Performance Preview: Big Game Coming for Tykee Smith or Tez Johnson?

Brianna Dix and Scott Smith continue their season-long competition – currently being controlled by Briana – of predicting which players will have star turns in the Bucs' next outings

It's time for another round of "Performance Preview," in which Staff Writer/Reporter Brianna Dix and I make our picks to click for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' next game. This is more than just a brief bit of game analysis, it's a competition. That's right: We're keeping score

The rules are simple: Bri and I each pick one Buccaneers player on Friday and explain why we think they are poised for a big game. We can't duplicate picks so order may matter; I picked first last week so that honor rotates to her this week. Since neither of us would be impartial enough to do the judging after the game, we've asked Team Reporter Casey Phillips to step in as the guest judge each week.

There was no winner in Week Four, as neither of our picks produced any noteworthy statistics. That meant I went into Week Five with a chance to tie the season series up, and my choice was Chris Godwin, who I thought might have one of his signature big games after he had knocked the rust off in his return against the Eagles. Alas, Godwin sustained a leg injury during the game and there were a number of other offensive players with more noteworthy outputs, including Bri's pick of running back Rachaad White. She reasoned that White, who had one of the best games of his career against Seattle in 2022, was in position for another strong outing against the Seahawks due to Bucky Irving's absence.

This is how Judge Casey ruled this week:

"Going into this week, Scott had the chance to tie it up with Bri since they sat at 2-1-1. Alas, he let the opportunity slip through his fingers with what seemed like a great pick in Chris Godwin, only to be outdone by a two touchdown performance by Rachaad White. With Bucky being out and knowing how Rachaad likes to do big things against Seattle, Bri knew the safe pick here and takes a 3-1-1 lead."

And, thus, our updated Performance Preview Scoreboard:

Brianna Dix: 3

Scott Smith: 1

Push: 1

Well, this isn't going great. Let's make our picks for Week Six as I try to avoid falling into a deep hole in this competition.

Scott Smith: Tykee Smith

It would probably be smart to go with an offensive player this week, given that Smith and his defensive cohorts will be facing the NFL's top-ranked passing attack. But whoever said I was smart? The scoreboard would indicate otherwise.

Anyway, I just love the brand of football that Smith is playing and think he could be due for a game-changing performance. He's going to put up some kind of eye-catching numbers – he leads the team in both tackles (39) and passes defensed (six), which is an unusual combination and an indicator of a defender who is making plays all over the field.

The biggest challenge for the Buccaneers this week is Christian McCaffrey, who leads the NFL with 669 yards from scrimmage and can gash a defense on the ground or through the air. I doubt the Bucs' defense will completely shut McCaffrey down, but if they can limit his damage, particularly in the passing game, they'll have a shot to keep the 49ers' offense in check. I'm predicting Smith has a handful of plays that advance that mission, maybe a couple third down stops or quick-reaction tackles to short passes to McCaffrey. If he can toss in a takeaway at some point, Smith should be able to bring me (and the Buccaneers, hopefully) home the 'W.'

Brianna Dix: Tez Johnson

As defenses continue to allocate resources to Emeka Egbuka, opportunities will arise for players like Tez Johnson. Against the Seahawks, Johnson earned the trust of Baker Mayfield and finished with four receptions for 59 yards. Johnson finds ways to uncover with shifty footwork and he is slippery after the catch. He is adept off sweeps, screens and working the middle of the field against zone coverage when given a free release.

Johnson, the Bucs' seventh-round pick in 2025, made a mark throughout rookie minicamp and training camp with his YAC-ability and quickness in-and-out of breaks. He primarily worked out of the slot at Oregon and pairs explosive speed with redirection skills to leave pursuit grasping at threads. With rare stop-and-start moves, along with confidence gained from the Seattle matchup, I believe this could be his breakout game.
