BUCCANEERS REACH AGREEMENT WITH BAKER MAYFIELD

Two-Time Pro Bowl Quarterback Becomes Highest-Paid Player in Buccaneers History

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that the team has agreed to terms with quarterback Baker Mayfield on a multi-year contract extension, making him the highest-paid player in franchise history. Mayfield's four-year deal, which includes a three-year extension, ties the two-time Pro Bowler to Tampa Bay through the 2029 season.

Since joining the Buccaneers prior to the 2023 season, Mayfield ranks third in the NFL in passing yards (12,237) and second in passing touchdowns (95). Over his 51 regular season starts for Tampa Bay in the past three seasons, Mayfield has completed 1,114-of-1,679 passes (66.3%) and posted a 97.4 passer rating.

"Baker's arrival marked an important new chapter for our organization, and over the past three years he has established himself as the unquestioned leader of our franchise" said Buccaneers Owner/Co-Chairman Joel Glazer. "This contract – the largest in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – reflects our belief in Baker, and his leadership both on and off the field. His competitive spirit, resilience and commitment to winning embody everything we want in our players. Baker and his wife, Emily, have made a meaningful impact in the Tampa Bay community and we are thrilled their family will continue to call Tampa Bay home for years to come."

Over three seasons with Tampa Bay, Mayfield has led the Buccaneers to two NFC South division titles and a postseason victory while earning a pair of Pro Bowl selections. He has set Buccaneers single-season records for completion percentage (71.4%) and passer rating (106.8), and currently ranks second in franchise history in passer rating (97.4) and completion percentage (66.3%), third in passing touchdowns (95), sixth in completions (1,114) and seventh in passing yards (12,237). He is the only quarterback in club history to be selected to multiple Pro Bowls.

"From the moment Baker arrived, he brought a belief and competitive edge that has had a tremendous impact on our football team," said Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht. "He has earned the respect of everyone in our building with the way he prepares, competes and holds himself accountable. His toughness and ability to deliver in big moments are a big part of what makes him special, but what really stands out is the leadership he brings every day. Baker is the heartbeat of this team, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have a quarterback and leader like him."

Mayfield, who was just voted a Buccaneers team captain for the fourth consecutive year, has established single-season career highs in completions, passing yards, passing touchdowns, completion percentage, passer rating and rushing yards since arriving in Tampa Bay. Last year, he rushed for a career-high 382 yards and averaged an NFL-best 6.9 yards per carry among quarterbacks. In 2024, Mayfield produced the best campaign of his career, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns to become the fourth player in NFL history to record at least 4,000 passing yards and 40 passing touchdowns while completing 70% or more of his passes in a single season.

"Baker is the ultimate competitor, and the guys in our locker room feed off the energy, confidence and toughness he brings daily," said Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles. "He prepares the right way, holds himself accountable and is an unquestioned leader for our team. His belief in himself and this team never wavers, and he sets the tone for us every day. That is what you want from the person leading your football team, and we are excited to continue building with him as our quarterback."

Across eight NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Rams and Buccaneers, Mayfield has started 120-of-123 career regular season games, completing 2,500-of-3,938 passes (63.5%) for 28,525 yards and 197 touchdowns. He has also started five postseason contests, completing 64.5% of his passes for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns compared to three interceptions. His 105.9 career postseason passer rating is the highest in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 150 playoff passing attempts.

In addition to his performance on the field, Mayfield was Tampa Bay's nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2025. Through the Baker & Emily Mayfield Foundation, the Mayfields have generated over $600,000 for the Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County via their annual "Be the Ball" fundraising event. The couple has also raised $92,500 for Tampa Bay charities through a bracket-style fundraising competition, donated $50,000 to Team Rubicon to assist communities affected by hurricanes, donated nearly $20,000 in football equipment to a Florida high school that was on the verge of losing its football program, and launched a scholarship program benefiting walk-on college student-athletes who receive minimal or no athletic aid.

Originally selected by the Browns with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield earned PFWA Rookie of the Year honors after setting a then-NFL rookie record with 27 touchdown passes. Mayfield played collegiately at Texas Tech University (2013) and the University of Oklahoma (2015-17), where he won the Heisman Trophy after passing for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns in 2017. He was the first-ever Heisman Trophy winner to begin his college career as a walk-on.
