TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS TRANSCRIPT 1-10-22: HEAD COACH BRUCE ARIANS

(On players who might return from Injured Reserve this week)

"Leonard [Fournette] looks great. He's been working [well], and he should be back. Shaq [Barrett] and 'JPP' (Jason Pierre-Paul) should both be back. Lavonte [David] – he will be the one that is the closest [call], but he is starting to move around pretty good, so we'll wait and see. I'm still waiting to hear about Jamel Dean. That's the one that has me concerned from this ballgame. Those guys that are on IR and had been out, I expect all of them to be back, maybe Lavonte cannot."

(On how he sees the defense matching up with the Eagles top-ranked run offense)

"We haven't done a good job in the last two weeks because everybody is trying to go wide on us and stay away from those big guys in the middle. We just have to do a better job of setting edges. Anthony Nelson did a heck of a job and played a great ballgame again. Two weeks in a row he got a game ball. Getting those guys back to have that rotation. But we have to [do] a better job of starting the game faster. We defer and we're giving up points. We have to get that fixed."

(On what caused Tampa Bay to fall from its previous spot as the league's top ranked run defense earlier in the season, and whether it is due to injuries)

"I think it's a combination of things. I think a bigger part of it is Lavonte [David] also with just his calming influence as a leader out there. And just missed tackles – we've missed some tackles out on the edges that we can't miss because they always end up as big gainers. We had a mental error on a 22-yard run last week where we just chased the passer instead of just hitting the cut back, with young players. I think getting those things corrected, but we have to tackle better."

(On how OLB Shaq Barrett and OLB Jason Pierre-Paul will help stop the run)

"They both do a good job with it. For me, it's having them all fresh for the run and the pass. To have that four-man rotation, five with Cam Gill – it's just veteran players play differently than younger players. They never panic, so getting all of those guys back I think will help the run defense tremendously."

(On if he has an update regarding WR Cyril Grayson's hamstring)

"It's not quite as bad as he thought. His availability this week will be in question."

(On why QB Tom Brady should be the MVP this season)

"I think if he doesn't get it, it's a travesty. I mean most completions ever, 5,000-yards, [43] touchdowns, the whole nine-yards. To me, it's not even a close race."

(On if the Eagles defense relies on the four-man rush or if they are a blitz team)

"Predominately, the four-man rush, and it's a damn good one. Fletcher Cox – he is one of the best there is and Javon Hargrave, he's in there. They do blitz some, but predominately they're going to try and keep it in front of them and let that front four hunt."

(On if this playoff run feels different compared to last season now that being in the playoffs is not new to this team)

"Yeah, it's totally different and they know how to raise the level. I'm anxious to see us on the practice field this week. Last year, we almost practiced too hard because they were so excited. You raise your level of everything – preparation, practice, everything – for the playoffs. I can't wait to see us Wednesday."

(On re-signing NT Vita Vea and how his presence has contributed over the last few years)

"That group works so well together. Vita is a little different body type than most everybody in this league. [I'm] really happy for him and glad for the organization to have that done. Our front has been playing really, really well. The guys around him need to pick it up a little bit."

(On multiple players suffering from hamstring injuries this season)

"We have one of the best sports science programs in the league so that stuff just happens. Cyril [Grayson] is a track guy, he's warmed up and everything. It just takes one little slip and you tweak it. It's just one of those things."

(On how the team handled the Eagles QB Jalen Hurts in the Week 6 contest and what Hurts presents as a both a runner and a passer)

"I thought in the first half we handled it really well and in the second half, it was more of the offense not staying on the field and giving them too many opportunities. They started popping some runs and he started making some plays with his legs. Sam Darnold caught us a little bit with his legs [yesterday] and Jalen is a lot faster. He presents a lot of problems. He's thrown it well. Obviously, all of the read options and RPOs that they do, it's a different style of offense. It's going to take a hell of a concerted effort on everybody being disciplined and tackling well."

(On why LB Devin White has not consistently produced double-digit tackles in games this year like he has in the past)

"Just part of the way the game is being played with all that perimeter stuff. He's a sideline-to-sideline guy, but he's getting blocked sometimes. People are accounting for him a little bit more, and he can play better. I think he would be the first one to tell you. And he might be a little bit pressing with Lavonte [David] out, so we'll see."

(On the production of Eagles WR DeVonta Smith)

"He's a hell of a player. I loved him coming out and they know how to use him. I think they have a good rapport with Jalen [Hurts]. That'll be a tough cover because when you get so wound up in the running game, you cannot forget about him, or he'll strike quick on you."

(On QB Tom Brady leaning on TE Rob Gronkowski this season and how much that has helped this season)

"Whenever 'Gronk' is in there, he's a focal point, so it really doesn't matter what other receivers are out there. It's how they play. They were giving him the middle of the field in this game and Tom just found him every time. I don't anticipate that to happen all the time, but they were doing some really good blitzes in the Cover-2, but they weren't covering him down the middle. If we picked up the blitzes, which we did, we're going to hurt him. I don't think having Chris [Godwin] or Antonio [Brown means], 'Oh, we're feeding Gronk.' That's just the way the game is being played and he's making the most of it."

(On how crucial the offensive line has been to the offense's success this season and if they are under appreciated)

"They're not under appreciated by me, that's for sure. That's the one area – knock on wood – where we've been staying healthy and that's huge. We have Tom [Brady], [and] when we have the O-line, we have a chance."

(On if recent distractions have galvanized this team)

"I think those things can do that, but I think our guys are just prepared. Once we figure the other team out, they're in trouble, when Tom [Brady] figures you out. We had a big play in the first play of the game and we picked up a blitz, but we don't finish it or we would have had a big play to start the game – just little things like that. Like I said Jason [Licht], 'Spy' (John Spytek) and those guys in the front office – they've given us a hell of a roster. Every time a guy has had an opportunity, he stepped in and stepped up. Breshad Perriman's catch to me was a game-changing play in that game to get us that touchdown. Can it galvanize you? Yeah, but I think our guys are ready anyways."

(On if the best team, rather than the team with the most talent, can win the Super Bowl)

"I don't think there's any doubt. It's how you execute. When you go out there and you have no penalties [and] no turnovers on offense, you're giving yourself a chance. The most talented team doesn't win just because you're talented. You have to go out there and play. You have to make those plays. I really look forward to this week and it's one game at a time. It's a one game season and it's a hell of a lot of fun."

(On if he wishes organizations would be more patient with coaches)

"Yeah, you hope. If you're .500 anymore, you're getting your [butt] fired quick. .A .500 [win percentage] used to keep your job for a while. You never know why guys are let go but it's hard. It was me way too many times. Black Monday is a bad day. Usually you go home and toast to everybody on this day and wish them well because it's hard. It's hard on their families, too."

(On how QB Tom Brady gameplans and prepares during the playoffs)

"Nothing really different than every single week. Byron [Leftwich] does a great job with the staff and 'Goodie' [Harold Goodwin] with the running game. Tom has embraced it. He brings a couple of ideas, but he doesn't come in here and put the gameplan in, that's for damn sure. That's all Byron."
