HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On the status of WR Emeka Egbuka, who left practice early on Wednesday)
"I don't know the status as of right now because I was on the other field, but I'll check in with that as soon as I go in. I didn't see it. They [haven't] gotten it to me yet."
(On if he's decided which QB will start the team's first preseason game against the New York Jets on Friday, and whether QB Jake Browning has been ruled out for the game)
"Not yet. I mean, Jake is not ruled out of it either, so he's getting treatment, and we're going to see where he's at the next two days, as well. If not, I'm sure Connor [Bazelak] will start the game."
(On his assessment of the team's second joint practice with the Jets)
"[The] effort is outstanding on both sides. I think we got a lot of work done. The young guys got a chance to play against different guys, a different scheme, so to speak, and they got thrown in there early. There's a lot of tape to correct [and] there's a lot of things to learn from, but the effort was great. We've just got to clean up some things."
(On CB Ayden Garnes' performance in the two joint practices with the Jets, plus his overall performance this training camp)
"He made some [plays] in two-minute [periods], and he's got some things to learn in the other periods as well – red zone…As far as team periods, he's got to understand situational football, but he's getting a crack at it with the ones right now, so he's getting valuable experience playing against (New York Jets WR) Garrett Wilson. He made a play at the end of the two-minute [period]. He's a very confident guy and he's very athletic. It'll be great to see him play Friday night."
(On how much he foresees OLB Rueben Bain Jr. playing in the first preseason game on Friday)
"Not much, if at all."
CENTER GRAHAM BARTON
(On how the two joint practices against the New York Jets have helped the team)
"It's great work because you're getting live looks, different personnel. Throughout camp, you kind of get used to who you're going against, you know their strengths and their weaknesses, and they know your strengths and weaknesses. It's hard to always truly evaluate yourselves off of practice against your [team]. Coming out against a totally different opponent with a different defense, different looks, different flavors, you kind of get to test your mettle. You get to test, one, obviously your physicality, but your communication ability, mentality wise, how you come together, chemistry, how you hit combinations. I think we made a lot of progress this week. These two good days of joint practice, I was really impressed with our unit as a whole. I thought we communicated well. Having a new offense with (Offensive Coordinator) Zac Robinson, this was kind of the first time we've gone live like this against another team, and there weren't a whole lot of issues schematically and targeting wise and communication wise. So, I was super pumped about that."
(On if he'll play during the first preseason game against the New York Jets on Friday, August 14)
"No, I'm not sure yet. I mean, you always prepare like you're going to and [I'll] be ready, but we'll see."
(On the two-minute drill at the end of Wednesday's joint practice)
"That was awesome. We kind of marched down the field, receivers made some good plays. From what I could tell at least, [we] protected well up front. That's what you want for your first live look at a two-minute drill."
(On how difficult it was to scramble at the end of the two-minute drill)
"The run look was tough. It made it hard on our backside combinations. To be able to get stuffed, get back up to the line and be able to call a play, get the blocking scheme right, get the snap off and find an open receiver that quickly is not easy. This early in August to be able to execute like that, it's pretty cool. Definitely a good building block for us."
(On his impression of the rookie class throughout training camp)
"Yeah, super impressed. Obviously, you guys all have seen Rueben [Bain Jr.] and what he can do and his just mentality and stuff. [Josiah] Trotter is another one of those guys who's super physical. [It] definitely makes us better as an O-Line going against guys like that. It's been super impressive to see all of them really. Just the edge - them and the free agents that have come in. Guys like A'Shawn [Robinson] and [Alex] Anzalone and 'Nacho' (Rakeem Nuñez-Roches). That defense is just playing really physical. I think you saw it out here in joint practice, I didn't get to watch a whole lot, but just the two-minute drill. There wasn't a lot of time for (New York Jets QB) Geno [Smith] to get that ball out, you always like to see that, so it was good."
QUARTERBACK JALON DANIELS
(On how he evaluates himself after the two joint practices with the New York Jets)
"Yeah, I mean, being able to adapt to the game, being able to see another team, see another defense, be able to see what they're doing on the other side of the ball, being able to go back home, go back to the [television] and watch film on it. I mean, that's always great for me because I feel like I'm probably my worst critic. Even when things are going [well] outside, I feel like for myself, I like to try to be able to find those little things and keep getting better."
(On how he feels about playing his first NFL game on Friday, August 14)
"I wouldn't even say excited is the word for it. I mean, it's a dream come true to be able to play at this level, playing professional football. I mean, I've been dreaming of this moment since I was a kid. Being able to go out [there] and be able to play some NFL football [on] Friday, it means the world."
(On what practicing against another team has done for his game)
"It helps you be able to see, like I said, see a different defense, be able to see a different structure, be able to see the tempo of other players. Obviously, this is my first time going against another NFL team…Just being able to see what they do, [being] able to see little things that I'm able to key on on film and just keep on getting better from there."
(On how QB Baker Mayfield has helped him throughout training camp)
"Yeah, I mean, a lot. There's a lot of different things that we didn't go over in college that you have to be able to know here at this level. To have him right there, right beside me, [to] be able to ask him whatever question I want. It's been very tremendous in my development."
(On if it helps that him and QB Baker Mayfield have similar play styles)
"I mean, just being able to talk to him about when to be able to get out of the pocket, how to be able to stay within the pocket. When the pocket breaks down, what are you going to do? What's going to be your next move? I think something that we harp on a lot in the quarterback room is ball security. In college, there [were] a lot of times where you had the ball in one hand, and out here these defensive players are out there trying to be able to get the ball. They [have] to make money, too. So, just being able to talk to him about those little situations, nuances, and be able to develop from there."
