HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On the offense's performance in the red zone during Sunday's practice)
"They came out and made a couple great catches at the end, so that was good to see. We're functioning better as a unit, so that's the overall picture for both sides of the football going into next week."
(On WR Ted Hurst III's performance in practice on Sunday)
"He can go up and get the ball. You see it on his college tape as well, and those are good things to see."
(On what he is looking forward to in the joint practices against the New York Jets)
"It's a different scheme. You know, a different scheme, making sure we've got our fundamentals and technique down and then guys just playing to the ball and playing football. Here, it can get a little mundane when you go against the same guy every day and understand each other's scheme to a degree of what they're trying to do. So, to go against another scheme and then try to execute your plan, making sure we get ready for the season so we've got all our rules in place."
(On CB Ayden Garnes' growth since OTAs and rookie mini-camp)
"I think between OTAs and mini-camp finishing, and the way he's come into camp now, he's really learned a lot and studied, and it really looks like he has a better grasp of the scheme, so he's playing faster. We knew he was quick and fast and made a couple plays in OTAs, but he's really playing consistent football right now, and that's good to see from him."
(On OLB David Walker's progress after missing last season due to injury)
"Again, he's got his speed and his athleticism back. He's still progressing, and there are some things he has to see, but he's getting better by the day. It's early on, so this will be great to see him against other competition as well. He's one of the guys I'm looking forward to seeing next week."
(On the impact of the team's veteran and rookie additions)
"It's huge. I mean, it's night and day with the veterans that came in and with the rookies that have come in, just from a leadership standpoint, an attitude standpoint, a mentality and study habits [standpoint]. They've kind of lifted us a great deal mentally and being mentally tougher. I mean, from [Kenny] Gainwell to [Alex] Anzalone to A'Shawn [Robinson] to [Josiah] Trotter to all these guys – to [Rueben] Bain [Jr.] – all these guys that have come in. It's been a breath of fresh air to see, and everybody gravitates toward them. They did not stop being who they are, and guys understand that, and they know what type of team we want to have, so it's been good to see."
(On whether the newcomers have had an impact on the returning players)
"They have. They really have. The communication has been great. There's a lot of leadership out there, and I can't forget 'Nacho' (Rakeem Nuñez-Roches) as well. He adds a lot to the table. There's a lot of give-and-take there, and they understand how to be pros, and they understand what it takes to win."
(On what separates LB Josiah Trotter from all the other linebackers he's coached)
"I can't answer that in two weeks – what separates him – but he's a good football player. He's got size, and he comes downhill. We've had more athletic ones in the past. He's very athletic – I'm not taking that away from him – but he comes downhill. He's almost like a new-school linebacker in an old-school body, and he really knows how to play the game, and he really plays with intent to do serious harm."
(On CB Jacob Parrish's development and ability to play multiple positions)
"He's very quick. He's right up there with Zyon [McCollum] as one of our best cover guys, and he can play inside as well, so that makes him very versatile. Him understanding the scheme better in year two and playing more position ball as opposed to just using his athleticism all the time has put him in great position to have a very good camp, and he's been doing that."
(On preventing fights during joint practices with the New York Jets)
"Well, we always talk about it. That's not what we're going up there for. We're going up there to practice and get better. You get thrown out of games [for] fights, you'll probably get thrown out of practice fighting."
(On whether anyone has been ruled out from traveling to New Jersey for joint practices)
"No, we want to see who's nicked up and who can travel and who'll be best to stay behind, and we'll make those decisions this afternoon."
(On whether that includes NT Vita Vea)
"That includes Vita."
(On his expectations for the special teams coverage units this season)
"We'll see next week. It'll be the first time with a lot of these guys – new scheme, new units. We want to cover. We want to see what we have. We don't want to kick it in the end zone in preseason, we want to see exactly what we have. Danny [Smith] teaches a heck of a good football [lesson], and those guys have got to do a heck of a job, and I think they'll show up."
(On CB Benjamin Morrison's progress toward returning)
"He's the same as usual."
(On WR Chris Godwin Jr.'s physical condition compared to years past)
"I think he's healthier right now. I mean, years past he's been hurt the last two [training camps], but he's a lot healthier right now. He's into it mentally. He's sharp. He's tough. He understands it. He's a great mentor to the guys. He's still a playmaker for us. He makes big plays for us in the passing and blocking game. I think right now he's peaking at the right time."
(On whether CB Keionte Scott has the ability to be a good nickel cornerback, and if Scott is a good tackler)
"He does, yes…[He is] a very good tackler."
(On the flexibility that Scott provides considering his ability to play outside cornerback in addition to playing safety and nickel cornerback)
"We went through injuries before, and we had to put 'Izzy' (Chrisitan Izien) out there at a point in time, so right now we're trying to get a feel for who, in an emergency, can go out there if need be, and he's one of the guys taking reps out there."
CORNERBACK JACOB PARRISH
(On how his second training camp has been)
"It's been going [well]. Just settling in, you know, trying to teach guys around me, but it's going [well]. I'm very excited for what we got in the back end and just as a defense overall – should be a good year for us."
(On the difference of coming to training camp with a full season under his belt)
"Just knowing what works for me, and what doesn't work for me – like, simple things [such] as pre-practice warm-up, what I like to do with my body, you know, how to get my body warmed up, film study, all that stuff – just my approach to the game has been pretty good this year."
(On who has pushed him the most during training camp)
"I'll say Ted Hurst [III] – he had a very good catch on me today, actually. So, you know, he's a rookie, very tall, good at running, very fast – he's a good guy. Tez Johnson, he's been having a good camp. 'Mek' (Emeka Egbuka) – just all our receivers have been giving us good work."
(On what makes this defense different than what it was last year)
"I would say it's just the energy and the guys we brought in, you know, they got an edge to them, and when I'm out there, they make me want to go out there and just hit somebody, go out there and go to work with them boys, you know? So, they [have] got a very good competitive spirit, and it should be [really] good this year."
(On who excites him out of the new rookie defensive additions)
"I feel like all three of them. All three of them go out there and make plays – Rueben Bain [Jr., Josiah] Trotter – Trotter [has] got that dog [in him], even in the indoor, he's going out there and getting in fights, you know, that's the type of energy we need on this defense. Then Keionte [Scott] too, just doing the same thing, so I'm excited for all three of them."
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN RAKEEM NUÑEZ-ROCHES
(On how the energy is different from his first stint in Tampa Bay to now)
"One, we [have] a lot of younger guys. Just teaching them what it looks like. Just giving them that tenacity and just answering their questions. Sometimes they're still kind of just trying to learn. I'm like, 'Alright, after you learn it, now it's time to impose your will. Be you. Show your personality.'"
(On what it's like being teammates with DL A'Shawn Robinson again)
"That's my guy. You know I had him in New York. Once I [saw] him, I was like, 'Okay, I got my little Yin-Yang.' I'm loud with mine, A'Shawn is just behind the scenes, and he just puts paws on people."
(On OLB Rueben Bain Jr.)
"Rueben is impressive. Just to see him with his poise, the way that he stacks his rushes, his approach to the game, even just the way he watches his film on the sideline in between plays. He's like, ''Nacho' (Rakeem Nuñez-Roches), I want to do this better. Can you help me with this?' Just hearing him. I can't wait to see what he does this season."
(On how he feels his game is now compared to his first years in the league.)
"Man, I feel like my game is like it was last year. My most sacks, my most get offs, you know what I'm saying, explosive. I still feel powerful, I don't want to talk about the age, but, yeah, I still feel like I can do what I do."
(On what changed to improve his game last season)
"To be honest with you, I feel like it all just came together. Just between my run technique, the things that I learned over my course of time with 'A.P.' (New York Giants Defensive Line Coach Andre Patterson), as far as the pass rush, just looking at it differently. Even the things that Dexter Lawrence used to tell me about weight distribution of the shoulders. It just felt like in that last season, it all was just slowing down for me."
WIDE RECEIVER TED HURST III
(On his performance during Sunday's training camp)
"[I'm] just trying to be myself and exploit and show that that's my game, going up, attacking the ball. Lately, I feel like I haven't been doing that much, but it kind of starts in the morning. Getting up and coming in at 6:30 a.m., getting the walk-through in before we even get outside so I can just play [as] fast as I want to, not thinking out there on the field."
(On what the biggest thing he's learned so far during his first NFL training camp)
"This game is highly detailed. These are the best athletes in the world and everything's detailed. The difference between, I'll say college and this, is [that] it's highly detailed. You have specific spots. These guys are sharp, they're detailed, they perform every day, come out with high energy. Just trying to execute at a high level is probably the biggest thing for sure, every rep."
(On if he's starting to find where he fits in the offense)
"Yeah, I'll definitely say I'm just trying to be a pro and learn my routes and my ways to get ready for each and every day. Like I said, these guys come and attack practice and they're intentional every day. So, yeah, for sure."
(On what it's like to line up next to WR Emeka Egbuka and WR Chris Godwin Jr.)
"I'll just say, these guys, they come out every day. These guys [are] so smart when [they're] in the classroom, and it translate to how they perform on the field."
(On what it's like going up against CB Ayden Garnes)
"This guy, he went undrafted, but I mean, he has a high potential. Every time I walk around, I see him looking at film or I just see him studying this game and taking it to the field. The things he sees, it always translates on the field. He's definitely a great competitor."
