Buccaneers Select Quotes - Monday, September 9, 2019

Head Coach Bruce Arians

(Opening statement)

"After watching the tape, it was obvious the penalties were probably the biggest thing in the game, other than the turnovers. We had a fourth-and-two and a third-and-10 that let drives keep going with questionable pass interference calls – one was pass interference. The turnovers – after looking at the film, the biggest problem with the touchdown from the interception was Peyton [Barber] was about three yards too deep on his route. Last night, I thought he was fine, but he was too deep. The ball was thrown perfectly. Mike [Evans] missed his hot. Jameis [Winston] executed the play perfectly and the other two guys let him down. But the one for the screen – that's just got to be a throwaway – but that other one was not on the quarterback. The other two were not on the quarterback – we dropped one right in our hands – so we've got to eliminate those type of plays if we're going to beat anybody. I thought defensively, [we did a] great job of stopping the run throughout the entire game. They did a good job of finding a little counter play that worked for a couple of times, then we shut that one down. But overall, defensively, we can play better if we just eliminate some penalties and get off the field and play really well. Offensively, the bright side I thought was the running game. I thought the running game and overall pass protection was pretty solid. We've just got to do a better job of getting open and scoring in the red zone. Other than the turnovers and the penalties, that was the negative thing for us, losing two touchdowns on penalties and then fumbling a ball in the red zone. You're talking about a lot of points that we gave up in a very close game."

(On if there was enough pressure on 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo)

"Yeah, we made him get rid of the ball a few times fast. He had to throw some stuff away with all the blitzes, but the front four can do a better job when we only send four."

(On facing former Buccaneer DT Gerald McCoy on Thursday)

"It's about the same as it was for Kwon [Alexander]. Hopefully, he doesn't get thrown out of the game too."

(On if the receivers had issues getting separation)

"We can do a better job of running routes, especially all our deep stuff. They did a good job of covering the deep stuff and we can do a better job of running routes, for sure."

(On the message he wants QB Jameis Winston to take from his performance on Sunday)

"That it's over – right now, it's 1 o'clock Wednesday for us right now, so it's time to move on."

(On RB Ronald Jones II having the hot hand in the running game)

"I don't know if it could've gotten any hotter unless he [would have] run through the last one and scored a couple times, but he was very decisive and there were a lot of holes for him to be decisive in. He was running through arm tackles and that's exactly what I expected out of him."

(On C Ryan Jensen's run blocking)

"Yeah, we're a tight end to tight end, inside running team, so yeah, Ryan did a heck of a job. Ali [Marpet] had a heck of a ball game. Donovan [Smith] had a heck of a game in the run game also."

(On if he felt that the team needed to play better around QB Jameis Winston on the plays he threw an interception)

"On one of them – actually on two of them. Two of them, he had nothing to do with. He throws a perfect ball, we drop it, it goes up in the air [and] they get an interception. Then the guy runs a route too deep and he threw it right where it's supposed to be after the guy missed the hot, so guys have to play better around him."

(On if Jameis could have checked the ball down to RB Dare Ogunbowale on his second interception)

"No, O.J. [Howard] is wide open. He's the first read."

(On if the 49ers' secondary taking away deep shots is what caused Jameis Winston to throw within five yards a majority of his attempts)

"Pretty much. It [made] us stay underneath. They weren't going to give us the big chunks down the field, and they did a good job of that. We got the one P.I. – it should've been two – but that's good defense and that's Robert Saleh's style – that's Seattle's style. You just move the ball – we had a 17-play drive, a 12-play drive – so just keep churning it up."

(On the matchup of 49ers CB Richard Sherman on RB Peyton Barber when Sherman got a pick-six)

"Well, if he stops at the right speed, he's wide open – at the right spot. Sherm didn't jump it. The ball was outside and he was still in front of Sherm, but the ball was where he's supposed to have been."

(On how frustrating it was to see Jameis Winston throw an interception in a two-minute situation)

"To throw an interception-touchdown, you hate that. You think a screen's a safe call on first down and then it ends up biting you, so yeah, you never want to end a game like that."

(On if avoiding that interception takes situational awareness)

"It's knowing where to throw the ball away. We ran the tight end across and we ran a screen, so there's no receivers on this side, so you've got to throw it at his feet. You've just got to dirt it and hope you don't get another grounding call, but you've got to throw it in the dirt."

(On if Jameis Winston should know to do that by now)

"He was under pretty good duress, but yeah, you would hope."

(On when Winston needs to be told what his expectations are)

"They've been said many times – I don't think I have to repeat them. Y'all repeat them all the time, so he doesn't have to be told too many more times."

(On ILB Devin White playing while dealing with an illness)

"That's exactly what I would expect of the guy – he's tough. He's had that tonsillitis, so he fought through it and hopefully we can get him better."

(On if there is a way to put Jameis Winston in situations where the game isn't on his shoulders)

"Yeah – I think all quarterbacks are the same unless you're Tom Brady. You've got to run the ball and stay balanced so your play-action game can have hopefully chunks, but also just to get short ones. [We ran a] really good bootleg to O.J. [Howard] down there on the five-yard line – that was a good play. That running game sets those easy ones up."

(On his impressions of WR Mike Evans' performance in dealing with a tough matchup)

"They're all good – Mike's great, so he should win most of them. We've got to find ways to make sure we get him the ball. But again, he was way under the weather and sucked it up and went."

(On his initial impressions of the Carolina Panthers)

"They're always good, and Ron [Rivera] is a great coach. I think Cam [Newton] is a primetime player if there ever was one, so we'll get his best. [I] played him so many times in Arizona, we kind of know him [and] they know us, so [with] the short week, the biggest thing is to get there fresh and ready to go mentally and know what we're doing."

(On what kind of challenges Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey presents)

"He's probably the best dual-back there is in the league right now. I used to think it was David Johnson, but Christian's passed him up. As a receiver, he's a hell of a match-up problem, and as a runner, he's a great runner. They do a good job of having two backs in the game and you never know which one's going anywhere and they have a lot of speed. You always have to be accountable for Cam [Newton] breaking down and making something happen on his own, so it's always a tough offense to defend."

(On if facing a back like McCaffrey is where ILB Devin White helps the defense)

"On certain plays – not out wide in space. You'd rather have safeties or somebody else on him out there."

(On if White's tonsillitis has been alleviated after playing yesterday)

"No, he's still got it."

(On Jameis Winston's third interception)

"Yeah, that's the hardest one to swallow, and I think it was the hardest one for him. Every game is a learning experience. Obviously, there was some plays in there [where he was] not quite knowing the offense well enough yet, to second, third and fourth guys. That goal line play is one that they busted coverage and it was like 'I didn't expect him to be open of all people,' and you've got to hit him right now. We could've done a better job as [coaches] with the back side of that play to get that safety out of there, so it's not all on the quarterback – there's a lot of it that's on the coaching too, and that's me because I designed the damn play."

(On if RB Dare Ogunbowale needed to do a better job when he was pushed into P Bradley Pinion)

"He's our pass protector, so he's tough – that's why he's got the 'captain' on his chest in the special teams. Keith [Armstrong] talks, 'Take two and hit the guy' – he caught him, and that's a big guy. It's just a poor play on his part."

(On if the team needs to have perspective after losing in Week 1)

"Yeah – whether Week 1 or Week 10, it's the next one. Learn from what you did, get it corrected, and when you get it corrected, the wins will start happening. I don't think everybody that lost yesterday's season is over. This is a quick turnaround, so it kind of helps mentally because we are right into our game plan now. This one's over. It's 1 o'clock Wednesday now."

(On what his message to the team was coming back into the building today)

"Same thing."

Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles

(On what stood out to him from a defensive standpoint from Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers)

"The biggest thing was the effort – we had 11 guys getting to the ball. We made some mistakes, but they covered it up by the effort they showed and that was the biggest thing."

(On if the defensive players returning from injuries were able to shake off the rust quickly)

"They played hard. There are still some kinks we have to work out with them after only practicing for a week, but they played hard and the effort was great."

(On ILB Devin White's performance)

"He is a tough guy. Obviously, we had a bug going around last week, but he came back from it. He performed well and that's all you can ask of him. It says a lot about the character of the guy."

(On cleaning up the defensive penalties on a quick turnaround before the team's Week 2 match-up with the Carolina Panthers)

"Well, we can't have them and we understand that. We've got situational football – penalties are the biggest drive killers or drive stoppers. We stopped ourselves on several third downs. We can't have the penalties."

(On the pass rush)

"The ball was coming out quick a lot. They were committed to running the football. Sometimes you have to cover guys and take care of certain things – obviously with [George] Kittle and some of the other guys, not to get beat or fooled by anything. I'm satisfied with the pass rush with the ball coming out as quick as it was."

(On the challenges that Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey presents as a dual-threat back)

"Major – he creates a lot of problems. He had about 200 total yards yesterday [himself in 343] yards of offense. Again, not just running the ball but catching the ball, as well. He is a great route runner, he has great hands [and] he is probably one of the best all-around backs in the game right now."

(On his personnel scheme for defending McCaffrey)

"I don't think you can stop him with one guy – sometimes not even with two, and he's not the only guy they have. They are very talented across the board. We've just got to play disciplined football."

(On his success slowing down McCaffrey as head coach of the Jets)

"I think he was just coming in. They had Jonathan Stewart, as well, at the time so they had a lot of more weapons – they had [Devin] Funchess and everything else. [They were] just working him in at that time, so I don't think he was as big of a factor as he is now."

(On if he will watch the Buccaneers-Panthers games from 2018)

"I watch all of the games from last year anyway just to look at our personnel. Then you try to get a look at your division opponents, as well, so we've seen some games."

(On the key handling Carolina's misdirection plays)

"Just reading our keys – I mean they come straight at you, as well, so we've got to read our keys like I said. They can do a lot of different things. They have a lot of different athletes over there who can hurt you – three receivers, they've got three good tight ends, the quarterback can hurt you [and] the running back can hurt you. They kind of stretch you defensively, so fundamentally we've got to be sound."

(On the performance of S Jordan Whitehead in Sunday's game vs. San Francisco)

"He had a lot of tackles. Jordan had a great camp. He did some good things yesterday. He just has to continue to keep getting better."

(On CB Vernon Hargreaves III getting off to positive start with an interception returned for a touchdown in the season opener)

"You like to see them make plays as a whole. We've got to get more turnovers because we didn't win the ballgame. So, we've got to get more turnovers and we've got to cut down on the penalties. But, Vernon has been healthy all camp and he has had a good training camp and it has carried over into the game."

(On S Darian Stewart receiving the bulk of the playing time over S Mike Edwards)

"Well, Mike was just getting back. By that time, we had the bulk of the game plan in. We tried to work him in a little bit, but he will get more reps this week."

(On the performance of DB M.J. Stewart against the 49ers)

"I thought he played well. He did a lot of good things. I can help him more with the touchdown he gave up, as far as call wise and putting him in a better position. But he played well."

(On utilizing corners vs. safeties on fast offensive players)

"Well, they are all fast – there is not going to be any letdown the rest of the season. We've got to cover guys. Mike [Edwards] is fast enough to cover guys. M.J. [Stewart] is fast enough to cover guys. It is just a matter of us getting to the quarterback and helping him out making calls."
