TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 8-6-22

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On what stood out to him during practice)

"[A] lot better effort on both sides than yesterday. Yesterday was a little one-sided – today was more give and take."

(On WR Mike Evans' injury)

"He's sore. He's day-to-day. He'll be fine. It's just a matter of when we put him out there."

(On if he has an update on the status of C Ryan Jensen)

"Not yet, no."

(On if the wait on Jensen's prognosis is a matter of getting second opinions or swelling)

"I'm not sure. It's a matter of him getting back to us, really. I'm sure he's got to get other opinions but we're waiting on that so we can make a final decision."

(On if he is expecting more big plays from LB Lavonte David, who had an interception in practice)

"It's not so much splash plays – it's making the right plays. It's not just him, it's the entire defense. We're trying to get turnovers overall. We were decent last year, but we can be a lot better. The ones we dropped and the misfits we had when we dropped – we're trying to clean that up some. It's not just him – the defense overall, they're going out every day trying to make turnovers happen."

(On how the joint practices will be structured)

"It will be more like regular camp practice, it will just be against another team, so to speak, on two fields. We'll have our team run periods and our blitz periods and our seven-on-seven and things like that, so it will be run like normal practices, just [with] another team."

(On if some starters won't play in the first preseason game because they will get enough work during the joint practices)

"We'll see how the week goes. We'll see how the week goes and we'll make that determination later on, on Friday. Whoever gets a lot of reps, and we'll plug and play and see guys we need to see. Other guys, we may need to see. It'll be after the practices, probably some time that Friday night."

(On what he saw out of WR Chris Godwin in practice)

"Same as yesterday – he's moving around [well]. He's running around, he's catching passes, he feels good. So, we're just taking it day by day."

(On if the return of Godwin has raised the excitement level among his teammates)

"They're happy to see him out there but you're not going to see too much pep in the step on Week 2 of training camp in pads. You're going to see grinding hard work and a guy getting better. But it's always great to see him out there and the guys are happy he's out there."

(On the status of WR Breshad Perriman)

"He's injured. We're just taking it day by day. He may be out there in the next few days. He's getting healthier."

(On how he gets the team to work together as one unit)

"Well, it's a process. That's what camp is for, that's what training camp is for – the camaraderie, obviously, the culture and the chemistry. You build that day by day. It's not going to come in a week, it's not going to come in three days. You build that up all the way up until the season. It's constant – it's constant competition, it's constant learning, it's constant corrections, it's constant making plays. It'll come over the course of time."

(On the depth behind starting inside linebackers Lavonte David and Devin White)

"K.J. [Britt] can play both [positions] obviously. We really like him – he's coming on a lot. He makes a lot of plays, he's very intelligent and he works hard. Grant [Stuard] is very sharp. He's an effort guy, he's very smart, he learned the defense better this year where he may be able to help us. And we're looking at the two young guys, J.J. [Russell] and [Olakunle] Fatukasi, as well. Both of those guys will be interesting to see in the preseason because they show some flash."

(On CB Sean Murphy-Bunting's confidence and performance during camp)

"He's always had confidence, it's just a matter of him being healthy. I think he's come in with his head down, he's working, you can tell he's in great shape. He's been doing a great job this camp so far. Again, the biggest thing for him is he's healthy and you don't have to worry about him moving around and everything. He's got his speed back, he's got his flexibility back and he's doing a good job."

(On the development of OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka from last year to this year)

"Just his familiarity with the system. Last year we moved him around a lot, and we had other pieces, but this year he's concentrating at outside [linebacker] and he's understanding the little things. I think Coach [Bob] Sanders has done a great job with him thus far, teaching him the nuances of the outside [linebacker] spot and he's getting better and better."

(On who may emerge as leaders on special teams this year)

"There's a lot of vocal guys, but because we're not full speed right now, you really can't see it. They'll sort themselves out in preseason."

(On QB Tom Brady and WR Russell gage forming a connection)

"Well, they've got to keep building the chemistry. We've got a couple new pieces on offense, so they're all going to have to build chemistry together. But Russ is a vet. He knows how to get open, and Tom understands that. They seem like they have a natural vibe. I'm sure there's more to go and there's a lot more to learn before they get to know each other fully, but they're off to a good start."

(On if WR Mike Evans' injury could keep him out for a few days)

"He's day to day and we'll see from there."

(On if Evans would miss the preseason games)

"He's day to day."

GUARD SHAQ MASON

(On the adjustment from New England to Tampa)

"I would say the weather [laughs], other than that I mean football is football. You have to love it to play it. Just adjusting to the terminology and things like that – just meshing with the guys."

(On the competition level so far into training camp)

"It's high. The competition level is definitely high. Guys are getting after it. We all are trying to fly around and get better each and every day. That's part of it."

(On his familiarity with QB Tom Brady going back to New England)

"I love it. My first five years in the league were with Tom so definitely glad and lucky to be back with him."

(On OL Robert Hainsey's progression)

"He's definitely stepping in and doing a good job. He works his tail off day in and day out. He's doing a good job of getting us all on the same page and conducting us five."

(On if he sees something different that OL Robert Hainsey brings to the offensive line)

"He's an extra smart guy. He knows the things in and out, he knows how to get everyone on the same page, knows how to adjust quickly and that's all you can ask for, for an offensive lineman."

(On seeing QB Tom Brady back on the field)

"We all are professionals. Whoever is in there we have confidence in them. Definitely glad to see him back out there."

(On if there was any adjustment from HC Bill Belichick to HC Todd Bowles)

"It's not an extreme difference. Both coaches demand the best out of their players. Some go about it different ways than others, but ultimately it's a team game and everybody wants to win."

(On building chemistry with new teammates)

"That's the main thing, building chemistry, getting on the same page and adjusting to the mental aspect of the different play calls and terminology."

(On going up against the pass rush every day in practice)

"Iron sharpens iron man, we all are getting after it. Me and Akiem (Hicks) have a friendly competition going on every day because we played with each other in New England, and we played each other a lot when he was with the Bears. We always go at it a lot."

(On rookie RB Rachaad White running behind a veteran offensive line)

"I would say the main thing is him just meshing and getting the mental aspect of it down. He definitely shows that he can play. The biggest thing for any young guy -- whether it's running back, or anywhere on the offense or defense -- is the mental aspect of the NFL."

(On if he sees any difference in QB style from QB Tom Brady from New England until now)

"He's the same Tom, he's the same Tom [laughs]. Leader of men."
