TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 9-27-23

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On if there's an update to the status of cornerbacks Carlton Davis III and Jamel Dean)

"Jamel may be iffy – we'll see how he's feeling at the end of the week. Carlton says he's feeling better. Until I see him run, I'll decline to comment on it."

(On if Davis III and Dean are in play for this weekend's game)

"Right now, everybody is in play."

(On how DL Calijah Kancey is progressing)

"He's coming along [well]."

(On if Kancey could play this weekend)

"I'll see towards [the end of the week]. I don't know that for sure."

(On WR Chris Godwin's production through three games)

"It's early in the year – it evens out, eventually. We've got guys we go to. If they're doubling Chris, we throw to Mike [Evans]. If they're doubling Mike, we throw to Chris. If they're doubling both, we've got to throw to somebody else. It's three games in – we don't worry about that right now. Chris is going to get his plays."

(On facing New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas)

"He looks back to me. He's healthy, he's catching great balls, he's running routes. He's already big and strong, but he's a smart player, as well. Any time he's out on the field, he's going to give somebody problems. He's getting back to his old self."

(On if he's preparing to face Saints QB Jameis Winston)

"It would have been the same preparing for [Derek] Carr. The offense is the offense. We're worried about [Alvin] Kamara coming back, as well. We've got to worry about Taysom [Hill]. They've got three good receivers and they've got a couple good tight ends. We've got to worry about everybody. We're not concentrating on Jameis, per se, we're working on the team."

(On his takeaways from last year's Week 2 matchup against the Saints)

"The biggest thing was the turnovers – that's what kind of decides games like that. It was a tough game both times. They got ahead, it was a tie game in the second game and we came back and won it. We got some turnovers in the first one. When they win the turnover battle, they usually win the ballgame. When we win the turnover battle, usually we come out on top. That'll be something to watch."

(On WR Mike Evans' production despite acclimating to a new offense)

"He's a great receiver. It doesn't matter the scheme, the offense, the coordinator or the people. He's going to do what he always does. Mike is a competitor, he loves to play the game, he's a very smart player, he's a very tough player and he performs well. It shows in his practice ability."

(On what was 'clicking' on the team's scoring touchdown drive in Week 3)

"We were able to execute, which was inconsistent the whole game – we know that, we've got to be better all the way around. We were able to execute and get a drive going and they made some plays."

(On the matchup between WR Mike Evans and Saints CB Marshon Lattimore)

"Any time you've got two great players and they want to compete – both want to win – as long as they play within the whistle, that's fine. We don't want to hurt our team, I'm sure they don't want to hurt their team. It's going to be a competitive ballgame. Just keep it in between the whistles."

(On if he's decided on team captains yet)

"Not at this time. We switch up every time."

(On Saints RB Alvin Kamara returning this week)

"He's tough. He's one of the toughest backs in the league. He can run it and he can catch it, he can slash, he can play receiver, he can do a lot of things. He can run up the middle, he can run outside. It's going to be a chore because he's the most athletic of all the running backs they have. He presents a problem."

(On playing in a hostile environment for the second time this season)

"This won't be our first rodeo down in that stadium. They have great fans and they have a great atmosphere to play ball in, so it gets everybody excited. We'll be ready to play."

(On if he's pleased with the production from the tight end position)

"Week 3, you're not going to be satisfied with anything. It's a work in progress right now. I trust those guys – those guys, for the most part, played in games last year obviously other than [David] Wells. Those guys do a good job with what they do. As the season unfolds, their productivity will go up."

(On how he thought the team has responded to the loss)

"Twenty four-hour rule. We get ready for the next one. The good thing about losing Monday is you turn right back around and get back to work and get ready for the next game. You don't have time to think about it."

(On how difficult it is for him and Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales to remain committed to the run)

"As coordinators, you always look and see what you can do better first, as coaches. Then we try to look and see if the scheme was working or if we need to tweak or do certain things. Again, this is Dave's first time calling it, too. After three games, he's not going to be Mike Martz. He's going to be good in his own way, but don't expect him to come out here and have 'The Greatest Show on Turf.' He's a good coordinator, he's very smart, he understands where his help is. They're going to get better every week and we're good with that."

(On if there's value in continuing to run the ball despite struggling at it)

"As long as it's not a blowout, yes, [there] is value in it. If you get behind, you've got to throw the ball, obviously. But the value in the carries [is] it takes time off the clock, it gives the defense a rest, hopefully it wears the other team down some to where you can do some play action things [and] things necessary like that. It doesn't necessarily go in the big runs, it's almost like time of possession, the wear-down process and the heat in Tampa, giving the defense a rest – it's all inclusive. You want to be better in the run game, you want to break some runs. It's Week 3, you want [to win] a game any way possible. If we can win a game throwing the football, I'll take it; if we can win a game running the football, I'll take it."

(On how he would assess the team's run blocking thus far)

"It's still a work in progress. It's a work in progress. You can say it's up and down. The first game was tough sledding – they had extra guys up there. The second game, we got going a little bit. The third game, we faced a tough D-line. It's going to be like that every week. You've got to take what they give you. We've got to tweak some things, we've got to scheme some things. It's players and coaches together, working together, to get it right."

(On how important this week's game is)

"It's a critical game because it's the next game. We're coming off a loss, you don't want to go with two losses in a row, especially into a Bye. Whether it be the Saints or anybody else, it's a critical game for us."

(On if the team may sign a veteran defensive back)

"We're looking at it. It was a walk-through today so it's hard to tell right now. We've got to check the progress throughout the course of the week. If it doesn't look good, we may sign one."

(On if LB Devin White will be fully available on Sunday)

"We'll see how the week goes. Again, I can't comment on his injury until I see him actually running."

(On DB Dee Delaney stepping in for the injured cornerbacks last week)

"He did some good things, he had some things to work on. He made a great play – I know he's a ballhawk. He's dependable, he's reliable because he's a jack of all trades and can do a lot of things for us. We throw him into some tight spots and he delivers."

(On how much he talks with Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales on gamedays and shares his thoughts)

"He's the offensive coordinator. I'm not an offensive coordinator, guys. I'm not going to sit there and be Big Brother over Dave and be an offensive coordinator. That's not who I am, that's not what I do. I'd be crazy if I sat up here and told you I was. Do I know offenses? Yeah. Do I know defenses and how they defend? Yes, but you let the guys do their thing and coach football. We all get paid to do a job. Dave is very good at his job. I trust him completely and we let him go. If we need to talk about timeouts and going for it on fourth down and things like that, we talk about it. But, I'm not going to sit there and say, 'Run, pass, pass, run, run.' That's not football. We let him coach and we let those guys work together and they get it done."

QUARTERBACK BAKER MAYFIELD

(On the way the team has regrouped after its first loss of the season)

"Yeah, I mean you can tell, especially today, just the focus and the bounce back [mentality]. It wasn't our best game on Monday night, but we've got to move on to the next one. There are a lot of important games, and especially with this being our first divisional one. We know what is at stake here, so all of the guys are pretty focused."

(On what he learned from Monday's game)

"A lot of it I mentioned after the game. We have to start faster offensively. We have to be more aggressive. With a defense like ours, there's no reason we can't be aggressive, push the tempo and try and force the issue for a team to try and get aggressive against our guys, and let them make plays, as well. When it comes down to it, it's complementary football and offensively we have to do our job."

(On how much he can draw on his experience from facing the Saints last season in Carolina)

"It starts up front – you've got Cam Jordan and Demario Davis. In the back end, Marshon [Lattimore]. It's their veteran leadership that they have on all levels and their mentality defensively. Those guys, they are insistently physical. It doesn't matter who they're going up against, they're going to play extremely, extremely hard. They're going to present blitz packages and presentations up front that you have to be prepared for. It's a mental game preparation-wise for them, but then also it's physical when it comes down to game time."

(On what it means to be more aggressive on offense)

"Taking advantage of matchups. Going back to our first drive, I missed that shot to Deven Thompkins. Whether it comes down to actually hitting the shots or just taking the easy plays, taking the first, first down and getting into our groove. Just making sure we're not having a conservative mindset against a team like that."

(On if he sees any parallels between New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston and himself in regard to being No. 1 overall draft picks)

"I mean, I don't like comparing anybody's story because every story is a little different. But yeah, similar in the aspect of being the first pick [and] not having it exactly go as you wanted it to, but then getting opportunities to have a fresh start. I'm a fan of Jameis. He is a locker room guy. But yeah, every story is different."

(On Saints CB Marshon Lattimore and if he likes the competition between Lattimore and Buccaneers WR Mike Evans)

"Yeah, we're always going to take our guys in our one-on-one matchups. We believe in them, and they would say the same thing. That's what special about it and that's what makes this rivalry so good. It's a physical matchup, it's non-stop. It doesn't matter what's at stake. Getting to watch it from afar was fun. Now, being in the middle of it is going to be even more fun."

(On if he has gotten a feel for the magnitude of the Buccaneers-Saints rivalry)

"Yeah, I mean, you see it firsthand now being here in Tampa. You kind of watched it on TV – well I did – in the past. You get a feeling this is one of the ones everybody has circled on the calendar when the schedule gets released and I'm looking forward to it this early on being in a division game, and having the same record as them, as well."

(On getting WR Chris Godwin more involved in the offense and the difference in production between Godwin and WR Mike Evans)

"I think you look at yardage-wise, in particular, the third down play against the Bears, [Mike Evans] catches a long touchdown pass. He also catches the pass and breaks it for 70 yards. Then, in our tempo against the Vikings, we got him a look to get a post route for a touchdown. So, there are certain things that come throughout a game. It's going to be balanced, but yeah, Mike has had those shots so far. Chris has been a guy that is so valuable to us. He knows that, but he's a guy that we need to continue to get involved in the offense because good things happen when he touches the ball. He's a consistent guy, he does everything you want him to and he's there when you need him."

(On if there is anything he would like to improve upon personally in Week 4)

"Hitting the easy stuff. Like I mentioned earlier, hitting Deven Thompkins on that deep-crosser play. Taking some of those shots. And even the ball to Mike [Evans] in the end zone, it wasn't my best ball by any means. I could've made it easy on him. Just taking exactly what's there and making it easy on our guys because they're great playmakers, so there is no reason to make it harder. I think, obviously, taking care of the ball. I'd like to eliminate the interception, and then taking everything that's easy there for us."

(On if there are any attributes of WR Mike Evans that he didn't notice before playing with him)

"It's kind of him just putting on a show on Sundays. Yeah, he's great in practice and he does all of those things, but it even elevates come game time. You get to see it full speed with having a gameplan locked in throughout the week. The week of preparation and him saying what he's going to do is exactly what he does. But it's still just fun to watch when you get out there with him."

(On not losing control of emotions during a rivalry game)

"I think it comes down to playing within the whistle and never hurting your team. You can play with passion. We're never going to take anything from anybody else, we're never going to back down – that's not the type of group we are. But, also, we need to be smart. There are things that I think everybody knows – it goes without saying – just don't hurt the team. We're going to protect each other, but don't hurt the team."

(On playing in the Caesars Superdome for the first time since his rookie season)

"Yeah, that was the only time I've played there. It was my rookie year before I started playing early on. I've played in most stadiums, but yeah, it's a great atmosphere. I remember that just from our Week 2 game my rookie year. They're extremely loud so we're looking forward to that great environment and seeing how our guys handle it."

(On his positive demeanor and if it's due to the short week or knowing it's a long season and that there were some positives despite the loss)

"It's a combination of all of those things. It's a short week, so yeah, you've got to move forward. I think the biggest thing… my attitude is there are a lot of things that we can control. The Eagles are a great team, and they made a lot of great plays – I'm not taking anything away from them – but there are a lot of things that we can control to get better. When you look at it on tape, we can fix those things. It's in our control. It's in our hands. That's why everybody needs to be positive – the world is not ending for us."

(On what it would mean to head into the Bye Week with a 3-1 record)

"Before the extra game in the season, you split it up into the four quarters with four games. So, for us, going into this Bye Week with a 3-1 record would be tremendous. Obviously, we would've liked to be 4-0, but it's on to the next one. Three and one is the best we can do so we need to have our eyes set on that."

(On if this is an important game in terms of winning the NFC South division)

"Yeah, I mean every game for us mindset-wise is a must win. Now, this early in the season, you're not losing sleep over it, but it's an important one for us. Every game is important for us, but especially the division ones and especially this rivalry, so I can't say enough about it."

WIDE RECEIVER CHRIS GODWIN

(On what he has been seeing from WR Mike Evans)

"I feel like whenever he goes out there, he's trying to take advantage of the opportunities. He always has the ability to go deep and make these big splash plays. Those opportunities have presented themselves so far this season, he has taken advantage of a lot of them, and we don't expect anything different from him moving forward. Like I said, he's a consummate pro. When he goes out there you expect Mike to be Mike, and it's on the other team to do something to stop it."

(On what it's like playing Saints man coverage)

"It's always fun whenever you get to go against a team that wants to play man coverage. Like I said it's man to man. You know, it's like may the best man win. Typically, whenever you have two really good teams, you're going to be trading blows. At the end, it's whoever capitalized at the end of the game. It's always a fun time whenever we get to play the Saints. You go into that stadium, and you know what you're getting into. You know those fans have the stadium rocking, and there's no windows in there. It's like you go in and they lock the doors behind you, like it's just you and your guys, you're going to battle, and you're like let's figure it out."

(On how the Philadelphia Eagles defense prepared him for the New Orleans Saints defense)

"I guess, you take it one week at a time. The league is full of talented guys. Every week you're going against someone who is a Pro Bowler or an All-Pro and it's literally everywhere. There is talent across the league, and that's probably one of the better things, in my opinion, playing in this day and age, [and that] is the skill level is spread across the league so well, like there is a lot of parity. It makes it really interesting every time you get ready to go up and get ready to go up against the next team. Like you said, last week we played a team that had a couple of All-Pros in the defensive back field, they had studs up front, and they make it really challenging. That just shows us that we need to be on our P's and Q's this week, because it's the same thing, you know, All-Pros in the back end, some really great guys up front, [and] some really experienced linebackers. I think [Eagles LB] Demario [Davis] is probably one of the better ones in the league, so it's going to be a challenge for us. We just need to be ready for it."
