HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On what he took away from the joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday)
"I thought that we got some good work out there. I thought we played more with emotion than we did fundamentals, so we've got to clean that up because those guys haven't played in a while. But, I thought it was very good work."
(On the team's energy on Tuesday, and balancing emotion with fundamentals)
"Tons of energy, like I said, tons of energy, but we've got to work on the technical stuff. We've got to kind of take emotion out of it sometimes when you're not doing it fundamentally right. We had some good plays. We had some plays that we can coach better, and they can play better."
(On his assessment of how T Tristan Wirfs and CB Benjamin Morrison looked in practice)
"I'll look at the tape. I didn't watch them all individually, but they came off healthy, so I'll see what the tape says."
(On how T Paul Rubelt performed in Tampa Bay's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Aug. 22)
"It was his first start. Obviously, there [are] some things he can improve on fundamentally and technically, but he fought and he battled his tail off in there."
(On if it changes his approach to joint practices when facing a team that utilizes a similar offensive scheme to Tampa Bay's)
"No, it doesn't. I mean, both of them have their little tweaks in the system. They're not directly the same, so you've still got to play, and you've got to play and read your keys."
(On what impressed him about the Jaguars in Tuesday's joint practice)
"They're well-coached and they come off the ball."
(On where CB Ayden Garnes has grown the most since he joined the Buccaneers)
"Just understanding the defensive system. We knew he was talented, but he's kind of calmed down. Instead of making plays [and] exchanging one-for-one, he's playing the right way and he's doing the little things right. It's the stuff he does when the ball doesn't come his way that's been impressing us."
(On what he wants to accomplish in this week's joint practices with the Jaguars)
"Just to get good work in. You know, we've got to get ready for the season after this, so it's going to be important for the other guys, the younger guys, to step up and make plays. There [are] cuts coming up [and] there [are] going to be some close calls. The other guys, you know, they've got to get ready for the season – they've got to get used to playing 50, 60-something plays as opposed to six to eight plays per [game]."
(On the similarities between Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen and Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson, and what makes Coen's offense so explosive)
"Him and Zac are very similar, very smart. [He] knows how to run the ball, understands how to run the ball. It's not necessarily about my guy is better than yours, but it's about scheme and getting the edge and getting the extra blocker or the extra half a man so they can get their guy through, and he does a good job that way."
(On what makes LB Josiah Trotter such an effective run stopper)
"He's an instinctive football player. He's very smart. He's not just strong, he's savvy. He knows how to slip blocks when it's time to slip blocks, and you can't teach that."
(On how much the anticipated starters might play in Tampa Bay's final preseason game)
"Right now, I'm leaning towards not playing them, but we'll see how tomorrow goes."
(On LB SirVocea Dennis not participating in practice on Tuesday)
"It's his groin. He's been dealing with his groin."
(On how good it was to see T Tristan Wirfs return to practice)
"It's good to see him fresh, obviously, making progress, so we've just got to keep making strides."
(On if T Benjamin Chukwuma would be available for Friday night's preseason game)
"[It is] too early to tell right now. We'll see how he came through this one."
(On what he saw from WR Tez Johnson in practice on Tuesday)
"He shows speed. Obviously, I didn't watch the offensive side of the ball. I've got to see the tape on that. All I saw was the two-minute, but he flashed out there. He flashed in practice. I'll look at the tape and see."
(On LB Alex Anzalone being involved in a small skirmish in the joint practice on Tuesday)
"Well, he wasn't the only one. I mean, you know, there's push and give-and-take on both sides. Obviously, we started some, they started some, but it didn't get out of hand. He's one of our bell cows on defense. He's an emotional guy, but we've got to learn how to play with emotion and keep it the right way."
(On WR Ted Hurst III's growth within the offense)
"His growth has come in understanding the offense. That allows him to play faster. He's not thinking as much, so he's not playing half-speed – he's playing full-speed. He understands where to go and where to be, and that allows him to play a lot faster."
(On where the emotion comes from when he says the team was 'playing with emotion')
"That comes when you get off the bus. Obviously, when you're practicing against somebody else, you try to show…They play with emotion, we play with emotion. We've just got to play the right way."
QUARTERBACK BAKER MAYFIELD
(On his assessment of the joint practice)
"It's tough. I thought, you know, they gave us some good looks. They were playing with their hair on fire, I'll say that. If this was a full game, I don't think we would have come out on the winning side of it. So, [it was] just a little eye-opening. [We've] got to get back and watch the tape. You know, it's never as good or as bad as you think it is. I think, from my standpoint, they out-physicaled us, and that's never what you want to have. So, it doesn't matter who we have out there – you want guys that are going to do their very best to be the more physical team and want it more, and I don't know if we did that today. The tape will tell, but, yeah, two-minute work was decent…Obviously, the lightning kind of cut it short. But, yeah, at that point in practice, we've got to get in game shape. Guys were kind of huffing and puffing a little bit. It's hot, I get it, but, yeah, we needed it."
(On having T Tristan Wirfs back in practice on Tuesday)
"Yeah, [it felt] really good. You know, obviously just slowly working him back in there, not trying to overdo it. You know, the most important thing [is] we need him for the regular season, but, yeah, definitely great to have him in there. You can tell the whole O-line when he's in there, there's a relaxing style, just the comfort that it is when he's in there. They have so many reps together, [the] communication, obviously the caliber of player he is…But, yeah, it's great to have him back."
(On why he clicked so well with former Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator and current Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen)
"Liam is a player's coach, you know, somebody that…He has his system, yes. He has his bread and butter that he wants to get done, but he always adapts to the players and personnel that he has. I think just his communication style when it comes down to that as well. Yeah, Liam is a close friend of mine and [I'm] happy for him, but he's a hell of a coach."
(On T Paul Rubelt getting increased reps at offensive tackle)
"Yeah, I mean, he is a giant wall, that's for sure. I definitely can't see over him – can't see over any of them, but definitely not Paul. He's been thrown in the fire for us. Obviously, 'Chuks' (Ben Chukwuma), he got hurt as well [and] 'Skuley' (Justin Skule) had a little injury as well so Paul [is] getting a lot of reps. It's been good for him, a lot of learning experiences. To be able to have depth this early in camp at tackle is good. So, I'm just hoping they continue to improve, but I'm proud of Paul."
(On getting the ball out quickly against Jacksonville's edge rushers on Tuesday)
"Yeah, I mean, when you have edge rushers like they do, you're not trying to hold on to it too long. You're trying to make it easier on your guys up front, especially when they're pretty exhausted in practice – trying to get the ball out of your hands and let your playmakers do the work."
(On the competition in the quarterback room)
"Yeah, to be honest with you, having Connor Bazelak here last year, I think he's grown tremendously. Obviously, he's not getting a ton of reps, but he's a really, really sharp kid. I think when he gets his chances, he takes advantage of them. Jake [Browning] has had a hell of an offseason and camp so far. Then, obviously, you guys have seen Jalon [Daniels] make a lot of splash plays. For him, just the growing aspect of the quarterback game – this system is pretty tough to get down, a lot of verbiage. He's made tremendous strides in that. I'm proud of him in that regard. It's just exciting to see those guys duke it out. But yeah, in the quarterback room, it's important to all support each other."
(On QB Jalon Daniels' toughness)
"Yeah, he was getting hit from all sides a little bit. He's tough, a tough cookie. Our personalities are a little bit different, but he takes the hits and just gets back up like nothing happened. So, on to the next one. It's a different style, but I respect the hell out of it."
(On where the offense stands at this point in training camp)
"I feel like we're in a good spot with the understanding of the system, the checks, what we're trying to get done. Now, it's just strictly about execution, physicality, and I think that's the part today that we were lacking. I don't think that anybody is too far behind when it comes to the knowledge of what we're trying to get done, which is great. That's what you want at this point of camp, but also, when you have that down, the execution needs to be there. So, yeah, like I said earlier, I'm going to go back and watch the tape, but there's a lot of plays that we'll probably want back today."
(On if he can tell that the game is slowing down for WR Ted Hurst III)
"Yeah, a lot. You know, when you're able to – as a rookie with his talent, his body, God-given ability – when you're able to not think as much and just go play and use that ability, good things happen. You can see it clicking, just the motions, everything that we're trying to get done. When he has a one-on-one matchup, he knows the ball is probably coming his way. He's making a lot of plays. It's just, like I said earlier, a lot of the guys need to get their game legs ready. So, he was hurting a little bit today – a lot of routes, a lot of reps. We're down on receivers, but those guys understand that."
(On how RB Bucky Irving has looked lately)
"I think Bucky looks really good. He put on a lot of muscle, but still shifty as ever. [I'm] proud of Bucky…That surgery sucks. I've gone through it. It's a pain – a lot of the same things, routine, every single day, that you're itching to just get out there and do what you want, but not able to. He's done a great job rehabbing and coming back from that. Then, I think he's looking really good right now. I think his tracks when it comes to the run game, protection-wise, [and] I think his knowledge of what we're trying to get done in the pass game has come a long way. He's taken another big step we were looking for him to do."
WIDE RECEIVER CHRIS GODWIN JR.
(On what stood out from Tuesday's joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars)
"I think we had some good things going on. I feel like, offensively, we started the practice pretty [well]. I thought we finished it pretty [well], but we had a bit of a lull in the middle. I guess you expect when you're going up against a good team that there's going to be some back and forth. So, nothing too concerning. Sometimes you just have to have more energy and we [have] to bring it, you know what I mean? We [have] to generate our own energy, especially when we're on the road because in situations like this, if it's a game, it's going to be a hostile environment. So, we [have] to be able to pull our heads out of our [butts] sometimes and get back on track."
(On the differences in how he prepares for preseason compared to regular season)
"Yeah, it's definitely different because you have to use the practices to really prepare your mind and your body for the games. Luckily, just having the experience that I've had, you kind of know what to expect in a game, you kind of know when you feel game-ready. You just have to be really, really intentional about the work that you get in in practice. The coaches do a good job of structuring things that way as well so you're constantly building up for that. Sure, the games help, but the preseason is a much different speed than the regular season anyway. It's like, you get a little bit of a look but it's not like…If you go into regular season expecting it to be the speed of the preseason you're going to get your head cracked."
(On his thoughts on the competition for the backup quarterback spot)
"I think we have some really good guys back there. Obviously, Jake [Browning] has been around for a while, he's been doing his thing, he has a ton of experience. Then, Jalon [Daniels] is here, you guys saw what Jalon can do last week, right? He's a young, exciting player. He has a strong arm, but has a lot to learn, right? I think that we have some potential with both of those guys, and I mean, we'll see how it plays out."
(On the injuries in the wide receiver room and if he thinks they'll be ready to go for Week 1)
"Yeah, I do. It's like guys are trending in the right direction, right? We have a good athletic staff that will get these guys prepared. But again, it's hard to predict super far out, right? Regardless, I feel like we have a room that I'm confident in, guys that can go out and make plays. As you saw today, Tez [Johnson] [was] making plays. Ted [Hurst III] is making plays, right? We [have] guys that can really go."
(On when the game started slowing down for him and made it easier to understand plays)
"I mean, honestly, I think it was midway through my rookie year. I was in a different position than Ted [Hurst III] was, or than Ted is, rather. I feel like I had – obviously Mike [Evans], 'Humph' (Adam Humphries) and 'D-Jack' (DeSean Jackson) in front of me, so I was the next rotating in. They all were healthy going into the year, so during training camp I was getting a lot of reps rotating, but I didn't really get a ton of game time until the middle of the year. It took me a little bit of time to kind of get adjusted. I played a lot of special teams. Ted [Hurst III] is in a different spot, but I think he's been doing a great job. He's very receptive to coaching. He wants to be a great player. I think the sky is the limit. He has some unbelievable potential to make some really, really good plays. He's so explosive, especially for that size. He has the ability to jump, make tough catches. He's doing some really good things."
WIDE RECEIVER TEZ JOHNSON
(On how he feels after getting back to practice on Tuesday)
"It feels good just to be out there with my brothers. It always sucks when you're not out there with them. Just being back at joint practice today, [I have] to get my feet back under me, but it just feels good just having my teammates with me, encouraging me to be back and excited for me to be back. It feels great."
(On the performance by the offense in joint practice on Tuesday)
"We [have] some stuff to clean up. Not every day is going to be a perfect day. We see ups and downs in football. One day you look great, one day you look bad. I mean, today, you just [have] to go out there and go back to the hotel and watch film and fix our mistakes."
(On his thoughts on the backup quarterbacks)
"All of our quarterbacks are great. No matter who is in there, we trust them, they trust us. Whoever is in after Baker [Mayfield] is legit. Every last one of our quarterbacks from Connor Bazelak, 'J.D.' (Jalon Daniels), Jake [Browning], all those guys are great."
(On what it felt like to see T Tristan Wirfs back to practicing)
"It looks great. Tristan [Wirfs] is a big piece to the offense. He looks great, as always. [I am] just glad to have him back and him getting his feet up underneath him too. Like I said, it always sucks being out for any player. Having Tristan back, it feels very great."
