HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On if any player is standing out)
"I've got to look at the tape. I thought the defensive backs played a lot better today in the red zone area as far as understanding techniques. I've got to look at the tape to see overall."
(On CB Benjamin Morrison intercepting another pass in Tuesday's practice)
"He made a great play the first play. Mike [Evans] adjusted the route after he read it. [Morrison] got an interception on the second play. He's a very smart player – he can see things before they happen, but he still has to cover him."
(On if he's pleased that training camp has been back and forth in terms of the offense and defense both having good days)
"Yeah, as a coach, you want to see back and forth. It's been great competition so far, we've just got to continue to make each other better."
(On CB Benjamin Morrison getting practice reps with the first team)
"We throw a bunch of people in with the one's, just to see what they're doing. Morrison has learned enough where he can go in with the one's and not flinch. We want to see, when we throw guys in there, how they respond. Some guys go into the tank and some guys respond. He responded."
(On how Offensive Coordinator Josh Grizzard has been performing in the call-it periods throughout training camp)
"He's executing [well]. It's call-it period, but at the same time, it's install period as well. He's not completely calling the game but he's calling what he has in, and he's executing those very well."
(On if he plans to play players any differently this preseason than in years past)
"We're going to change. [The starters] are going to play. They may play the second game, they may play the third game – it depends. We play Buffalo, so we'll see. We haven't worked that part of it out yet. They're going to play."
(On if he and Randy Shannon have ever coached on the same staff before)
"We never overlapped. We ran across each other a few times – I've seen him when he was in college, I've seen him when he was in the pro's. He's a heck of a coach and it's great to have him around here. He's somebody to look at in the future."
(On what he likes about RB Sean Tucker)
"He's done exactly what he did last year when we put him in the ballgame – he makes plays. He's a very good runner, he finds holes, he has a low center of gravity, he can break tackles. He's exactly what you want."
(On RB Josh Williams and RB DJ Williams not practicing on Tuesday night)
"Depending on how long they're out, we're going to need to address it because we're kind of short back there now."
(On how excited he is to see what TE Devin Culp can do with more snaps)
"This is one of the guys I wanted to see tonight, so I'll be interested to watch the tape on him. I know he can run and catch the football, but to play an overall game, I want to see how his progression is."
(On how Culp is as a blocker)
"He's feisty. He can stick his face in there. It's just a matter of maintaining it."
(On if a night practice is a good way to change things up)
"After coming out in the heat yesterday in the first day of full pads, it'll get them back energy wise – going at night and then going inside for a day off. They'll have more energy than if they would have been outside."
(On if he likes what he sees from new offensive lineman Mike Jordan)
"So far. He's still learning the scheme, so some of the things aren't fair when he just gets in there and there's a lot of things thrown at him from the other side of the football. He's feisty and he finishes blocks. As he continues to learn, we'll get a better evaluation, hopefully."
(On if he's impressed at how hard WR Mike Evans practices)
"I'm impressed every day, actually. He could have had the day off and he's taking some extra reps today and got better on the inside. That's just credit to him wanting to be great."
(On if there's any update on WR Chris Godwin Jr.)
"He's progressing. He's getting better each day. He's progressing. We'll see in the future."
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR JOSH GRIZZARD
(On how his first time calling plays against a Todd Bowles-led defense has gone)
"It's a lot of fun. It's definitely a challenge. I knew that coming into it, but, every day, trying to figure out where the blitzers are coming from and trying to get to a good play has been a great test for the offense as well as myself…To try to take our system and see how it's fitting into the scheme, going against him. Everybody is working hard. It's good to get into pads and see how that shows up real versus being in underwear. We're off to a good start and I'm looking forward to tonight. It's been fun."
(On how much he knows about what Head Coach Todd Bowles plans to call, defensively, each day in practice)
"That's the beauty of it. We have our install, they have their install, and it doesn't necessarily match. They could run something where whatever we're going to run isn't going to work, and vice versa. We have an idea on what's happening, but, especially during the call-it periods – which we've had a ton of so far – you don't necessarily know what you're getting. It feels good just to go out there and call a play and have everybody – especially the quarterback – react to what we're seeing on defense and trying to get into an optimal play."
(On if he thinks each day is becoming easier for him in his new role)
"I do. Absolutely. Even back to the spring up to this point, there's definitely much more comfortability with it. The nature of some of the periods being 20 minutes or 25 minutes, where you're calling plays back-to-back-to-back-to-back whether it's the one's, two's, or three's. It's just 25-30 plays in a row, versus in the season – not that it's easy – but you're looking at a seven, eight, or 12-play drive that could last five or six minutes, whereas this one is 25 minutes and it's nonstop thinking. It's been a lot of fun."
(On T Charlie Heck filling in at left tackle and how that changes the offensive gameplan)
"Right now, it's stayed the same. We'll see how that progresses moving forward. We have our base install and he's been off to a good start. We're just running the concepts that we had back in the spring, and it's just good for him to have the communication – especially with the great job that Graham [Barton] is doing, and being besides 'Breds' (Ben Bredeson) on the communication. Especially with the blitzes we're having out there, we're trying to be on the same page and trying to pick that up. He's off to a good start. Again, we're not really adjusting it and we might not have to adjust it. At this point, he's just been out there playing ball."
(On WR Emeka Egbuka's maturity)
"He's been, in a great way, as expected. Even though there's that expectation with him coming in as a first-round pick, he's even exceeded that. His communication skills are off the charts, and his ability to pick up the scheme. It's different for, say, 'J-Mac' (Jalen McMillan) coming back and it's similar verbiage and things of that nature. What [Emeka] has been able to do as a rookie has been unbelievable. Once the ball is snapped, and you guys have seen it, he's been getting open. You can tell how strong he is through the catch – his YAC has been great. Of course, he's a really good blocker. He's such a cultural fit, as well, it's been off to a good start for him."
(On if Egbuka's presence has made it easier to be without WR Chris Godwin Jr.)
"You're never going to replace Chris, because of what he does both on and off the field. But, it is good to have another weapon in there, whether it be in the pass game or the run game. We can now spread the ball around and get it to him as much as possible."
(On seeing WR Mike Evans mentoring the team's younger wide receivers)
"It's constant. They're just so fortunate from Tez [Johnson] to 'Mek' (Emeka Egbuka) to Garrett (Greene) to be able to learn from them. We just had a walk through this morning and we can coach it up, but Chris [Godwin Jr.] and Mike were coaching up the concept just as much as myself and [Wide Receivers Coach] 'B-Mac' (Bryan McClendon) were. And that's just on the field – I can't imagine what they talk about off the field on how to be a pro and how to conduct themselves. They couldn't have come into a better environment for people to learn from."
(On QB Baker Mayfield and WR Mike Evans' connection)
"That's what you would hope, with them being together now for the third season and having similar systems. You want that continuity – them to be on the same page – especially when it comes to [us calling a route] and their ability to then change that if they need to based on what the coverage dictates. 'Bake' (Baker Mayfield) hit on it: even though we were good at something last year, it doesn't mean we're going to be good on it this year unless we put the work in now. That's what we try to do and try to expand that, as well. You can just tell the continuity is there."
(On trying to have a more vertical threat to the offense)
"It's something we've stressed in the offseason, from the time they got here in April through the plays we were running in the spring to try to push the ball down the field a little bit more. We did a bunch of it in the spring and have done a good amount of it so far here. It is a great challenge with all the blitzes, trying to hold up in protection and be in the right protection to be able to get that off – to be able to get the throw down the field. It's something we're stressing and will continue to stress."
(On if he's been surprised by anything in the first week of training camp)
"I wouldn't say surprised, per se, from schematically or from any of the players. I just know it's fun going against them, even the rookies on defense, and seeing the challenges those guys [pose] – especially on the perimeter with [Jacob] Parrish and Benjamin [Morrison] and those guys. I wouldn't say anything has been shocking to this point."
(On C Graham Barton saying that Grizzard matches their 'meathead mentality')
"I think the O-line's mentality – and it could be similar to mine – is how tough-nosed they're going to be, and we're going to win the game in the trenches. We do want to air the ball out and push it down the field, but the run game was so good to us last year. I have such a good rapport with those guys, and knowing that it starts with those guys and being able to run the ball and protect and hold up. I enjoy being around them. They're such a competitive bunch and are true pro's."
(On avoiding a 'sophomore slump' with RB Bucky Irving)
"The way that he still continues to come in here – not as early as Coach [Tom] Moore, but close – and the work that he puts in. I can't imagine his work ethic falling off. What he's been able to do so far…He's even lightyears ahead of where he was at this point [last year]. We watched a practice from essentially a year ago today that we're going to have tonight, and just the strides he's made, even from that point, are amazing. You can see the work that he puts in. You guys talk to him – he loves it and he's committed to it. It showed up, especially once we put the pads on. Because of his work ethic, we wouldn't expect to have any setbacks."
(On what he's seen from TE Devin Culp)
"He's grown tremendously. You can tell even after the season, when I got the job, the communication that we had and him coming up and watching tape and learning the system and trying to figure out exactly what we were going to do that was going to be different or the same…Then, the work he put in training. We can all see it out there – the guy can fly. He has a different speed than the vast majority of tight ends in the league. He put the work in there, and now he's seeing the fruits of that labor through [training] camp where he's had a couple of really explosive plays that you've seen. Just having that second year in the offense where there's not that anxiety of, 'What are these plays? What are these formations?' He can now play fast and [we can] try to get the ball to him as much as possible. He's off to a really good start, as well."
WIDE RECEIVER MIKE EVANS
(On the difference in the offensive scheme versus last year)
"I cannot give you that information. No, it is the same thing, so it actually has been pretty smooth this offseason and this training camp. Just adding new wrinkles here and there, but it has been smooth, and it has been good."
(On going up against CB Zyon McCollum during training camp)
"Oh yeah, that is my guy, Galveston, Texas. We are sharpening each other's games. It is crazy seeing him and his brother when they were young, and now I am competing against him, and just being his teammate now for four seasons now. He has come a long way, he is one of the best corners in the game, and it is a battle every time we go against each other."
(On potentially breaking Jerry Rice's record for most consecutive 1,000 receiving yard seasons this year)
"That is what makes it even sweeter, that people want it as bad as I do. I appreciate them for that, and I look forward to having a great season on both sides of the ball."
(On his approach entering his 12th season)
"I am getting up there in experience, obviously I am going into my 12th season. I have been the most experienced [offensive] veteran for the past couple of seasons now, since Tom [Brady] left. I feel pretty great though, but as I get older, I am just focusing on what is in front of me, and that is the season."
(On what his impressions of WR Emeka Egbuka are)
"I have seen what I expect to see from Emeka [Egbuka]. [He is] already a true professional. He is an unbelievable playmaker and is going to have a great career in this league."
(On taking WR Tez Johnson under his wing)
"That is my guy, man. With the ball in his hands, he is a crazy athlete. He catches the ball really well for a smaller, faster guy. Because a lot of smaller guys do not have the best hands, but he has really good hands. [He is] super positive, a fun guy, very down to earth. He knows a lot about the stuff I like, so we will listen to old music in [the locker room], and he knows about that."
(On how he feels looking around the Buccaneers wide receiver room)
"A lot of talent, a lot of humble guys, a lot of guys who put in the work. Like I said earlier in the offseason, this is one of the most talented -- if not the most talented -- receiver groups I have been a part of, and I look forward to doing my part this year."
(On wearing The '76 Jersey for the home opener)
"Fire. They are fire. I am excited to wear those jerseys. I missed the creamsicle last year, so I am making sure I wear them this year."
GUARD BEN BREDESON
(On the first padded practice of training camp on Monday)
"It was good to get back into it yesterday. [I'm] excited to continue with it today."
(On T Tristan Wirfs)
"Obviously – I mean, it's no secret that Tristan is the anchor of the o-line, he's a leader in the room, a captain of the team and obviously an incredible player. It sucks when guys get hurt, like you said luckily, he'll be coming back at some point. Charlie [Heck] is doing a great job and the o-line – everyone has to have that 'next man up' mentality as unfortunate as it is."
(On the benefits of having T Charlie Heck working with the team for OTAs)
"100%, we were able to get a bunch of reps with Charlie, like you said throughout the spring, throughout these early practices here at camp and moving forward. Being able to bank all those reps and get that gel and cohesion – I know that's a buzz word in the offensive line room but it's a real thing. Being able to get that and start working on it early, hopefully will pay dividends here moving."
(On the new changes to the scheme by Offensive Coordinator Josh Grizzard)
"I think 'Grizz' (Josh Grizzard) – like you said, it's a very similar offense to what we had last year. So far there are some small tweaks that you can see that he's making it his own. We are very comfortable in this offense and really enjoy the play style, we enjoy being able to run the ball and set up the pass. We're excited to keep going."
(On how important holding everyone accountable is for the team's long-term goals)
"You want a disciplined offensive unit, you want a self-policed team, self-policed offense, self-policed room where guys are holding each other accountable. We have a standard that we are upholding every single day. As long as we can keep that going and keep that standard high and, like you said, hold everyone to what we believe that we can be, it's going to be a good year."
CORNERBACK JACOB PARRISH
(On the importance of the beginning of training camp)
'I would say so far it's going pretty [well]. [I'm] trying to learn the scheme, [Head] Coach [Todd] Bowles does a lot of different things on defense so [I'm] taking it day by day. [I'm] trying to lean on the vets."
(On his confidence after causing turnovers during practice)
"I feel like I'm a very confident man – especially in my position, you're going to give up plays and you're going [to] make plays. It's always having that mentality [of] 'it's always that next play.'"
(On if he's had any teachable moments during camp)
"I would say going against Sterling Shepard, he's a [veteran] guy, very savvy guy. Anytime I go against him it's good work. [I'm] leaning on my vets, Zyon [McCollum], [Jamel] Dean and [Antoine] Winfield [Jr.], just learning what they do and trying to follow [in] their footsteps."
(On learning from WR Sterling Shepard)
"[I'm] getting really good feedback, just trying to see what he sees. Going into games I'm going to be going against older guys so [I'm] leaning towards him on those competitions."
(On potentially blitzing this season)
"I'm very excited about that. [At] Kansas State I think I only blitzed – I can't even count how many times I blitzed to be honest. When I got here, I've been blitzing a lot. I feel like I [have] good speed, a good intensity to get the quarterback. I'm excited for that."
