Appeared in 47 career games, making 23 starts, across four seasons (2021–24) at the University of Nebraska, totaling 126 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, eight passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one interception (returned for a touchdown).
Originally joined the Nebraska football team as a walk-on player before earning a scholarship prior to his senior season.
Was named honorable mention All-Big Ten as a senior in 2024 after starting all 13 games and registering a career-high 70 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one interception returned for a touchdown.
During his junior season in 2023, started 10-of-12 contests and totaled 50 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two passes defensed, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble.
Between his freshman and sophomore seasons (2021-22), saw action in 22 games and compiled six tackles.

Is the son of John Sr. and Lisa Bullock.
Has one younger brother, Alex, who played wide receiver at Nebraska. In 2023, John and Alex became the first pair of brothers to start on opposite sides of the ball for Nebraska since 1987.
