Head Coach Bruce Arians

(On the first practice of training camp)

"I was really pleased. I thought it was great intensity. A lot of speed on the field [from] both sides. The ebb and flow of practice was pretty good. Defense won some. Offense won some. So, it was a very, very good start and hopefully we come back and stack a couple of these type of practices together."

(On QB Jameis Winston's performance in practice)

"I thought he was fantastic. All the things that we're throwing at him today and the different coverages Todd [Bowles] put in. I thought his red zone was really good. He threw a 50-50 ball to Mike [Evans] that wasn't a very good 50-50 ball. I don't mind him throwing those to Mike. Mike's going to come down with his share, but just make it a little bit closer. I liked the thought process of it."

(On what he is looking to see from players on the first day of training camp)

"The first thing was how good of shape they're in. They're in great shape. Then, how much retention of the spring? Are we starting over? That was a big emphasis. We can't come back here and start over. The sheet will show – you'll hear me talking about the sheet [for a] busted assignment or penalty – it will show how much we have. I didn't see very many, so I was very pleased with it."

(On the amount of players he lined up at left tackle)

"We had a couple of cramps, and we're going to swing guys anyway. Guys have to play both sides, inside and outside. Donovan [Smith] had a little bit of a cramp issue near the end."

(On the defensive back group's performance)

"I have to judge the tape. I can't see them [very] good. I was on the other side of the ball. We had our hands on some balls. I liked that part of it."

(On whether it is an advantage to enter training camp with a new team)

"It's an advantage, I think. We know each other now. They know what to expect. We got a ton of reps with two practices going on at the same time. We'll do it again tomorrow so those young guys can get on film. I can't ask for any more of this team as far as working. They're working really hard. [They will] work smarter and smarter every day."

(On what he can see from the running backs)

"You can see vision. There were some guys that made some great jump-cuts and found some holes today. Would they have been there in pads? I don't know, but they saw it and popped out of it. They looked really good. Their pass protection was solid. It's tough to talk about the running game without pads. We'll find out Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday."

(On if you can win consistently with a sub-standard running game)

"We won't have a sub-standard running game. We'll have a damn good one. Like I said, I like our backs. They're the type of backs I like and we're going to block and we're going to commit to the running game, so we'll have a good running game."

(On Winston's decision on a play to check the ball down)

"It was a screen play and the [defensive] end's coming free. He made a nice underhand toss. [He] sucked the end into him, so he made a great play, and it's not easy to get that ball to that running back. We struggled with that in the spring, so it was a nice step forward on that play."

(On how pleased he was with Winston after seven weeks off)

"If I'll say anything, he overworked. He was throwing a little bit too much. We had to calm him down. They went up to Florida State and a bunch of guys were throwing. I think they might've thrown a little bit too much and I told him to slow down his pitch count until we got started."

(On K Cairo Santos getting the first reps at kicker)

"The vet always gets it. Matt [Gay] will get his shot tomorrow."

(On Santos' performance)

"He [made kicks] all the way to the 55-yarder. That was close."

(On if he sees ILB Devin White as an every-down linebacker)

"Oh yeah, he is not coming off the field. He is an excellent blitzer and he can cover, so yeah, he is never coming off the field."

(On QB Blaine Gabbert's performance on the first day of training camp)

"I thought he had a heck of a day. He had some nice deep balls and he knows the offense. He knows when to go to his check-downs and knows when to take his shots. This is his ninth offense and only the second time he has been in the same one. The guy can really play. It's a shame that early in his career he had three offensive coordinators in his first three years. I like the guy – he can play."

(On if he liked seeing the defense getting hands on the ball throughout practice)

"I do, I like that. That half-line drill is a little bit tiered their way, but yeah, I like the fact that we are getting hands on balls. There were a couple of tips I would like to see us come down with too."

(On moving practice from outside to inside)

"The sport-science guys have this thing regulated now to where it is the same as if we were outside. We just lost being on grass – that is the biggest thing."

(On what he has seen out of OLB Noah Spence)

"He has a high, high motor and he is getting to the quarterback a lot. So, let's see that in the pads. I think what we are doing with him fits and he is a high motor guy. I do want to see him stop the run a little bit because he is always rushing the passer."

(On setting the tempo for camp)

"They know the tempo. We came out here in the spring and we established our work ethic and the tempo of practice. We were scheduled to go until 6:30 [p.m.] and we got all of the reps in I don't know how many minutes early. That is usually the sign of a good, fast practice."

(On what he has seen out of TE Cameron Brate)

"He is healthy. He looks good. Again, we will see him in pads but we know he can catch the football. He made some nice catches down there in the red zone and that's been his forte, so we just want to keep building on that."

(On his impressions of S Jordan Whitehead)

"He has been flying around. I know he is physical, and he put a [couple] pounds on, so I know he is going to throw his face in the fan. We've just got to beef him up a little bit and keep him healthy."
