TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 9-21-23

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On Philadelphia's defensive front and the threat they pose)

"It's early, but I watched them last year and I watched them a couple games this year – they're tough, they're talented, they're fast, they're strong. They've got two groups of them – it's not just the starting four. They've got backups that can play and they're all first-rate players. It's going to be a challenge for us on the O-line."

(On Philadelphia's two new coordinators and if they've tweaked much)

"It's early. They've tweaked some things – obviously, you want to tweak some things every year. Both are very good coaches. I liked [Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Coordinator] Brian [Johnson] myself, when I could get a chance to at least talk to him. The other one, the [defensive coordinator Sean Desai] has been great for a while now. They're playing good football – playing good ball."

(On trying to stop their rushing attack)

"It's tough. They've got a heck of an offensive line, they've got three backs that can go get it, they've got two All-Pro receivers and the tight end. The quarterback is playing outstanding football. We've got to be disciplined, we've got to play our assignments. They can hurt you in a bunch of ways. They kind of take what you give them. If you try to load up for the run, they throw it; if you try to stop the pass, they run it. It's going to be a good challenge for us."

(On if it helps to play a mobile quarterback in two consecutive weeks)

"Not really, [Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields and Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts] are different types of runners, so to speak. Jalen has great 'escapability.' Other than his athleticism, he has great 'escapability' in the pocket. Justin did, too – they just saw things differently, schematically. Jalen does a heck of a job knowing when to run and when to throw."

(On if playing against Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields helps to prepare for going up against Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts)

"I don't know if it helps you practice it. It helps you if you can bottle them up and not let them out. This is another athletic guy that can throw the football, it's just a matter of us being disciplined and everybody doing their job."

(On if Monday night's matchup is a good litmus test for his team)

"We look at every week like that. The fact that we're 2-0 and went to the Super Bowl doesn't bother us. We're trying to go 3-0. There's going to be challenges every week for us – they're going to be bigger as the weeks go on. We're looking to get better as a team, no matter who we're playing. We're trying to execute and do our job. [With Philadelphia], this is not the end of the world if we lost or if we won. We're trying to win it. They have very good players – everyone we play will have very good players – they probably have more than most. It'll be a good test for our guys."

(On QB Baker Mayfield's play on third downs this season and how important that is for this offense)

"I think if we get in third-and-manageable – I know he's got some third-and-longs – if we can get in third-and-manageable, that gives us a good chance to succeed. We've been running it [well] enough to get in third-and-manageable positions so we're going to try and continue that."

(On Philadelphia's success and the quarterback sneak and how to stop it)

"If I knew the answer to that, I'd probably be writing a book. They're like 98% on it. You know it's coming, they know they're giving it to you and they get great push – they've got an athletic quarterback, they've got a big line, and I don't think anybody has stopped it yet. We'll try like everybody else and see which side of the fence we fall on."

(On if the way Philadelphia accomplishes the quarterback sneak should be looked at by the league)

"I don't make the rules, I'm not the commissioner or anybody else. We've got to stop it. The play is legal – we've got to stop it as a defense. They do a good job of executing it as an offense."

(On if CB Carlton Davis III might play on Monday)

"We'll see how he does – if he can get into practice. He was limited today. He was moving around better. We'll monitor it during the week."

(On what's been most pleasing about the team's performance through two weeks)

"I think the biggest thing for us is we're playing as a team. The chemistry is good on both sides of the ball, as well as playing off of each other, as well as special teams. The chemistry is good. We have things to correct, for sure. The trick is, in this league, is to win while you're getting good and correcting the mistakes. That's been positive with all the guys. They know we're not perfect, they know we haven't peaked yet, but they're working at it. The chemistry that they're working together at has been the most pleasing thing."

(On if he's been surprised by P Jake Camarda play and his athleticism)

"He's a lot better athlete than I thought he was. From a kicking standpoint, he's kind of what we thought he was when we got him. He had a big leg in college, he has a big leg in the NFL. He can kick off and get in the endzone, he can punt it directionally to the sideline and still get some distance on it. That's kind of what we were expecting."

(On NT Vita Vea taking his play to another level this year)

"I think with the other guys – with [Calijah] Kancey and Logan [Hall] and us getting a little quicker down there, he's no longer the quickest D-lineman anymore. I think he takes that personally. His quickness factor has exceeded what we thought it would be. He's really getting in the backfield quicker and we really like that about him – and [he's] using his hands more."

(On if he knows the former Georgia Bulldogs on the Eagles roster well considering his son plays football at the University of Georgia)

"No, I don't know them any better. My son just got there in June. These guys have been there. I haven't really met those guys other than through the draft process. I'm not really that familiar with them, personally."

(On if he feels like the team has embraced the idea of winning the turnover battle)

"I think we understand it. That's what we're trying to do. We're trying to make plays at the same time, we're not trying to be conservative. But we've got to take care of the football and we're definitely trying to take it away on the other side. When you look up at the end of the game and we're plus-two or plus-three, hopefully that [converts] into wins and so far it has."

QUARTERBACK BAKER MAYFIELD

(On if things have come together quicker than he anticipated as he joins a new team)

"Yes and no. I think there's definitely bumps in the road as the learning curve goes when you put in a new offense, but like I said earlier, we installed this in the beginning of camp. We had pretty much everybody there the whole time, so everybody has been on the same page. Now, it's just about how guys react when the games get going. We haven't been perfect by any means but we've definitely played well and I've taken care of the ball to put us in position to win games."

(On his success on third downs so far this season)

"You talk about third downs – obviously you want to get past the third-down marker – but [you want to give] your guys a chance to catch the ball in space and make tackles. We've had a few of those where they catch it short and they make plays to get the first down. Just giving guys the opportunity, like I've mentioned before. We have a great skill group – really talented guys. My job is to distribute the ball to those guys and let them do all the work. So, taking what's there. A lot of those times, yeah we might have a good play dialed up, but they cover it well so just check it down and see good things happen."

(On his ability to keep plays alive and going up against the Eagles' pass rush)

"Their front seven – they're a special defense, they have been for the last few years for a reason. It's those guys. Obviously, it starts with the interior guys. They've got great edge rushers who had tremendous years last year. We're aware of that, we're going to be ready for it. They get paid, too. They're going to have good plays, we're going to have bad plays. You've just got to adjust and go off that. It's about handling the little bumps in the road throughout the game and making sure we get the last punch."

(On what stands out about the Eagles secondary)

"New defensive coordinator this year, so just a little bit of coverage structure change from the last couple of years. Their corners are extremely smart, obviously Darius Slay is a tremendous player – extremely talented and experienced. I think when it comes to secondary, you can tell that he's coaching those guys to pattern read and jump routes and do certain things to elevate that game in the back end. They're experienced – yeah, they have some young guys that are playing a little bit right now but you can tell that the guys that have been around are definitely coaching them up."

(On developing chemistry with wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin)

"Just during the week, being on the same page – talking about every single possible look we can get and how they're going to run routes and recognizing how they are at the top of the routes, how they're cutting in and out of breaks. Like I said, being on the same page goes a long way."

(On how much he's looking forward to Monday Night Football)

"It should be a tremendous atmosphere. Obviously, the first primetime game for us as a team, going up against a great opponent. [We are] a couple of teams that have a lot to prove within our division and in our conference as well, so it's a great NFC matchup. Obviously, it's a special night, to recognize Rondé [Barber], as well, in the stadium. The atmosphere should be tremendous, especially with the history with him and the Eagles, as well."

(On if this week's matchup is a litmus test)

"You try and do that every week, but especially against a good team like this. The good thing about the NFL season is you've got 17 games to prove [yourself] and you want to peak at the right time. This is one we're looking forward to and we definitely need to show our best stuff."

(On if the red zone is a point of emphasis in practice this week)

"Absolutely – taking what's there. I think we both have the vision of throwing touchdowns here and there, but taking what's there. Kind of like our third down thought process of accepting what the defense is giving us because we are good enough to be able to score down there, we just have to execute. There were a few fundamental things that I need to get better at down there in the red zone and just everybody in general needs to be more detailed to where we can finish in the end zone instead of field goals."

(On if he knows Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts at all considering he went to Oklahoma)

"I had my hands full [when Hurts was at Oklahoma]. Just talking to Lincoln [Riley], seeing how they were doing, I've always had the relationship with Coach Riley, so just checking in and seeing how they were doing. He's a tremendous leader, I think you guys have seen. His play speaks for itself, but his work ethic is extremely important to him and you can see that resonate with the whole team. Every team he's been on, he's never changed. That's the special thing about him."

(On if he has added pressure on third down because of how much the Buccaneers run the ball)

"I think for us, we've been really good on the third-and-shorts. The third-and-mediums, we need some improvement. Third-and-longs, we've actually been pretty decent. It's just about getting in that manageable area – not having the extremities and just capitalizing on those. For me, it's not about being perfect. Like I keep mentioning, taking what's there, not trying to force anything. I've mentioned it before, our defense is playing extremely well. Just making sure we end with the ball in our hands – if not, then we're punting it to them. Just giving ourselves a chance to stay out of the chains, as well."

(On if the team has embraced winning the turnover battle)

"I'm not an analytical guy by any means, but the percentages show if you take care of the ball, your chances of winning are extremely high. It's been a point of emphasis since the offseason. It's all about the ball – every meeting started with that. Keys to victory: it's all about the ball – offense, defense, special teams. How can we improve on offense? That's taking care of the ball and making sure we do our part in that. But yeah, it's extremely important, especially in a primetime game like this where you're going up against a great team – it's even more important."

(On if he likes Monday Night Football)

"Yeah, I think it's one of those things, growing up as a football fan, there's nothing like it. [If] you get a Monday night game, it's really special. The only thing about it is you've got to wait around all day to do it."

(On if he was a fan of Rondé Barber and what he means to him)

"My first time getting to meet him was this summer. [He is] a tremendous guy. I think mentality wise, the attitude and effort he had – I obviously learned a lot more last night with the documentary – but the work ethic, the scrappy player that he is, never taking no for an answer and always trying to prove himself, I think I can relate to that on a lot of levels. But [I have] a tremendous amount of respect for the guy and that was a great event last night they had for him."

(On if he has any gameday routines or superstitions)

"Yeah, I've got a few songs I always listen to in certain orders. Just little things. Nothing that the world is going to end if I don't do it."

(On TE Cade Otton saying he doesn't understand why people are underestimating the team and if people are starting to respect the Buccaneers now)

"I'm surprised Cade even talked. It's like we talked about – that's been the narrative, but we've known the whole time what we have in this locker room and the team that we're trying to build, where we're trying to head. That's the important part. The important part now is not letting the outside noise affect us in the building, as well. We didn't let it affect us before, why let it do it now?"

SAFETY CHRISTIAN IZIEN

(On if he is excited about playing against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night)

"Definitely, you always want to play against the best team from the last year or the guys with the big names. These are the games that matter [the] most, and I can't wait to play a big one."

(On Eagles QB Jalen Hurts)

"He's a dynamic player with the ball in his hands in and outside the pocket. We have plans, ways to try to confuse him, and things to do. It's going to be a good challenge."

(On when he had that, 'I belong here' moment)

"I would probably say it [was] the first practice we had in the bubble, and I was taking my first team reps with the one's. I think I had a pass breakup in a man coverage versus Chris Godwin, and it was one's of those moments [where] I am playing against guys I have watched my whole life and competing against them. It was probably then."

(On if the Buccaneers defensive system fits him and contributed to his success)

"Definitely, I would say [Head Coach Todd] Bowles is doing a really great job with putting me in different positions and schemes to confuse the quarterback. Him knowing my athletic ability, what I can do, and what I'm capable of has put me in [a] great position to make plays."

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK JAKE CAMARDA

(On earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors)

"It's not a me thing – that's a team thing. I'm not able to punt the football if we don't have all of those guys blocking for me or if Zach [Triner] doesn't get me the ball. And we can't cover if we don't have those guys down there, those gunners getting down there. Those guys do a heck of a job. I love to see them play, honestly. My name might be attached to it, but that's not me that's really winning that award, it's a collective group kind of deal."

(On his awareness recovering the blocked field goal in Week 2)

"I kind of heard the thud of it hitting. You hear the thud of the kicker's foot hitting the ball and then sadly we heard another thud, so after that, I kind of just saw it go past me and thought, 'I should probably go get that or do something, otherwise they might be able to score.' Just trying to think as quickly as possible in that type of situation and do whatever we need to do."

(On seeing a number of his former Georgia Bulldogs teammates in Week 3 when facing the Eagles)

"Yeah, I love all of those guys. I played with all of them for a long time. I got to school with a lot of them. We shared a lot of memories, so it's going to be a lot of fun to see those guys. I'm super excited. I love all of them to death, so it's going to be cool."
