers announced that both General Manager Jason Licht and Head Coach Todd Bowles have been signed to multi-year contract extensions. Licht has been in his post since 2014, while Bowles has been the team's head coach since 2022 after three seasons as its defensive coordinator.
Under the stewardship of Licht and Bowles, the Buccaneers have enjoyed five straight seasons that ended in playoff berths, the longest such stretch in franchise history. Tampa Bay has also won the NFC South in each of the last four seasons, a franchise first, and can become the first team to do so five straight times in 2025. Bowles is the first head coach to guide the Buccaneers to three straight division titles. The Buccaneers also claimed their second Super Bowl championship at the end of the 2020 season.
"Jason and Todd's excellent leadership and vision have been critical to our organizational success, and the winning culture they have established has us well positioned into the future," said Buccaneers Owner/Co-Chairman Joel Glazer. "Jason has evolved into one of the top talent evaluators and general managers in the NFL, while Todd has led us to three consecutive division titles and is one of the league's leading defensive minds. Under their guidance, we will continue building towards another championship."
Over the past five seasons, the Buccaneers have tallied 57 wins overall and 51 regular-season victories, which like their run of division titles and playoff appearances, matches or exceeds any other five-year span in team history. Tampa Bay is the only team in the NFL to make the playoffs each of the last five years, and one of only three in the NFL, joining Buffalo and Kansas City.
Much of the Buccaneers' current run of success has been the product of a talent-laden roster built primarily through consecutive successful drafts. Licht's crew drafted 38 players in Rounds One through Six in the 2019-24 drafts, and all of them were on NFL rosters during the 2024 season. No other team in the league can claim the same 100% success rate in that span. Of the 50 players who started a game for the Buccaneers in the past two division-winning seasons, 40 were either drafted by Licht or signed as undrafted rookies.
"I am very grateful to the Glazer Family for the trust and belief they have shown in what we are doing here," said Licht. "Their commitment to providing the resources along with their dedication to fostering a winning culture throughout our entire building are the primary reasons for the great success we have enjoyed these past five seasons. I am also very excited to continue working alongside Todd well into the future as we continue our mission of finding and developing talented players and chasing additional championships for our great fans."
After coordinating a defense that was essential to the team's Super Bowl postseason run in 2020, Bowles has translated that successful leadership to the entire team since succeeding the retired Bruce Arians in 2022. The Buccaneers have won 27 regular-season games under his guidance, the second most for a head coach in his first three seasons in franchise history, after Arians' 31. Bowles' teams have displayed a remarkable resilience, compiling a 10-2 record in December and January over the past two seasons, each time successfully rallying to win the NFC South.
Bowles also continues to produce outstanding results from the Buccaneers' defense. Since he arrived in 2019, the Bucs rank first in rushing yards allowed per game (93.8), yards per carry allowed (4.0) and fumble recoveries (68). The Tampa Bay defense is also second in that span in sacks (281) and fifth in red zone touchdown percentage allowed (53.8%). Buccaneer opponents have been held to 20 points or fewer in 45 games since 2019.
"I am extremely appreciative of the confidence that the Glazer Family has shown in my abilities to lead this football team. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly and am honored to have," said Bowles. "It starts at the top, and their unwavering commitment to our organization allows us to perform at our best and compete for championships. I am equally excited to continue working with Jason for years to come as we build on the success we've enjoyed and keep reaching for even bigger and better goals."
