Jeff Kastl enters his fourth season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025 and his first as the assistant tight ends coach.
In his final season as the season leading offensive quality control efforts in 2024, Kastl assisted one of the NFL's most efficient offenses. Tampa Bay's offense established a number of single-season franchise records, including: completion percentage (71.5%), passer rating (106.8), yards per rush (5.3), rushing yards (2,536) and third-down conversion rate (50.9%). Kastl contributed to a complete overhaul of the team's rushing attack, improving the NFL's 32nd-ranked rush offense in 2022 and 2023 to a ground game that finished third in yards per rush and fourth in rush yards per game in 2024. The Buccaneers became the first team in NFL history to complete 70% of their passes and average over 5.0 yards per carry throughout an entire season, in addition to becoming just the second team in league history with 40+ passing touchdowns and 5.0+ yards per rush in a single season. Tampa Bay's 2024 offense was 1-of-3 across the league to throw for 4,000+ yards and rush for 2,000+ yards this season, alongside the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions.
Easing the transition with a new offensive coordinator and a new quarterback in 2023, Kastl assisted a staff that guided Baker Mayfield to career highs in completions (364), completion percentage (64.3%), passing yards (4,044) and passing touchdowns (28). Mayfield finished top 10 in the league in passing yards, passing touchdowns and touchdown-to-interception ratio (2.8). As a group, Tampa Bay's offense ranked second in 2023 in fourth-down conversion percentage (66.7%) and 10th in third-down conversion percentage (41.5%).
In Kastl's first season in charge of offense quality control efforts for the Buccaneers in 2022, Tampa Bay led the league with the fewest number of sacks allowed (22.0), ranked third in lowest interception rate per pass attempt (1.3 percent), seventh in fourth down conversion rate (55.6 percent) and tied ninth for fewest fumbles (17). Additionally, the Buccaneers offense led the league in total receptions (499), ranked second in passing yards per game (269.8), and third in total passing first downs (240).
Kastl comes to Tampa Bay as offensive quality control coach following two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Indiana State University (2020-21). He previously spent four seasons at the University of Texas-San Antonio where he began his career as the wide receivers coach in 2016, prior to adding pass game coordinator duties in 2018, and later being promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2019. His receivers broke 10 school records during his three seasons mentoring the position group.
A former University of Michigan quarterback (2002-06), Kastl spent four seasons coaching in the Power Five conferences, working as an offensive assistant at LSU (2015), defensive analyst at his alma mater (2013-14), and as a graduate assistant at Auburn in 2012. Following a pair of Big Ten titles during his playing career at Michigan (2002-06), Kastl began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan (2007-08) before spending three years at Ashland University (2009-11).
A native of Clinton Township, Michigan, Kastl graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in sports management and communications, as well as a master's degree in sports management. He and his wife, Kate, have three daughters, Maeve, Hannah and Murphy.
