TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 10-24-22

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On alternating between OL Luke Goedeke and Nick Leverett at left guard)

"Well, [they are] both very physical. Both were neck-and-neck going into training camp, going into the season. Obviously, Luke won it out. Leverett's won some playing time so we started getting him some in there. Luke was nicked up a little bit as well, so we got Leverett a little more time. They both fought hard and played hard, and we've just got to get better."

(On who will start at left guard on Thursday night)

"If Luke's injury is fine he'll start, but Leverett will play."

(On if rookie RB Rachaad White should have an increased role and maybe even be the starter)

"He's not running back one, but he should get some more plays. We've always talked about every week. He does some good things when the ball's in his hands, he does some good things when he's out there. Obviously, Leonard [Fournette] is a great running back as well, so we've got to find a happy medium and have both of them touch the ball."

(On if he's concerned that alternating players at left guard could hurt the continuity of the offensive line)

"Not at this time, you know. Not at this time. We're trying some things that we think will work for us, and I don't think it will [cause problems]."

(On the defense playing well for much of the game before struggling later in the second half in recent weeks)

"No, they have to play four quarters. It's really a focus thing, and there are things that we've done every day all day. And I can't explain why at this time but the things that happened yesterday in the fourth quarter and the second half especially, the three busts we had that really cost us some things were inexcusable and are some things we put in day one since we've been here. So, it wasn't something that had to be taught or re-coached or re-taught. We've just got to focus and we've got to learn how to have a killer instinct and finish three quarters."

(On if he saw the players on defense try to do too much when the offense isn't scoring)

"No, I didn't. It's a team game. We don't pit offense against defense regardless of what we do, whether the offense is playing well and the defense isn't or vice versa. We win as a team, we lose as a team. We could have done some things defensively to help us win, we could have done some things offensively to help us win."

(On the injury status of S Antoine Winfield Jr. and WR Russell Gage)

"Winfield has a concussion, so he'll be in the protocol, likely will be out. The other one is coming around, we'll see. Russell's got to get his MRI back, so we'll see what happens there."

(On why the offense is having trouble on third down)

"I don't think it has been well on third down the past few weeks. It's something we work on all the time, execution-wise. You can say some false starts, you can say some lack of route progressions, you can say some all of the above. It's everybody-inclusive. We have got to find ways to get better at that and I know we are. I'm looking for ways and I know we're trying to find those ways, but we've got to get solutions and we've got to get them fast. There's nobody coming in here to help us and save the day. We built this and we own it and we have to get us out of it."

(On Tampa Bay's scoring total dropping in three straight games)

"[We're] shooting ourselves in the foot. Our objective is to score more points than the other team. When we don't do that and we lose ballgames, it's critical. It's critical from that standpoint. We are trying to get this thing going. We will get this thing going – I believe that, and they believe that as well. We own what we have; we built it. Like I said, nobody's coming here to save us. Nobody's feeling sorry for us, neither are we feeling sorry for ourselves. We understand what we have to do going forward and we're down in the pit and we're going to start digging."

(On if it's possible to make significant changes in such a short week before the Thursday game)

"No, it's something we've been incorporating for quite some time now. It's not just after the game. It probably was said after the game but at the same time we've been working on it before that. With the Thursday game you can't change too much but we can tweak some things."

(On the biggest challenge of a short week)

"Just playing a team you're not used to playing and getting a different game plan together, when they do different things. That part of it I guess is for everybody on a Thursday night that plays, so it's something we knew that was on the scheduled and we prepared for it."

(On if this is a good time or a bad time to have to play on a short week)

"Mentally we're fine. We want to get back out there and get the sour taste out of our mouth. We can't wait to play again, but at the same time there's steps to playing a game on Thursday and today is only Monday. So, we've got to take those steps and get ready for Thursday."

(On if CB Carlton Davis III was held out of Sunday's game with the idea that he could return this week)

"No, we've got to see what he does this week. He came out Friday and did some things and didn't feel well, so that kind of set him back. We just want to see how far he is this week."

(On three straight games without a turnover forced and if that starts with lack of pressure)

"It doesn't start with lack of pressure. It starts with punching the ball out, it starts with making plays on the ball down the field. Pressure helps it, but it has nothing to do with pressure – you've got to get turnovers regardless, whether we rush four, five, six or three. And we try to get turnovers, we practice it, we punch the ball out, we show clips of it. And [turnovers] come in bunches so hopefully this will be the end of it and we can get some more."

(On OLB Shaquil Barrett's lack of production)

"I don't think he's had a chance to rush a passer, so to speak. We can get better at rushing the passer on the edge, him and Joe [Tryon-Shoyinka] can both get better there. And we're trying to contain more quarterbacks than we're trying to rush. I think they've got to pin their ears back and rush. His effort is fine, we've just got to get better results."

(On what sort of challenge Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson presents)

"He brings a huge challenge for us because he's probably the best runner, not just quarterback runner but one of the best runners in the league. Very smart, can throw the ball down the field, strong arm, very elusive. Even if you blitz him you're not going to catch him, so we've got to have some different ways of trying to play him. A lot of people have tried, a lot of people have failed. He's a winner, he comes out to compete every week and plays every week, plays smart. I like watching him play when we're not playing him, but we've got to come out and play our game and just try to make sure he doesn't kill us out of the pocket. We can't stop him, we've got to slow him down enough to where we can make some plays."

(On if QB Tom Brady needs to be more aggressive even if it risks more turnovers)

"That comes as an offense. That comes as an offense as far as not just him making plays [but] everyone else. We've got to call it right, we've got to block it right, we've got to get downfield and we've got to get open. There's a lot of variables that go into that right there, and every time it's something different, so it's just not Tom's fault. We commend him for not throwing picks but we need more big plays on offense, more consistent plays from everybody."

PASS GAME COORDINATOR/INSIDE LINEBACKERS COACH LARRY FOOTE

(On the difficulties of having a short week to prepare)

"I looked at it – the next couple of days, we're going to walkthrough, so I think that will help us. It's going to be a lot slower, we can teach a different run game – we're not used to playing a quarterback that dynamic and he's involved in the run game. I think it's going to help us out as far as it [being] slower and we can do a lot more teaching. But If I had it my way, I would love a full week – but the slow [pace] and teaching the process are going to help us."

(On Tampa Bay's defense hitting a wall in the second half over the last two weeks)

"It's 60 minutes – we've got to finish, we've got to sustain it, we've got to stay locked in the game and focused each play. Young guys are learning the ropes – each play, every play counts. I look at it [as] there's always four to five plays that really dictate the outcome of the game, and some of these young guys are learning that."

(On the lack of takeaways over the last few weeks)

"We had a few opportunities. Up front, we've got to get them into third-and-long where the quarterbacks want to hold the ball and try to push it downfield so we can get sacks. [We need to] pick the ball off, of course. We had a couple of opportunities – not a lot – but we've got to get the ball out. We know in this league – if you're creating turnovers, the chance of you winning goes up."

(On CB Zyon McCollum's first career start and third career game)

"[He had] a couple rookie moments. He had a couple rookie moments. I shared a little story with him: my rookie year the older guys wanted me off the field – it comes with it. I really challenged him – how are you going to respond this week? Just growing pains as a rookie – you can't get around it. He's got to keep his confidence and come back fighting."

(On LB Devin White's performance over the last few weeks)

"[There were] a couple of plays that were highlighted. Anytime you're tackling, you've got to get the guy on the ground. You win or lose in this game by missed assignments and tackling, so you've got to tackle. [There was] just a couple of plays – he did a lot of great things for us, but he gave up some plays and got highlighted. But he's locked in and loaded and he's moving in the right direction."

(On OLB Shaquil Barrett's lack of production)

"Well, on the first touchdown, he beat the guy clean but the ball was gone. I look at those guys – are they winning? He's definitely winning, but if the ball is gone [then] the ball is gone. You've got to keep hunting. Those numbers [from] those guys at that talent [level] – at the end of the year [they will] be right where you need them. Sacks are up and down – [if] the quarterback throws the ball, there's nothing you can do. He's just got to keep playing hard and putting pressure on the quarterback. He's getting chipped, also. Offensive coordinators can take good pass rushers out [of the game] and it's a challenge to everybody else to step up their game."

(On how the team is feeling after back-to-back losses)

"Being in this league 20 years, I don't pay attention to who got traded [or] who's playing. I know firsthand, if you're on an NFL roster, you can win any week. I learned that. Some young guys are probably learning what you just asked me, but you can lose to anybody – I don't care who's playing – hall of famer or not a hall of famer, you've got to come in and be into the details and you've got to be ready to play. It's hard to win in this game, in this league. It [doesn't] matter who's out there playing – we've got millions of dollars in the scouting department. They get the best of the best – if you're on an NFL roster, you can play."

(On if the team's younger plays have taken opponents lightly)

"No, not at all. Guys are just being out-executed. There [are] little details – guys have definitely got to play better [and] coaches have got to coach better. Adversity is here – no matter what, we've got to respond to it. I keep mentioning the young guys because they keep learning on the job, but you can lose – you've got to be into it, you've got to win the day every day. It's a game of inches – that's why it's the number one sport in the world, because of how competitive it is."

(On if the defense is trying to do too much to compensate for the offense)

"When you lose – I like to look at it [as] everybody is not doing a good job, coaches included. Everybody can play better. In football, it can be one guy here or one guy there. We're 3-4 right now, we're playing Thursday night and we've got to get a [win]. No matter what it takes – if a team has one win or no wins, you've got to get one more point than your opponent. Keep growing, keep teaching – the intensity has got to come up, has got to step up. Adversity is here, so we've got to respond."

(On if there's another player like Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson)

"No. Not at all."

(On what else makes Jackson dangerous, outside of his running ability)

"He's starting to throw the ball better from the pocket and stuff. He's got more weapons than he had in the past. He's dynamic – it's going to take 11 guys. Hopefully we can cheat a couple guys and put two more guys on the field, [because] it's going to take 13 guys to contain him. We've just got to make our plays, everybody has got to know where he's at. It's going to be fun playing against him."

CENTER ROBERT HAINSEY

(On what improvements the offensive line can make before Thursday night's game against the Ravens)

"We all can improve on our technique and fundamentals and work together to execute the best way possible. [We need to] protect our quarterback and dominate the line of scrimmage in the run game – give our running backs good holes to run through. That goes a long way."

(On how quickly the team has to turn the page on a short week)

"Especially playing on Thursday, you don't have a lot of time to dwell on things – so like I said, we come in today and see what we have to fix, make the adjustments and corrections that are necessary and get ready to go for this Thursday."

(On if the offense's struggles on short yardage are a technique issue)

"I think it always is. I think a lot of the issues can be traced back to those things, in my opinion. So, it comes down to guys working on what needs to be worked on and executing it."

(On if Thursday's game is a 'must-win')

"You go into every game trying to win, no matter what. You do everything you can to come out of the game with a win. So, I wouldn't look at it that way. I look at it as: we have an opponent coming in here and we're going to do everything we can to prepare like we always do."

(On how hard it is to hear things in the huddle)

"It's definitely harder on the road, you've got the crowd noise, and you have to go on silent-count – and that's not an easy thing for anyone. So, it's just little things we have to clean up. Those things hurt drives, so we have to eliminate them."

LINEBACKER DEVIN WHITE

(On what makes Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson so dangerous)

"He can do everything – he can throw the ball, he can run the ball. He's elusive in open space – he's got every attribute [you want] as a player. He's like a create-a-player."

(On how frustrating the back-to-back losses are)

"[It's] very frustrating, but at the end of the day you've just got to put in more work and own it – [you've got to] come to work and try to get that taste out of your mouth."

(On if the team wants to get the bad taste out of their mouth)

"Most definitely. Any game – everybody [doesn't] to do what we do, so just having an opportunity to go out there and play ball is always a good thing. It's another one – it's an important one, especially losing two in a row."

(On what contributes to the defense struggling in the second half)

"I just think we have mental lapses at one spot – there's always one spot that creates the opportunity for a big play. We've just got to stay sound for four quarters because we come out on fire, we do a good job, everybody takes care of what they can take care of. Lately, it breaks down and it's one person each time – a different person – so we've just got to clean it up and be more consistent."

(On how badly the team needs a win)

"We need the win. We need the win. We're a ballclub that can win a lot of games, and we will win a lot of games. Being at the top of the division is good for playoff picture, but we've got to fix the task at hand right now before we even start thinking about the playoffs because we'd just be a one-and-done team. It's important to get back on the right track of things."

(On if he's faced another quarterback similar to Baltimore QB Lamar Jackson)

"Josh Allen. Great quarterback."
