Last summer, Jameis Winston made a promise to a young fan. On Saturday, he was able to make good on it.
As he prepared for his rookie season exactly a year ago, Winston heard a story of a young fan named Peyton Ponder. Ponder, a long-time fan of Winston's, had been thrown from an ATV on July 4th, suffering severe injuries in the process. Winston delivered a message to Ponder through YouTube and invited him to training camp, if he was up to it.
After multiple procedures and significant time in the hospital, Ponder was able to attend one of the Bucs' training camp practices and meet Winston.
"You just focus on getting better," Winston told him. "I'll take care of all the football stuff. Once you're healthy enough, I'll have you back out here to throw you a pass."
On Saturday, Ponder, now in better health, returned to One Buccaneer Place to catch the pass Winston had promised him a year ago.
