Tampa Bay Buccaneers General Manager Mark Dominik today confirmed that a third player has been diagnosed with a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Dominik reported that, as part of the team's proactive plan of action, the Buccaneers organization has been working with the world-renowned Duke Infection Control Outreach Network (http://dicon.medicine.duke.edu/) since September to educate the organization and implement effective infection control policies.
DICON Co-Director Dr. Deverick J. Anderson, recognized as one of the country's leading authorities on infectious disease control, addressed the Buccaneers players and staff on Friday. Dr. Anderson also confirmed the team's ongoing efforts to implement proactive medical protocols in an effort to reduce the risk of future MRSA infections.
"Having worked closely with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I believe they are following the best practices and recommendations to reduce the transmission of MRSA," Anderson said.
Dominik said, "In addition to our work with the NFL, the NFLPA and various infectious disease specialists, we began working with DICON three weeks ago to implement best practices and procedures. DICON is an industry leader in the world of infectious disease research and we look forward to continuing our work with them to provide the best education and working environment for our players and staff."
