1986 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Season | Team History & Highlights
The Buccaneers' second and final season under Head Coach Leeman Bennett produced another 2-14 record, with the team losing by an average margin of more than two touchdowns per game. Steve DeBerg began the season as the starting quarterback but gave way to Steve Young after two games, with the Bucs beating Detroit in Young's first start but winning just once more the rest of the way. Trouble began even before the games were played as the Auburn running back Bo Jackson refused to join the team after being taken first overall in the 1986 draft. Offensive stalwarts Jimmie Giles and Kevin House were released in October and defensive star Hugh Green was traded to Miami during the offseason amid a long series of moves overhauling the roster. The 473 points allowed by the defense were the most in a single season in NFL history at the time.
