The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced today that they have hired Brett Maxie as defensive backs coach.
Maxie comes to Tampa Bay after having spending the past two seasons at Vanderbilt, working as the secondary coach (2014) and cornerbacks coach (2015). Prior to his time at Vanderbilt, Maxie spent two seasons with the Tennessee Titans (2012-13), serving as the defensive backs coach. Under Maxie's guidance, cornerback Alterraun Verner earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2013, after registering a career-high five interceptions and 22 passes defensed, which tied for the league lead. Before joining the Titans staff, Maxie spent three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (2008-11), as the team's defensive backs coach, helping Mike Jenkins and Terence Newman earn Pro Bowl selections in 2009.
Prior to his coaching career, Maxie spent 13 seasons in the NFL as a player, starting 104 of 153 games played, compiling 588 tackles, 81 passes defensed, 23 interceptions (300 return yards, three touchdowns) and 4.0 sacks. He entered the league as a college free agent with the New Orleans Saints, where he played from 1985-93, before stints with the Atlanta Falcons (1994), Carolina Panthers (1995-96) and San Francisco 49ers (1997).
Following the '99 season Maxie began his coaching career with the Panthers, working as quality control/defensive backs coach (1998).
