HC Bruce Arians Media Availability - Wednesday, August 7, 2019

Head Coach Bruce Arians

(On players who will not travel to Friday's game in Pittsburgh and Vita Vea's health status)

"Not traveling: [Jamel] Dean, [Vita] Vea, [Jack] Cichy, [Lavonte] David, [D'Cota] Dixon, [Anthony] Nelson, [Scotty] Miller, [K.J.] Brent, [Scott] Orndoff, [Mike] Liedtke, [Nick] Fitzgerald and [Justin] Evans. Obviously, Fitzgerald and Evans aren't back yet. We did the MRI right away on Vita yesterday. [There is] a little fluid in there, a little swelling, so we'll do another one on Friday. There's nothing really to report on what it is yet, or [the] timetable [is] as far as [his] return. We'll know more after Friday. But the original prognosis was good. Other than that, good fast practice - [we are] ready to go hit somebody else."

(On what he looks for during the first preseason game]

"Young players – they're going to play the majority of the game, 80 percent of it. One or two of them are either going to get exposed or have good exposure, and that's really what this is all about. That's what we talked to them about it. What they're putting on tape is not just for us – 31 other teams are going to look at it. So you want to put the best thing you have on tape to be evaluated."

(On if he will try to limit the exposure of his quarterback)

"Oh, we do that every year. We're not interested in getting a hundred snaps. Every year it's, 'Where are they at?' We'll gradually increase each week a little bit. Whether we play a half of the third game – any of the fourth game, all depends on the players. I'll judge that as we go along. There's nothing set in stone."

(On if he would be tempted to pull the starting offense quickly if it scores on the opening drive)

"If they play that long – I might call timeout and take them out."

(On dealing with injuries on defense)

"Well, Lavonte [David] will be fine. Vita [Vea], we'll wait and see. If there's time missed game-wise we'll adjust and move on. But Lavonte will be fine."

(On what he's still disappointed with in training camp)

"I'm not disappointed with anything. We've got great effort, speed of practice every day. I'm anxious to go seem them play somebody else."

(On if WR Bobo Wilson could help himself in preseason games)

"Yeah, as a kick returner. [He needs] consistency in catching the ball in games because he's been inconsistent in practice. But as a kick returner and a special teams player he's in a battle with some other guys."

(On if Alex Cappa is winning the right guard job)

"Right now he's the starter."

(On who gets the snaps in DL Vita Vea's place while he's out)

"Beau [Allen], Nacho (Rakeem Nunez-Roches) – we've got two or three guys we'll just keep rotating in there."

(On what one thing he wants to get out of Friday's game)

"A win – that's the only reason we play the game. Young players, veteran players – you play to win the game. And, organization. Not 10 guys out there on a punt, stuff like that. Just look like we know what we're doing, and I want to see these guys play hard."

(On if he is going to alternate field goal kickers in the game)

"Yes."

(On if play-action is a big part of his offense)

"It's huge, a huge part of our offense, and you can't have the play-action pass if you can't run the ball. They go hand-in-hand. It's the easy way to protect, it's the easy way to get the ball way down the field is to have good, hard play-action. Having been a wishbone quarterback, I'm kind of used to that. We only sent one guy out, but he was always open."

(On if it's easier to open the preseason on the road or at home)

"I don't think it really matters. The crowd noise. I don't anticipate it being that loud that we'd have to use a silent count, but we'll be ready for it."

(On how important it is for young players to play multiple positions)

"Yeah, when it's cut time, [it's] the more you can do. That's the old saying: 'The more you can do.' Position flexibility, special teams value – the more value you have the better chance you'll make the team, especially if you're in the bottom 10."

(On practicing inside)

"This one was always scheduled to be inside, a short and fast practice. We didn't turn the heat up for a reason; we want guys fresh for the game. So, that was always planned out. I mean, thank God we've got the building. We got all the conditioning we needed in here, with the humidity and everything [and] the way they control the temperature. Yeah, I mean if we were away at a school that didn't have an indoor facility, and we had this, your training camp's shot, you know what I mean?"

(On one player on each side of the ball who has jumped out at camp)

"There's probably more than one. I'm now anxious to see them in game situations. Our starters obviously will not play much but they don't have to prove anything to me right now. I'm pretty much set in stone on those guys. It's those young players covering kicks, playing smart, fast football."

(On if both RB Peyton Barber and RB Ronald Jones will get to play with the first-team offensive line)

"Hopefully, hopefully. I'd like to get some little bit of rhythm going but we're not going to play that long [with the first team]. Peyton will not go in with the twos. If we have a drive and they're done, we'll probably get RoJo (Ronald Jones) with the twos."

(On how important it is for Jones' confidence to have a productive preseason)

"That's why I'd like to have him out there with the ones, to have his best opportunities, but his confidence should be sky-high right now, as good of a camp as he's had."
