HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On the work the team got during the first joint practice with the New York Jets)
"We got some [really] good work, I thought. It started out [really] well. [There were] a few minor dust-ups and infractions, but nobody really did anything when we got those infractions. We came up here to play football and get some work in – they did too. I thought we got some good work done. We've got to see what the mistakes are on tape and kind of move forward from there."
(On not wanting players to get involved in scuffles during joint practices)
"We don't want it to happen in practice. Obviously, I was on the other field [so] I didn't see it at the time, but I heard about it. We definitely don't want that happening. We don't want the fights, period. Enforcer or no enforcer, we just came up here to play ball."
(On if there is an update on QB Jake Browning's status after he left practice early on Tuesday)
"Not at this time, no."
(On whether Browning was going to be the anticipated starter for the first preseason game against the Jets on Friday, August 14)
"Jake would have started the game off, yes."
(On if there's an update on the status of CB Zyon McCollum)
"No more update. He's just healing. He's doing a lot better. We'll see when he comes out."
(On if there's an update on the status of T Tristan Wirfs)
"Nothing new."
(On Tampa Bay's defense recording several interceptions in practice on Tuesday)
"I saw the interceptions…[I was] more concerned about the holding calls – there were a couple of those early on, so I've got to see the tape and see what those are. It's good [that] they're going after the ball."
(On seeing New York Jets QB Geno Smith and other former players he's coached during joint practices)
"It's good to see him. I saw a lot of old teammates, old guys that I coached that were here. I saw 'Douz' (Leger Douzable), I saw Quincy [Enunwa], obviously Geno [Smith], Demario [Davis]. I saw quite a few guys there. It's good to see him out there. He's healthy. He's happy. [I'm] happy for him."
(On what he thinks QB Geno Smith can do for the Jets this year)
"I haven't faced him that many times – actually, I haven't seen him too much since. He's been out in Seattle and he's been out on the West Coast, so I really haven't seen him much at all. But, obviously, he's a leader. He knows how to throw the football. He's just got to stay healthy for them."
(On the young cornerbacks who've been getting extended playing time during training camp)
"They've definitely gotten better in practices. It's good to see them against different competition when they come out here. We'll see what the tape is and see how they communicated and see what those things look like, but it's a great chance for them."
(On DB Keionte Scott potentially earning a starting role at nickel cornerback)
"He's a candidate, but again, it's still early. [Jacob] Parrish goes outside and inside. Keionte is still learning the ropes because he missed the spring, but he's getting a lot of good work."
(On if he is concerned about the dust-ups between the two teams during Tuesday's practice)
"You're always concerned with the dust-ups. You don't want them at all. You don't want them at all. It gets to be spirited, and both teams are trying to protect their guys and get them off of them. We're here to play football, and we understand that, and they know [that]. There's not too much going on when they're in there – a little bravado on both sides of the ball – but we're here to play football and they're here to play football as well."
(On if he had a chance to evaluate the performance by New York Jets EDGE David Bailey in practice on Tuesday)
"I didn't get a chance to see him. I'll go back over the tape, and I'll see him."
(On if he was planning to play QB Baker Mayfield in the first preseason game on Friday)
"Not at all."
(On if quarterbacks Jalon Daniels and Connor Bazelak would be the only quarterbacks to play in the preseason game on Friday if QB Jake Browning is injured)
"Probably, but we'll work something out."
TACKLE LUKE GOEDEKE
(On how the offensive line performed during the joint practice on Tuesday)
"Yeah, I mean, it's early to say, but I think for the most part, I think we held our own. I've got to take a look at the film, obviously. I mean, there's always stuff to correct and everything, individually and team-wise. I think we had some good runs, and we had some not-so-good runs, and we've got to take a look at protection, how we held up and everything. I think overall we did solid, but not good enough, obviously. You always strive to be better."
(On focusing his passion and intensity onto the football field following a scuffle)
"I would say I flip a switch when I get on a football field. I mean, I play my best games when I'm angry. So, to be honest, if someone's trying to jab me or do extra stuff, it only plays in my favor, to be honest with you. I feel like over the years I've gotten good at being able to toe the line in games and never cross that."
(On what both teams can do to prevent the altercations from carrying over to the next practice)
"Yeah, I mean, a few of us and a few of the leaders from the other team, we just had a conversation and [we] just felt like, 'Listen, we're here to practice.' [We] just kind of keep each other up. We're here to get better at football. Obviously, you can only control what you can control, but just realize why we're here. Obviously, fighting isn't the reason we're here. We're here to get better and play football. Try and keep the game the game, and it is what it is."
(On how tackles Ben Chukwuma and Justin Skule have performed in T Tristan Wirfs' absence)
"From what I've seen so far in camp, they've held their own, definitely. They've done a great job over there. 'Skuley' (Justin Skule) and 'Chuks' (Ben Chukwuma) both individually have really been holding their own. Whether it's in the run game, pass game, switching up sets, they've definitely been doing a solid job. I'm proud of both of them for filling in [during] Tristan's absence. They're definitely holding their own. Hats off to them."
(On the feedback rookie OLB Rueben Bain Jr. asks Goedeke for after practices)
"Yeah, he'll ask me what I'm seeing, like if he's giving anything away – kind of what I'm feeling on his rushes and stuff like that, and just kind of what I'm seeing [and] like I said, if he's showing anything. So, that we kind of discuss and go over…I talked to him before practice. I mean, I'll see how he did during practice. I hope he did great. I just tell him, 'Play your game, man.' I mean, it's no different than college. Football is football."
RUNNING BACK SEAN TUCKER
(On how he thinks the first joint practice with the New York Jets went)
"Yeah, we definitely had some good runs out there going against another team for the first time. With 'Z-Rob' (Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson) out there coaching us, just us getting used to him in this type of setting. Going against another team, getting some good runs and [we were] able to get some good work in today."
(On what affect RB Kenny Gainwell has had on the team)
"Yeah, he definitely [has] coached us up, in the running back room specifically. With his abilities of kind of being like a slot back or catching out of the backfield...him bringing his ability to the room and showing his ways to us and getting us better, too, as well."
(On his comfortability in the outside zone scheme)
"Yeah, I like that a lot. With 'Z-Rob' (Offensive Coordinator Zac Robinson) coming in with his offense, [there is] definitely a lot more outside zone, I would say. Getting used to that and having that ability to definitely stretch it outside more is kind of up my alley."
(On the running backs involvement in the pass game)
"Yeah, he definitely [has] a lot of different routes and new plays for us. Especially with the addition of Kenny [Gainwell] coming in [and] putting his abilities to use. A lot of us [running] backs [are] just catching up and getting the plays down."
CORNERBACK DAMARION WILLIAMS
(On his pick-six in Tuesday's joint practice with the New York Jets)
"[I] came in a little slow, a little sluggish, but started picking it up, caught the pick, took it back to the house. [I] had to line back up on defense to catch my breath and keep going. Today was smooth. [We have] a lot of stuff to work on and stack better days."
(On what he's trying to work on during this week)
"Holding my leverage, being more patient, things like that, and just having good discipline."
(On his journey getting to this point in his career)
"I've been on a couple teams, Baltimore, Seattle, ended up here last year midseason. Since I've been here, it's been just pretty much work. You get in, I mean, they rotate guys just to give different looks, stuff like that…whether you're one, two, three, you're going to get in the rotation regardless. I mean, that's how [Head] Coach [Todd] Bowles likes it, to pretty much give you a different look and see how you respond to it. That's a good thing here. They don't do that in a lot of places."
(On if his time in Tampa Bay last season was valuable even though he wasn't there for the full season)
"Yeah, it was very valuable because I'm from Miami originally, born and raised. To be back in Florida and playing ball, it's a blessing for me and I'm very happy [about] it."
(On the aggressiveness of the defense)
"It's the standard. How we practice, that's the standard. We want to take away the ball to be able to give the offense a chance or just taking it and go score with it. That's the standard we're building in Tampa Bay, and that's the standard [we're going] to keep."
