TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 6-15-23

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On the final day of mini-camp)

"It was short and sweet. We cleaned up some things in the red zone that we needed to work on. I thought we got better."

(On his overall takeaway from mini-camp)

"It's more of a mental thing. It's just an extension of OTAs, really, with more meetings. So, nothing has changed from that standpoint but the learning process – we try to finalize a few things that we needed to clean up and I thought we got that done."

(On how the offensive install is going)

"We've got a good amount of the concepts installed. As far as the mixing and matching and things we have to do, we'll get that done in training camp. It's kind of hard without pads to really get the running game installed, but we got the concepts done so we were happy about that."

(On if he's excited to see any player in particular during training camp)

"I think it's all of them. It's a physical game up front, whether it's offense or defense. You want to see how they play in pads, like you said. We don't award [anybody] in shorts and t-shirts. All of them have to show out once we get in pads."

(On how to limit turnovers from QB Baker Mayfield)

"I have to see all of them first to see what kind they were, but you try to get the ball out of his hands and make sure he's making the right read. If the guy is covered, try and throw it out of bounds. If you're a quarterback, you're going to take some chances and you're going to have some turnovers – just try to limit them as much as we can."

(On what he learned about his team through mini-camp)

"They work hard. They work hard and they're coming together. Everything else will take care of itself once the pads come on."

(On if he has a message for the team as they depart before training camp)

"It's similar: come back in shape, injured guys – get healthier, and be ready to go."

(On if he's told rookies how hot training camp is going to be)

"Any time you come to the state of Florida, you should expect it to be hot. They understand that."

(On what he hopes rookies contribute during training camp and during the season)

"Just what they showed on college tape. There's a reason we took them, so we're going to get in pads and hopefully they do the same thing."

(On if he's noticed the speed that he wanted to add to the team)

"You can see it upfront on defense. Obviously, they're more athletic so you can see a lot of the speed show up, yes."

(On what his hope is for the team once they report for training camp)

"Today, that they come back healthy. Tomorrow, I'm going to be on vacation and I'm not going to have an outlook. When I get back, [it would be] just staying healthy over the summer, not getting in any trouble, come back and not forget the things they learned."

CORNERBACK JAMEL DEAN

(On what he has seen from quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask this offseason)

"It has been a great quarterback competition watching those two compete against each other. The starting job is still up for grabs so seeing the grind that both of them are doing – it's impressive to watch."

(On if he sees improvements in CB Zyon McCollum)

"You can see that he has a season under his belt because he is more confident out there, he knows what he is doing and he's trying out different techniques so he can see what works for him and what doesn't. That's the next step in your career is showing you're growing."

(On trying to create more takeaways this season)

"We just have to create them. We've got to disguise more [and] we've got to bait the quarterback into throwing into spots we want him to throw it to instead of just lining up and doing our jobs because those are the rules. We've got to create opportunities for ourselves."

(On the Creamsicle uniforms the team is set to re-introduce this season)

"I'm so excited to wear those. I've been waiting for years like, 'Man, I hope I'm on the team when they bring those jerseys out. It's exciting because once I get it, I'm keeping it forever. No jersey swap – I'm letting everybody know right now I'm not jersey swapping."

DEFENSIVE LINEMAN CALIJAH KANCEY

(On what he has learned throughout his first NFL offseason)

"I think I learned a lot of football schematically. Just understanding the new defense for me coming from a 4-3 in college to a 3-4 here. There are just a lot of movements and stuff like that. It's just understanding football as a pro."

(On Head Coach Todd Bowles' defense)

"I love it. It's awesome. A lot of movements, which I'm good at. Speed in the interior is what we want. I think it's a great thing. I love it."

(On when he learned about LB Lavonte David growing up)

"Growing up in Miami, he was like the bigger name and the hero coming from Liberty City. He was the guy that led the way, so we always went to his camps and stuff like that growing up. When I got into high school, he was talked about more and more and I just started to understand and learn more about him because he is a legend down there in Miami."

(On being teammates with David now)

"It's just awesome when you go from looking up to somebody and now being their teammate and their peer. I think it's awesome how you see [that] when I was younger, I looked up to him and now I'm in the same locker room as him. It's awesome."

(On playing next to NT Vita Vea)

"Vita is doing a great job of teaching me the game. He is helping me out a lot and he is going to draw a lot of attention, which will help me and the defense out, as well."
